It's no more a sandwich than pizza.

I mostly agree. It's not cut and dried for me, though.

I mean, you still have bread and filling, even gravy as a condiment. You could slap it together and pick it up, but it would be really messy.

Italian beef is pretty close without the potatos and you can serve them open or closed .

I've also had hot dogs so loaded that you have to eat them open faced.

What about open faced burgers?

That's more likely because hot dog buns are an abomination of a breadstuff.

Hot beef sandwiches do have 2 slices of bread. So do Italian beef sandwiches.
I know they don't serve them at McDonalds so you're at a disadvantage.

The ones I'm thinking of come on a deli roll. Open faced with chili, cheese, lettuce, tomato, relish, and a jumbo frank
