Finally saw it
|
Thought it was prettyyyyy darn good. All of it was incredibly impressive. Two months ago I thought it was supposed to be a legit one-shot movie so I was bummed to learn that it was just gonna be edited that way but I still thought it worked great. I'm a sucker for long takes. It didn't feel gimmicky or distracting to me at all. It definitely DID feel very much like a video game at times, like the way a video game cutscene will seamlessly transition into gameplay as you take control of the character
Shocked that the main kid died so soon, or at least who I thought was supposed to be the main kid. I ended up liking Schofield a lot though, I thought the actor did great. I get the lack of characterization complaint but it didn't bother me here like it did in Dunkirk. I thought this was far better than Dunkirk. Also I loved the Schofield family reveal at the end, that added so much weight
Boc posted somewhere that he wished they didn't spoil the money shot of him running across the battlefield - I agree. P lame that their ads focused so heavily on that. Still a great scene tho
Crossing no man's land, Schofield's near death, the plane crash scene, Schofield running through the town on fire - all great. They really fired on all cylinders here, the production was pretty fantastic. I think it's gonna do great at the Oscars |

Wish I hadn't heard about the "one shot" thing, since I was on the lookout for where they cut the entire movie...
Still a very good movie |

1917 as well
a wee bit disappointed tbh! I definitely enjoyed it but I think I was a bit too hyped for it. It was about what I expected when I first saw the trailer/heard that Deakins was shooting this as a faux "oner" - a great theater experience held together by a couple decent characters that you only somewhat care about/connect with
But boy did it look great. Especially when it transitions into night in that town, OOF. Wish they didn't spoil the money shot (Schofield weaving between artillery strikes) in the trailer but o well
No idea why they settled on 1917 for the name tbh! Out of all the war movies to just name after the year, this one seems the least likely cuz it had such a relatively small focus. ODD! |

I fully expect this to win Best Picture, and though there's PERSONALLY 5+ movies I'd put ahead of this from last year, it wouldn't be a bad choice. Obviously deserves cinematography at the very least
Definitely agree with the Dunkirk comparisons and that this was a superior version of that

I enjoyed it, very visually pleasing. I agree with Boc it was a little underwhelming. But it was definitely thrilling and a lot of tense moments
|
Tommen and Robb being brothers felt weird. |

Saw this yesterday...I thought it was very poor.
It was like Dunkirk in that they didn't develop the characters at all, and relied purely on the visuals to sell the film, which admittedly, were very good. The directing deserves praise, the one shot thing was cool. But the stunning cinematography and directing trickery comes across as gimmicky when it's not backed up by a great script.
At times I thought I was watching the WW1 equivalent of The Revenant. Some moments were just absurd.
There was no depth to it at all.
Also the tokenism was cringy and historically inaccurate. Sikhs and black people would not have been serving in English regiments at the time, it's absurd. I know it's just a movie but it really breaks the immersion and I find it insulting to everyone involved.
They want to be more diverse, why don't they take an actual risk and tell the story of the Sikh regiments who served in WW1, because they did. That would be way better than these fake token gestures

It started getting silly for me the moment the German plane crashed directly on top of them.
What are the chances! And then after pulling the pilot out of the burning wreckage and saving his life, he stabs one of them to death?!
Is the moustache twirling, baby killing German soldier back in fashion?

I take back the tokenism critique after further reading. It seems British army regulations did allow for such a thing to happen, and there appear to be real examples of the intermingling of different races in regiments.
I'll choose to believe Sam Mendes portrayal of that was done with the best of intentions, rather than it been mere pandering.

Also I bet this film was a much different experience in the cinema.
I'm gonna stop posting about this now, but I was disappointed in this after all the good stuff I heard about it.

it definitely benefited from the theater but I agree with most of your points. It really did feel like one long video game cutscene for the most part. Great spectacle but "just" an above average/pretty good movie. Glad it didn't win Best Picture

I haven't seen this yet but I watched a video on them using digital body doubles to transition between takes and it was so seamless I was blown away.
