oh man what a banger topic
*cracks knuckles*
1. Curly Fries - not even a question, fun shape and they're usually seasoned so even better. Way underutilized tho, we need higher class curlies than Arbys and Jack in the Box out there
2. Waffle Fries - best fry for dipping, great surface area, and probably the best fry in the fast food arena (Chick-fil-A)
3. Cottage Fries - dark horse for my #3 spot. This is even more underutilized than the curly, but goddamn these are the best thing in any breakfast buffet
------
4. Belgian Fries - this honestly might deserve a top 3 spot but I've never heard this term til today and I'm not 100% sure I know what this is describing. This SOUNDS like bar fries, which if it is then these are top tier. Perfect combination of crunch and softness
5. Cheese Fries - I mean, realistically I'd probably take this over any other kind of fry. But I feel like the cheese is kinda cheating, so it gets less respect. I don't even care what type of fry is underneath
6. Tater Tots - a good tot is hard to beat, but usually they get too greasy/soggy
7. Garlic Fries - see: cheese fries, although these aren't cheating as much as those. Red Robin bottomless garlic fries might just be the best fry from any chain restaurant
8. Crinkle-Cut - good, decent shape, but a little too much potato per fry
9. Steak - still good, boring shape, definitely too much potato per fry
10. "Chips" - like a blander, more boring steak fry. The malt vinegar is an inspired idea, but condiments shouldn't factor into this
11. Potato Wedges - this one's tough, because a well-seasoned, crispy potato wedge can be amazing. But more times than not they're just bland hunks of baked potato which is actually kinda gross!
12. Standard Cut - probably controversial, but McD's fries are wildly overrated (although tbf it's been an extremely long time since I had them). Just like crinkle/steak/wedges are too much potato, these are on the opposite side of that ratio. I shouldn't have to eat like five at a time for it to be worth my while
13. Chili Cheese Fries - I like the concept, but it really depends upon the chili. If there's too much beans/meat, that's a detriment. The spice is good, but at that point just give me cheese fries with a side of hot sauce
14. Sweet Potato Fries - I far prefer salty to sweet, so of course these are pretty low. I don't hate them, but they just can't measure up to REAL potatoes
15. Shoestring/Matchstick - a travesty. Everything that standard cut does wrong but so much worse. Nothing more to say, these just make me sad and are a waste of potato | |

Chili cheese fries
Cheese fries
Waffle fries, but only because I didn't see the crinkle cuts.
That said, fries are all about the condiments and or seasoning for me.
Brush a crappy fry with some oil and load it up with some old bay and you have a winner.
Any Fry dipped in gravy is better than any fry not dipped in gravy.
Load up that fish and chips with some malt vinegar and you are rolling.
Even the godawful things they call fries at McDonald's can be made edible with the right dip or sprinkle. | |

Sweet Potato Fries are hit or miss. Either a place does them really well or they're shit | |

Slso.sweet potato fries don't belong on this list, as they can stand alone. No condiments needed. I rarely order them because too many places overcook them, though.

The garlic/cheese/chili cheese also shouldn't be on this list since it's a totally separate thing from the cut. The Belgian too. | |

Voted: Waffle, Steak, Wedges in that order.
But the best fries are parmesan garlic / truffle and I would rather use a smaller cut for that, even a shoestring.
For Poutine and other sauced fries like curry fries I would use steak/chips/standard/crinkle.
Seasoning is irrelevant to the cut so Boc's curly call is bad since it's just really long standard really. Get better cut well seasoned fries if you want seasoned fries man. | |

I voted: Curly, Tater Tots, Waffle
But there are a lot of quality options on here. I don't quite get the love for cheese fries. When I think cheese fries, I think In-N-Out, which is basically a slice of american cheese melted over the fries, which is disgusting. Now, chili-cheese fries are amazing, but like Merc said, they really don't belong on this list.
That said, I'm not sure there is one on that list (other than sweet potato) that I wouldn't try and probably enjoy, so you can tell I'm an overweight American. | |

I went with cheese fries, curly fries and tater tots.
Cheese just makes everything better. I do love curly fries a lot and tater tots never let me down.
Some fries just don't cook as well as others and waffle fries is one of them I can never cook quite right and literally fuck ever going into a chick-fil-a | |

This thread inspired me to make some crinkle cuts with chili, cheddar and jalapeños last night. | |
