Survivor: Borneo

Posted Image

Survivor: Borneo is the first season of the American CBS competitive reality television series Survivor. It was originally broadcast under the name Survivor but its official title was changed to Survivor: Pulau Tiga to distinguish it from subsequent installments of the series, and then changed again to Survivor: Borneo to avoid confusion with Survivor: Palau. The show filmed from March 13, 2000 through April 20, 2000 and premiered on May 31, 2000. Hosted by Jeff Probst, it consisted of 39 days of gameplay with 16 competitors. It was set in the South China Sea on the remote Malaysian island of Tiga in the state of Sabah, about 6 miles (9.7 km) off the north coast of Borneo, Malaysia.[1]

The sixteen contestants were initially separated into two tribes, named Tagi and Pagong, which represented the names of their beaches.[1] When ten players remained, the contestants merged into one tribe, named Rattana. While Tagi and Pagong's names and makeups were picked by the producers, Rattana was named by contestants Sean Kenniff and Jenna Lewis, because of the large amount of Rattan wood on the island. After 39 days of competition, corporate trainer Richard Hatch was named the Sole Survivor, defeating whitewater rafting guide Kelly Wiglesworth in a 4–3 jury vote.

Survivor: Philippines

Survivor: Philippines is the twenty-fifth season of the American CBS competitive reality television series Survivor. The season was filmed March 18–April 25, 2012 and premiered on September 19, 2012 with a special 90-minute episode.[1][2] It is the first season since Survivor: All-Stars to begin with three tribes and the seventh season overall to feature returning castaways.[3]

Participants' applications were due on October 4, 2011, with approximately 800 chosen for interviews in various states. From there, 15 new contestants were selected. With filming beginning in March, it marked the earliest Survivor season filming to date since Survivor: Borneo.[4] The season featured the 15 new castaways competing with three returning castaways who were removed from their previous seasons due to illness or injury: Michael Skupin (passed out into a fire and suffered severe burns to his face and hands) of The Australian Outback, Jonathan Penner (removed due to a serious infection to his knee) originally from Cook Islands and later evacuated in Micronesia, and Russell Swan (removed after blacking out twice due to low blood pressure resulting from dehydration) of Samoa.[5]

Denise Stapley was named the winner in the final episode on December 16, 2012, defeating Lisa Whelchel and Michael Skupin in a 6–1–1 vote, marking the second time in Survivor history (after China exactly 10 seasons earlier) where all three finalists received at least one vote. Stapley is the oldest female winner in the show's history, and also holds the distinction of being the only person to have attended and survived every Tribal Council in a single season. Whelchel won $100,000 as the "Sprint Player of the Season", narrowly beating out Malcolm Freberg by 0.7% of a voting margin; the closest margin in the history of the award.

The contestants were divided into two tribes: Maraamu and Rotu (Marquesan for 'Wind' and 'Rain', respectively). They later merged into the Soliantu tribe (a word created by competitors Kathy-Vavrick O'Brien and "Boston Rob" Mariano which they intended to mean "Sacred Allegiance to the Sun"). The winner, Vecepia Towery, was named Sole Survivor after defeating runner-up Neleh Dennis by a jury vote of 4-3. This was the first season where the contestants were not given any initial supplies, such as food, water, or matches. Also, the rules of individual immunity were changed so that a contestant who won immunity in a challenge was able to give it to another contestant. A new tiebreaker format was developed in preference of the past-used tiebreaker involving previous votes cast. The controversial new Purple Rock tiebreaker was used, resulting in the ousting of Paschal English, then with no votes against him.

Each round I'll be posing a question for all polls. Round one question is a sort of grading rubric for the season:

Rate the season 1-10 on the winner
Rate the season 1-10 on entertainment
Rate the season 1-10 on the cast overall
Rate the season 1-10 on gameplay

I saw Borneo 1x, and it wasn't bad, it was interesting really for what it is and how the game is now, but I enjoy Philippines a lot more, it was very briefly my favorite season and probably 2nd to HvV for how many times I've seen it.

Philippins for me. I think its because Borneo is the original and they were trying things out as a test run made it not so great as far as editing goes

no contest for me. I lovvvve the 3 tribe format and the Philippines cast as a whole. Editing might contribute to that? I feel like I got to know all of the characters

Borneo put me to sleep, but I understand it's love because it started it all. But I would never want to watch it again whereas I'd rewatch Philippines

This was tough because I really like Phillipines.

But Borneo is Borneo. I don't get how people can't watch it again. Newer seasons are all strategy which is boring if you know what happens but Borneo (and some of the older seasons) are like a comedy, you got people like Greg, and Rudy, and Sue and Hatch. These are just classic characters.

PS. Remember when Greg was rumored to be on this season. Ugh.

I actually love the editting of Borneo (: MY FAVORITE SEASON!

I haven't seen Philippines and besides Guatemala it's the season I know the absolute least about. It does have a better logo though, I will give it that.

Still, Borneo is awesome. The editting is very different but it's got this great mix of campy summer series, documentary style, and a sense of foreboding. It also reminds me a lot of old 90s shows so it's hitting the nostalgia sweet spot for me. Not a lot of seasons do a good job of hitting that same TONE. The lack of strategy is frustrating but if you can ignore that it does a great job of making the whole season the story of the downfall of everyone else who isn't Richard while still making it interesting and well rounded.

I think it's great storytelling, though probably not a great Survivor season overall

Oh i hate Phillipines xD Terrible final 3, disappointing random winner, the cast was full of recruits. Not so great returnees. RC got on my last nerve. Such bad memories.

So Borneo for me obv.

I like Philippines. Definitely a strong winner, very smart person. I think if she played in a Winners season she'd do very well. Malcolm 1.0 is dope, some cool storylines in this season too. Also 3 tribes is cool

Borneo is Borneo though. I really like that style of Survivor of like telling the story and focusing more on the people. It has it's own charm.

Philippines edges it out for me just by it being more intense/stuff happening.
