Just like Hereditary I've decided to avoid all trailers and clips from this for the hell of it. I liked doing that with Hereditary. If this guy always makes horror I might make it a habit
Haven't seen anything other than some great looking screenshots
Hereditary is still a movie I go back and forth on. I thought it took on a few too many concepts and lost sight on what it really had in its hands. Regardless, I feel like Midsommar is going to be legit. I'm really looking forward to seeing this as soon as it comes out.
Decided to go alone tonight on a whim. Why is it even out tonight? WHO KNOWS! I've only gone to the movies alone twice before and each time they made that movie a lil special, this was no exception
This was a trip. It wasn't scary, but it wasn't quite the modern typical under the skin unnerving either? It was SOMETHING ELSE. It really felt like a different type of horror that's hard to pin down. It was definitely horrifying and overwhelming and uncomfortable, that's for sure. Ari Aster's an enigma so far but I really like him, I hope he keeps doing horror
I still hadn't seen any trailers or footage at all before watching this. I'm so glad. I watched the trailers when I got out and they do a great job of showing things out of context but boy was some of it still really spoilery. Either way, it was so fun going in like Hereditary and only having an idea of what the horror element was gonna be. I def had a better idea for this than I did with Hereditary because it kinda goes where you think it'll go genre wise but that's okay
Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor were both great. She was reallyyyy good. That ending with her was...woof. Interesting. Christian was a dick and a terrible boyfriend but man did I feel sorry for him by the end. Definitely an annoying dude but whew, that was quite the breakup. I was really hoping she wouldn't choose him at the end. Speaking of which, the director tweeted this which cracks me up now:
“I wrote #Midsommar while I was going through a breakup, 4 years ago. Now it’s a movie. This is, down to the last detail, exactly what happened.”
Way funnier than I expected too. Will Poulter's character was played perfectly between annoying and hilarious, his lines all really landed. The relationships falling apart between everyone was all really well done. They all had some flaws for sure but I didn't wanna see any of them go. At the same time...I wish we did see them go a lil bit more. One shockingly brutal death in the middle there would've been nice, like Josh's should've been more for sure. The skin mask during that scene was a horrifying image though
Also, the first ten minutes before the title cards came up were so perfect. That reveal with the parents. God damn
8/10 for me. Better than Hereditary maybe? They're SO close. Hereditary was stuck in my head for many days after watching it and only got better in my mind. This'll be hard to shake too. It's a toss up for what worked for me more but I think I'm leaning this
