Saw this tonight. A LOT TO CHEW ON, I def liked it overall though. Maybe not quite as much as Ex Machina though

I loved the way the movie was structured with the gradual progress towards the lighthouse, all the while things get increasingly strange and people start slowly losing it. I just kinda wish after all that there was...a little bit more of a conclusion? Not necessarily a concrete explanation, but...at the end I'm still not sure what that really was supposed to be building to. And I'm also not sure why blowing up a clone with phosphorous would bring down the entire Shimmer
Standout scenes:
- The videotape of Kane cutting the guy open, jesus christ that was cringe-inducing. The movie shifted to another gear after that
- The hostage sequence, especially the part with the bear with Sheppard's voice
- Lena's clone scene. That was...something. This movie definitely wasn't afraid of taking risks, I read there was a feud between two producers where one wanted to change up the ending to make it more 'accessible'. And between this and Ventress' death I can see why, glad they didn't get their way though
I liked it quiiiiiiite a bit. Garland is 2/2 for sure. I just found out he wrote 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes me like him even more. Excited to see what he does next
I thought the idea itself was really original. The shimmer sorta...taking every organisms cells, mixing them together, and spitting out something new. It has a ton more potential and I feel like this movie only scratched the surface, but what we did get on that side of things was really good. Some great visuals that'll stick with me from this - the guy's organs swirling around, the same guy stuck against the edge of the empty pool, the clone at the end, the creatures, the bear with her voice, the phosphorous grenade, the plant people, etc. A lot of good shit and it all worked
Reading about the dueling producers Cart. Thank goodness for that one who had faith. FUCK THAT OTHER GUY!
Also regarding the shimmer ending, I think it had a lot more to do with the lighthouse burning down and the cave underneath it since that was the origin of everything. I don't think it was about the clone burning, the clone is just the one who lit the whole place up. I think??? Not sure
The hostage/bear scene was the best. Anya's death was bruuuutal. That JAW RIP. I wanna see that again, it was gnarly
