Through ep 2 now and DAMN Swearengen's a compelling character, I can see why he has so much hype
also I had no idea Olyphant was in this, I guess he's just the official TV western guy between this, Justified and ofc Bounty Law
Nick Offerman's guest appearance was great

man I'm really liking this. Through ep 7 now
|
BILL NOOOO :( I liked the way they did that scene, no time to even think about what was happening before he gets shot
also hey Liz Sarnoff wrote this one, that's a name I haven't thought about in a long time |
|
BOI O BOI did this ep feel oddly relevant. The way all the town leaders tried to tweak the language etc to downplay the 'plague' was so real. Wish they would've went even deeper into that tbh, like seeing more of the citizens' reactions |
|
get OUTTA there Alma!!!! I'm getting so nervous for her and Trixie, I'm sure this is gonna end badly for one of the two
The brother/sister arrival is interesting, with them apparently intentionally whoring out the sister on the DL. Curious what their angle is |

I'm so used to westerns having slower paces that this has felt p unique. I guess plot-wise this still moves fairly leisurely, but SCENE/dialogue-wise it feels p rapid fire. I feel like I miss a bit cuz I'll be soaking in what just happened in one scene and we're already diving headlong into another dialogue-heavy scene. AHHHH

also Calamity Jane is the best
They've done a good job filling the town with lots of colorful/distinct personalities. Not really a weak link in the bunch. I like Bullock and the Doc a lot too. And Swearengen is still stealing scenes obv

done with S1, good shit. Definitely a slow burner but the characters make it worth it
|
JESUS that scene with the kids was brutal. Honestly that put Tolliver above Swearengen as far as villainry goes, they're both psychopaths but that was on another level (and at least Al has kinda, sorta been shown to have a softer side)
Kristen Bell was great in that part |
|
Poor Reverend :( His scenes post-tumor were so uncomfortable to watch, that "walk among friends" with Bullock was honestly the most (and one of the few) heartwarming moment of the whole season |
|
lol Bullock becoming Sheriff was telegraphed so hard, I dig it tho. He's for sure one of my favorites
also WHERE'S CALAMITY JANE! Did I miss something?? I think the last scene with her was Charlie scolding her for being drunk, then she just kinda disappeared |
I only looked at the cast listing afterwards, I had no idea Mrs. Garret wasn't played by Carrie Coon (: She looks so alike

The acting wasn't the problem on that show!! And I gave it two whole seasons
I'll just watch Fargo S3 or Gone Girl again

My girl Jane is back!! Curtis is gonna be so psyched
Between that, "Welcome to Deadwood!", and the scene where Al gets a thumb up his ass this season's off to a SOLID start
I also see that Anna Gunn gets to play against type here with the part of the scorned, passive-aggressive wife |

AHHHHHHH these eps made me so uncomfortable. God as if kidney stones didn't make me cringe enough, seeing them in action in the 1800s was even worse. That shot of Al's blood dripping onto the floor. :x :x :x I did like that shot of everyone on the bed after though, that was p great
Also this appearance of Hearst's liaison is a cool development, I like seeing Cy have to put up with someone clearly more powerful than him now |

S2 DONE. Thought it was a step up over S1, all the added INTRIGUE was good. Dillahunt's Wolcott was a great addition, probably the best aspect of the season
|
I do feel like Bullock got kinda shafted, I liked him a lot in S1 but he just got kinda...boring as S2 went on. Just the frustrated/reluctant father all season long. Maybe his character will pick back up now that Alma looks to be back in the picture based on that ending
Hearst is kind of a disappointment so far after all that build-up tbh, Wolcott was way more intimidating. But he's only been in one ep so far so we'll see. I just was expecting some kind of larger than life presence after how much he was referenced and FEARED all season
E.B. was better than ever this season, I hated him in the beginning of the show but that's quickly spun into more of a love-to-hate thing, he's such a slimeball. And speaking of slimeballs I really hope Tolliver's not dead (assume he won't be), he's definitely another love-to-hate character in a different way
I really wonder where this is all going, or if this will continue to be a sort of slightly heightened slice-of-life kind of show all the way through. I mean with character arcs in particular (obviously the plot itself is mostly about showing the creeping in of civilization), I guess it's maybe sadly realistic that Trixie would stay so loyal to Swearengen all this time but I'm just waiting for that big moment where she separates for good. Waiting for those big character-turning moments from a bunch of others as well, but it's seeming like that might just not be what the show's going for |

damn S3 is gooood
|
holy shit that eye gouging in the brawl scene, JEEESUS that was brutal. For a show that really hasn't done much action that scene was really well done
boy the racism has stepped up this season! I'm so ready to be done with Steve, idk where they're going with that guy
Hearst has definitely stepped up his villainry and become the PRESENCE I hoped he'd be, even though I still don't think he's QUITE at the same level as Walcott (mostly just cuz Dillahunt was so good)
This ending is looking to get p crazy. An all-out WAR. P sad that it's almost over |

aaand done (except for the movie)
they saved the best for last, the S3 finale was probably the best ep of the whole show
|
what a THRILLING conclusion, even if I wish it would've ended up a little 'bigger' with all that build-up to the final conflict. But then again it would've been pretty out-of-character for the show to end so bombastically. Al having to kill the whore to placate Hearst was already brutal enough. Not to mention Ellsworth dying of course :( He was one of the GOOD ONES!
also WHAT I just realized Dillahunt played both Jack McCall AND later Wolcott. wtffff, I didn't recognize him as Jack at all |
great show. Like I said I'm usually a sucker for Old West era stuff so this was right up my alley. The characters were (almost) all great. Swearengen/Wolcott/Hearst/Dan/Bullock/Farnum being at the top
