HEEEEEEEEERE WE GO! Back at it

Each year I start in June and each year I've come closer and closer to failing to meet my Halloween deadline. I thought for suuuure I would not hit it last year but I did. But this year................I think for sure I will not hit it. I've been busy and haven't been able to watch a ton. We'll see! If I fail then I'll just make it a challenge til the end of the year, no biggie

Again, I'm flying solo this year. SugarBoogerz is busy and is gonna sit this one out so this thread will just be me talking to myself unless anyone feels like making an attempt as well. Don't be shy!

The silver lining to Jacob dropping is that it frees me up for choosing movies. Him and I have picked the same lists for the past three years which reallyyyy limits us since the two of us have a lot of horror movies covered. But now I can watch some classics that I was never able to slap on our lists since he had already seen them. My list this year is much better and more recognizable than the previous couple as a result. Should be good and till be nice to finally watch some of these classics*

It's gonna work exactly the same. I found this chart on reddit. It shows 39 different horror sub-genres and a couple examples from each one (the person said they did a lot of recent examples instead of the best possible pick at times)



Also don't start nitpicking the subgenres that I put some movies under pls, I went by what little I know about some of these movies and I don't wanna be spoiled on what exactly the horror element is unless the description says it. Also don't say so and so sucks because it'll make me not wanna watch it at all, pls and ty

Curious what you'll say about a lot of these. Manhunter most specifically since it's a "classic" (I mean... as much as it can be, in the shadow of Lambs), but also History of the Occult, Innocents and The Sadness, all of which I watched pretty recently.

There's also a considerable amount here I haven't seen, compared to your other lists.

I whipped this one up pretty quickly and was kinda fast and loose with it. There's a few that I think once I watch them I'll realize they don't fit the subgenre, but that happens every year. Some of these I had never heard of until today when I sat down to do this

Check out Mad God Zersch, I bet you'd be into it (I've literally only seen the poster and read the description)

My batch this year: My yearly Argento, new releases like Men, Nope, Bodies Bodies Bodies, classics like Dr. Caligari, Carnival of Souls, Phantom Carriage, a Vincent Price, a Boris Karloff, one from my beloved South Korea, a stop motion since my two favorites last year were both stop motion

Missing that I usually have: No John Carpenter, no Stephen King adaptations, no Dracula or Frankenstein for once, no Cronenberg though it almost happened and still might

We're kicking things off with a SUBSTITUTION! The Mummy is out, Pumpkinhead is in. I had The Mummy slotted in as Neomonster but...it really isn't one. Pumpkinhead is a much better example of one. I swapped it in despite thinking I wouldn't enjoy it all that much But I did! I expected a pretty terrible schlocky B movie, but instead I got a pretty fun schlocky B movie! It was more competently made and had a higher budget than I expected. I think I remember seeing bits from it when I was a kid and thought it was cheap and dumb at the time. But it's dumb fun Lance Henriksen was the standout. His relationship with his son at the start was v sweet, I would've watched a whole movie just about them! RIP to both, the kid dying was sad I liked the cartoonish villain among the teens. Kinda wish they didn't go for a redemption arc with him tbh and just kept him awful the whole time. He got a good death at least. Some pretty good kills throughout, I loved when Pumpkinhead just decided to bring that one girl up to the tallest tree just so he can drop her onto a boulder in front of everyone. What a little rascal! Pumpkinhead design was good. Movie was directed by Stan Winston who is a special effects legend (directing for the first time). He worked on Aliens, Terminator, Predator, The Thing, Jurassic Park, Avatar, you name it. Wild career. I think ole' Pumpky could've looked gnarlier but apparently he handed the creature design off to his usual collaborators since he was busy directing. Plus the budget was probably pretty low. Kinda shows a bit, but the creature still looks more than solid for a movie like this, just not necessary as unique as I would’ve loved is all LOVED Haggis the witch. She was my hero ★★★ average/good/interesting concept I've decided to forgo by usual ranking system where I pit each year's subgenre movies against each other. That's five movies now and it's making less sense to do it. And it'll save me time!

I think the seeds for my devotion to watch Henriksen in any piece of shit horror movie to this very day were actually planted in my psyche as a child by this movie. The pain he portrayed for his son was REAL. And then later on the regret of it all even before he realized what was actually happening. The whole backdrop of the lore spoke to me too. It felt very much like an Appalachian ghost story, with uncontrolled grief and anger manifested.

Goes without saying the sequels aren't good but sometimes, on an especially stony night, it's worth it for more Pumpky.
