think this deserves its own thread considering it's potentially the beginning of the end of theaters as we know them

latest news: Nolan is very predictably NOT a happy camper!

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/christopher-nolan-rips-hbo-max-as-worst-streaming-service-denounces-warner-bros-plan

Nolan
Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service. Warner Bros. had an incredible machine for getting a filmmaker’s work out everywhere, both in theaters and in the home, and they are dismantling it as we speak. They don’t even understand what they’re losing. Their decision makes no economic sense, and even the most casual Wall Street investor can see the difference between disruption and dysfunction.

I fucking love movie theaters man. But it is what it is now.

They said one year. I don’t think they want to rid the world of movie theaters. It still pays.

Unfortunately lawyers gonna lawyer and it’s not surprising all these major execs woke up and were like hey woah wtf why didn’t I get asked about this.

Welcome to the real world where were all fucked!

I think once covid ends movies will come back. The quality of movies people expect cannot be afforded on a streaming movie budget.

Also hbo max still isn't on roku so I can't watch any of this til they get their shit together.

lol they SAY that buttttt if this move actually pays off for them in terms of subscribers, there's almost no way they can go back to the old model. Asking customers to pay the same amount for suddenly far less valuable content would be suicide. Them saying 'one year' is just a convenient out in case HBO Max somehow still flops despite this imo

The directors guild is also really against this deal which makes me wonder if this will be bad news for WB more than good news for hbo

It's crazy how they didn't even drop a line to guys like Nolan or Villueneve beforehand. Their golden geese are gonna be WALKING AWAY!

He likes his sandwiches to be Turkey and Swiss. Triangle cut. Let vern have his crust. Poison the part Rodney eats.

Going to the theaters to watch a movie with friend(s) is half the fun.

Hopefully it's only temporary.

People watching at home more kills half the fun with movies imo.

I totally agree. I miss the whole movie experience. We used to go to one with heated reclining seats where they serve food. I miss that.
