11. Black Sabbath
12. The Incredible Shrinking Man

21. The Woman in Black
22. The Uninvited
23. The Gate
24. Forgotten
25. We're All Going to the World's Fair
Not the best batch! House that Screamed makes the top ten. Shrinking Man was good. Amityville and Wolf Man were just okay and are on the lower end. And congrats to Forgotten which only had to sit at the very bottom for a couple of weeks, World's Fair is my new least favorite. And it wasn't AWFUL so the list is still solid!
25 down, 14 left. 1.5 months left. Still on pace

14. Alien - Annihilation (Alex Garland, 20018)
|
watched this one with a friend where we were genuinely looking for something engaging and quality to connect with. Unfortunately, this film was a bad pick. From the very beginning, this thing has no idea what it wants to be. it tries to be spielberg, then it tries to be kubrick, then it tries to be tarkovsky, then it tries to be garland, and it somehow fails at all of the above abysmally. From plotpoints that get completely swept under the rug, weird inconsistent character implied knowledgebases, a script trying waaaaay too hard to be *deep* coming from a dude that genuinely doesnt understand what hes even going for, its just a mess. Nearly impossible to follow, boring as sin with horrendous expositiondrop dialouge throughout being parroted by the most bored nad disconnected looking talent ive seen in a while. its really clear that nobody on this film except gina rodriguez gave a fuck about what they were filming. Every single character has a problem, whether it be terrible writing (Josie (Tessa Thompson) and Cass (Tuva Novotny) are both acted well, but given fuck all script to work with beyond being charactatures of real people (Josie is the *smart* one and Cass is the *reliable* one) and thats about all we get.), terrible underutilization of good talent (Oscar Isaac gets to suffer in a bed and act depraved with terrible cinematography for a scene and a half and thats it, Jennifer Jason Leigh is playing, on paper, the most interesting character here, but Garland disallows her from ever showing any emotion, despite details we know about the character implying she should be much more emotive, and Benedict Wong straight up just power stances in a hazmat suit and asks 1 sentence questions to Portman for the entire runtime), or just simply a mixture of bad writing AND bad acting (Natalie Portman gives the worst performance of her life in this film, just totally lifeless and disconnected from what should be a very emotive time for her character, who is a military veteran who doesnt know how to hold a rifle, while Gina Rodriguez gets "the volatile" one treatment while doing a fucking horrendous job of it. her performance feels like middle school theater and not in a good way. its some of the most performative and least believable acting ive seen in years), its just hard to find anything in that regard worth praising. The cinematography, 95% of the time, looks like dogshit with the DP choosing to constantly film directly into light sources that shoot lens flares over all the intricate detail of the set designers. i know we're supposed to be in the *shimmer* but theres shots where you still get the light effect without sticking a lamp directly in the middle of frame making it impossible to even see fucking anything. aside from 1 specific sequence (NOT PICTURED) the cgi looks worse than 80s films ive seen with CGI. the movements are clunky, the design is undertextured and gross looking, just all bad. theres also a thousand plotholes like the cancer of JJL not even being part of the story until they need it for a mulligan, the fact that Gina's character witnessed the death of Cass yet still blames JJL and NP later on, like its insane to me that this even passed screen testing its so impossible to follow due to how disjointed and incomplete it is.
theres like, a sequence near the end that is truly gorgeous and more often than not the music is working well, but thats about all the priase i can give this thing. it pisses me off how bad this is because every negative aspect about this ive listed could have been better. Alex Garland has directed and written MUCH better before (Ex Machina, 28 Days), Natalie Portman and Gina Rodriguez can act better than this, its just really fucking dissapointingly bad. this is one i really wanted to like. Stalker but modern and women? sign me up! unfortunately it missed just about every mark and by the end i was more ready to turn it off than ive been in a while. dogshit film. |

37. Gothic Horror - Nosferatu (F.W. Murnau, 1922)
|
im not gonna rave and rave on about this one cause its of course a classic and youve all likely seen it and everything that can be said about this film has been said by someone else better already but it fuckin slapped. genuinely a few scary sequences, absolutely absurd that this is 100 years old, orlock is THE best looking classic monster flick monster, this thing is chilling and creepy but still a little campy and melodramatic. a fantastically complete film by the master that has totally stood the test of time. |
a timeless film that will outlive us all. 8/10

12. Giant Monsters - Godzilla (Ishiro Honda, 1954)
|
finally got the chance to see the OG Godzilla, and im pretty content with it! Of course, from a technical standpoint, the film is a marvel, and im always a sucker for some heavy handed anti-war commentary. I think that the way in which Honda chose to characterize Godzilla is really unique as far as horror-laced action films go, and i really enjoyed the characterization of Takashi Shimura's zoologist ideals alongside his muted but powerful performance. I also was pleasantly surprised at how feminist this film managed to be for coming out during such a conservative time, not super typical for high budget movies to feature. Momoko Kochi absolutely kills it. The dark shadows and contrasts in the cinematography never make this film unineristing to look at, the sound effects of zilla are rad as fuck (the first melodic noise track on an electric guitar for his screeches? fuck yeah!) and the pseudoscience behind the whole thing is campy but doesnt stand out among the rest of the film for suspension of disbelief. overall just a really solid flick that has earned its place in the canon. |

[Monster - Small Creatures] Mimic
|
I feel like I give a little mini back story of picking movies before discussing them and im sorry for that but WE NEED CONTEXT OK? bc when i was looking for 'small creatures' this movie came up as like 'scientists mutate cockroaches: bad stuff happpens!' and I LITERLLY picked this as a whatever movie just to watch. I fully expected some dumbass movie with two scientists who like, bore the fuck outta me the whole movie, and deal with weird bugs or some stupid shit.
Boy was I wrong.
I LOVED this. So much. It was obviously kinda weird and shit. It oddly reminded me of Tremors with how kinda silly it was? But it just... worked? There WERE scientists obv, but htere was such a fun and cooky cast of characters that I did not anticipate coming together to ward off human-sized cockroaches. The funnest surprise was the black cop (who for a small portion of the movie I suspected to BE a cockroach.. hehe oops) and IDK. I really just had so much fun watching it. The ending was a little MEH. I would have loved for the main dude to die and not miraculously survive, buttttt i'll give it a pass. The cgi effects were a little yikes but the real like, puppett or whatever you call it effects were def spot on and awesome. I MISS movies making full on puppets for this shit. Its so good.
Anyways, its up in the air if this high score like really is deserved or if its bc it blindsided me with actually being good when my expectation was boring garbage. |

I wish I caught this in theaters. I was trying to but never got my act together, I think it would've been an even better theater movie
But I liked it! Fun and entertaining. Rachel Sennott absolutely stole the show, she killed it. Even more excited to finally watch Shiva Baby now. I loved Lee Pace too, he was robbed. Everyone was good
Heard there was a great twist before I saw it. Wish I didn't. I thought it was super obvious as soon as the first death happened and then each future death just supported it. Kinda sucked the tension out of the movie since I was confident I knew what was going on but oh well, still fun and the actual reveal moment was comical
The kills were unfortunately pretty eh because of the twist but what can you do
Good cast, good music, fun/annoying characters. A fun time
★★★½ pretty good!/well executed

[Misc. - Body Horror]

Woof. Hated it!
I'm finding that this is my absolute least favorite kind of movie. I acknowledge that the editing is unique and the effects are grotesque and well done and all........but I hate it! Can't stand the chaotic sound effects that don't "match" what we're seeing, idk how to describe it. Hated the editing and the music. The grotesque vibe. None of it worked for me. Not saying I'm not down for a nasty time, I usually am, just not in this underground style
Eraserhead is my least favorite """""good""""" movie for the exact same reason (haven't seen it in 15 years tho). This was clearly influenced by it
Only movie that worked for me in this similar style was probably Angst from my 39 list like a year or two ago. That was the same vibe
This was just a waste of a good body horror spot. I knew 60 seconds in that this wasn't for me
★★ disappointing/uninteresting

My yearly Argento! This was one of his better ones imo
Follows his standard formula. I wonder if he ever got bored of it lol. But I always find it fun. Gruesome kills all in the same style and then a batshit killer reveal. Some of the kills in this were great. Always love his bright red blood
Fun to see John Saxon show up too
Good killer reveal

[Misc - Gothic Horror]
|
Probably the most popular horror movie I had yet to see? Certainly one of them. Glad to have finally checked it off
It...slapped! I liked it a lot. Loooooved the set design, so simple yet kooky. Also really loved the design of the title cards
I watched a restored version and it looked incredible. This movie is one hundred and TWO! Wild. The restoration was pretty amazing
Unfortunately the subtitles that the person uploaded to go with my version were fucked up and were only showing the first sentence of each title card. So I looked elsewhere and found a few different versions. Some were unrestored which looked...so bad in comparison, it was a shitty copy. Others had WAY different music. I got to reading about the different versions of the movie that exist out there now and some used different music which I found weird/didn't love. I don't even know if the version I watched was the original music so that kinda sucks, but I far preferred the music in mine to the other one. The other one was janky and dark, mine was more whimsical and old timey. I thought it fit better. Though tbh I probably would've liked the other version more if that's the one I started with
ANYWAY it was great. I didn't like the ending though, kinda lame. I heard the writers were pissed that the wraparound story was added during production. I would've been too, I wasn't crazy about it
But everything else ruled. Strongly recommend the restored version
★★★★ great/affecting/memorable

[Paranormal - Devil/Demon/Hell]
|
Man, these movies have been nice little surprises for me. Always wrote them off as C-tier 80's horror without having seen them, and tbf I'm sure everything after the second one IS (C might even be generous), but these first two really did it for me. I watched the first for the first time a year or two ago for this challenge. Rewatched it last night and watched this one today
It's definitely one of the better immediate horror sequels that were cranked out in the 80's. It beats the second Nightmare, Halloween, Child's Play, Friday the 13th, etc. in my book I think. These first two are a nice one-two punch together
A bummer that it wasn't directed by Clive Barker but it still held up in tone and style
Good goopy gore. Pinhead is a delight, I love when he just talks straight and gets down to brass tax. "Okay no more fucking around here Kirsty!"
The awful stepmom from the first and the dickhead doctor make for an easy to hate duo that rival her and Uncle Frank from the first. The doctor cenobite was a real asshole!
It lost be a little towards the end but overall a fun time
Also this replaced Haxan on my list. I'll check that out next year for sure, I'm sure it's great
★★★½ pretty good!/well executed

[Psychological - Phobia & Isolation] The Black Phone

This was pretty good! Just kinda average I guess? The scenes with the POS dad were uncomfy to watch, and the random like, visions/dreams with the daughter felt oddly out of place? But overall... SOLID. ... perhaps my shortest write up yet |

[Paranormal - Possession] Ouija
|
MEH. It was oookay. Kinda your typical like, demon haunting some kids stuff. The acting was p bad, and the characters fairly annoying. But overall it was decent I GUESS. I think I have issues with most possession/demon movies bc I find them so BORING. I think because when you're writing it you can do literally whatever you want with it? Like... idk if that makes sense. But there is hardly ever any rhyme or reasons someone dies/becomes posessed. It just like... happens. Which i think bothers me? Again I cant quite pin point the reason.
For example, the first girl of the friend group to die just kinda like. Becomes possessed in the bathroom and it throws her against the sink to die. Like? ok? Where is hte BUILD UP. Yoou know, maybe thats it. Maybe some of my fav parts of horror films is the like, CHASE or the FIGHt, an with possession thats hardly ever there. idk im ranting for no reason at this point, this was fine tho! |

[Paranormal - Devil/Demon/Hell] Ouja: Origin of Evil
|
So now, take all my issues and complaints about possession in the last ouija and throw it out the window !!
I REALLY liked this. Like, a lot. It had a pretty slow build-up, i'll be honest, but as SOON as Doris gets officially possessed in that FUCKING TERRIFYING scene... I was hooked, and the rest of the movie delivered. It even had a cute call back scene to the first one with someone being hung by the stairs.
I think I might be hyping this up more than needed bc of the ending. Idk if its been obv so far with my takes on movies but I LOVE a fkn good ending, and boy this one was great. I guess I dont wanna spoil it too much but I didnt really see it all coming together like that, and just simply was a big fan. It was KINDA jump scarey which isnt my vibe usually, but I think they were spread out enough and made enough sense that I rocked with it. Prob a top 3 movie of all the ones i've watched so far! (maybe top 5..)/center] |
