Been wanting to watch this one for a LONG time and glad I finally got around to it!
|
Damn, what a fantastic movie! I loved how the movie presented most of the "answers" up front (Black Phillip, the witch in the woods) and still made you question their veracity due to the family's paranoia. Speaking of paranoia, what a fantastic demonstration of how a seed of doubt can absolutely transform a single idea or statement, creating violent conflict in the midst of a loving family. The tension and build-up were so expertly done and realistically conveyed each family member's psyche unraveling. This was facilitated by their fanatical beliefs and consequential isolation from outside human contact.
The VVitch explored some interesting questions about where the line is between being devout and obsessive, how to balance independent thought with skepticism and maintain community despite differences of opinion, and whether we assume innocence or guilt in the actions of others without giving reductive answers. While it was set in the past, many of the characters' actions feel realistic in present day. Definitely walked away wondering how much we're controlled by our environment, how much groupthink or impassioned arguments directly or indirectly impact our own beliefs, and how easily the world we're used to could be turned on its head.
Which is all to say, SUPER well done, so glad I watched it, would heartily recommend to others! |

Gore - Extreme

God I can't remember wanting a movie to end so bad in a long time, it's 130 minutes long but it felt like I was there for 5 hours.
Okay, so this drums up a lot of discourse for being vile and twisted and you know what, it is. Like, I'm still a little conflicted on how to feel about it because it really is A LOT and perhaps I should sit a while on it but... I don't know.
Basically I didn't like it. I thought there were SEVERAL too many scenes of violence towards women that just felt very weird and unnecessary. Like this is 'shock' cinema and I guess that was the intent but especially with how all the themes of sexual violence were portrayed it felt like a cheap way to be uncomfortable and controversial? Like... you got me, I was uncomfortable! Good job! Like I feel like I'm struggling to voice my thoughts here because I don't MIND shock for the sake of shock, I just didn't like how things were handled here. I'm going to take an excerpt from a Letterboxd review because I think it's well worded.
"the aggressive violence thrusted upon the women of the film is one thing, but creating an almost jokey atmosphere surrounding it and what it adds to the story is more than discomforting, but rather dysfunctional." (Some guy of letterboxd)
Beyond this the plot truly is needlessly dense and just stupid on top of that. I didn't realize it was by the same person that did Audition but in hindsight I'm not sure how I didn't notice because a lot of the same techniques are used here. It does stylize and adds some FLAIR but it doesn't matter much when the core movie is just kind of dumb.
The actual GORE in the movie mostly looked awful really, most of the big gory scenes just came across mostly comedic. Honestly, a lot of the movie just read as a dark comedy, it just mixed in too much weird nonsense to really treat this way. It definitely wasn't a HORROR movie though. The sound was good and some of the scenes were very aesthetically pleasing.
Anyways I came out swinging here but while I don't like it, I didn't HATE it either. Kakihara is a very charismatic lead and his scenes were mostly entertaining to watch.
But most of all it DID satisfy my ever present desire to just see something insane that I could never think of because whoever thought of some of the scenes present here was truly just in a different dimension. The scenes where Kakihara bites the guys hand was wild and I couldn't help but laugh at the ...plotline? surrounding the one corrupt cop and the dog ear headband like WHAT?? There were a few other scenes that I really did enjoy purely for the audacity of it all, I think also of the introduction to Karen.
Anyways, I did not really enjoy this movie as a whole but I did enjoy individual parts of it. I won't ever watch it again, but you could I suppose. I wouldn't strongly recommend AGAINST it or anything because there is some value within it, it's just kind of gross, and not in the way I want it to be when watching a movie in the category GORE - EXTREME.

Hm! This was a toughie. This would've been easily the movie I was most excited for (before negative reviews rolled in) but happens to have the worst average rating on LB out of all 39 movies. Sitting at a 2.9, woof
I had high hopes for this because Garland is great. I thought it was......okay. Not horrible. I didn't hate it as much as many seemed to though I understand why they would. I also didn't like it nearly as much as I had hoped
I thought the beginning was pretty strong. The naked guy creeping around her house was v unsettling. Kinnear playing all the different men was a fun idea and I liked the concept of each of them being awful in their own sorta way. Loved the hand split and the birthing being so outrageous and comically long was amusing in a disturbing way
Buuuut I feel like it kinda had absolutely nothing to say. I guess I don't understand the point of any of it or it just wasn't as smart as it wanted to be. Bummer because Garland's first two were great, this is easily his weakest
I gave it a 7 at first because I didn't think it was as outright shameful as most others seemed to but then after I saw with it for like five minutes I lowered it to a 6
★★★ average/good/interesting concept

[Monster - Vampire]
|
Mannnnn, this was a bit of a disappointment for me too. I liked it, but this has definitely been one of the more classic horror movies that I hadn't seen yet, so my expectations have been pretty high and I expected to like it a lot more
I liked the 80's vibe. Fun soundtrack. Saxophone guy ruled. Big, crazy hair
I liked the gore during the final showdown, like the bathtub scene. The vampire attack scenes around town were good. Kiefer's villain was good
But it just kinda lacked..........................bite! For lack of a better word. It seemed like a clear response to Fright Night which had come out two years earlier, but Fright Night has more style and is more fun imo. Lost Boys just didn't do anything super original for me which is a bummer because I very much expected it to standout more, being a classic
Still good but sadly won't be super memorable for me
Oh yeah and this replaced Bit as my vampire movie because that one looked like trash

[Psychological - Madness & Paranoia]
|
This one I liked! Felt like a Twilight Zone ep in a good way
Great nightmarish atmosphere throughout the whole thing. Loved Mary the protagonist, I thought she was so funny. The ghoul guy was creepy, the groups of ghouls were creepy. Good organ score
Just some good old fashioned low budget, eerie, 60's fun
★★★½ very good/well executed

RANK TIME! Ten down
|
1. Ghostwatch
2. Carnival of Souls
3. Black Sabbath
4. The Sadness
5. Eden Lake
6. Men
7. Pumpkinhead
8. The Lost Boys
9. Sleepaway Camp
10. The Gate
Still a strong list! Nothing under a 6/10 for me which is...really good after ten movies tbh. Historically I would have quite a few stinkers by now, but I haven't disliked a single one of these
Carnival of Souls is a 7, the rest are 6's. Ghostwatch still holds the top spot while The Gate becomes my new least favorite of the bundle
One month down, 25% watched. Exactly 3.5 months left which means I'm keeping a good pace so far. But like two weeks of inactivity always sets me pretty far back

[Killer - Slasher]
|
Well first, this movie is very problematic for reasons that become clear a third of the way through. So that's a bummer. Apparently de Palma has said he wouldn't have made this movie today
Aside from that, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It made me wanna watch more de Palma, I really like his style. This was closest to Blow Out from what I've seen from him. The Psycho influence is crystal clear. It's like...Psycho meets Italian Giallo all wrapped in de Palma's style. Split diopter shots left and RIGHT! This movie is crammed full of them. My favorite shot was Caine in the foreground, the kid spying in the middle, and Nancy Allen in the way background. And then a reverse shot of that from Allen's POV. Looked great
Also loved Caine and Allen watching the same news story in a disorienting split screen. And that long pull back shot that turns into a split shot in the asylum. Great visual storytelling throughout
Won't spoil what happens like I usually do in here, but there was a great shock in the first thirty minutes and I loved it
Museum sequence is apparently classic and it's easy to see why. The ending shower scene and ofc the elevator sequence were great too
Great stuff overall, one of my favorites so far. Definitely more Giallo than Slasher in the end but that's okay
★★★★ great/affecting/memorable

Got to see this in theaters for it's 40th anniversary showing, which was a cool experience and not something I expected going into the horror challenge.
|
I know this is a horror classic, but I just couldn't get into it, even seeing it on the big screen. I've been a fan of older horror movies (The Shining, The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street) so I doubt it was the lack of modern effects that put me off. If I had to pinpoint, I think movies with a supernatural element and people crossing over between worlds just aren't my favorite? Reminded me slightly of Insidious and I didn't like that either.
It was certainly well made and the score was a major highlight. Acting was great, which isn't always the case with so younger children. I especially liked the exorcism lady and the mom. It was interesting that the family's reaction was to so defiantly stay in the house and try to save their daughter despite pretty horrible otherworldly experiences, and even the reaction to things flying across the kitchen in the beginning was surprisingly positive. A nice change from people immediately being terrified, but I'm not sure how realistic it felt.
Glad I finally watched this one since I do want to get through all the classics, but no particular interest in rewatching |

[Monster - Werewolf] An American Werewolf in London
|
It was... fine! Nothing superb or like groundbreaking. I RELLY loved the special effects. Its so refreshing watching an older movie and having the cool visuals rather than lame cgi. Especially how Jack kinda continuously deteriorates as the movie goes on, very cool.
The whole concept tho was pretty fucking dark lol. Like, your best friend dies to a werewolf, YOU are boutta turn into one, and then your undead friend is basically begging you to kill yourself... O.O DARK SHIT? but i like dark shit so i was here for it.
Again nothing groundbreaking which is to be expected from an older film, but overall it was good, I really dont have many issues with it! |

|
Another fine one! I think this is my first black and white movie i've watched from front to back? lol. As expcted it wasnt super action packed and the deaths were like... nothing really. But I thought all the underwater scenes were super cool and the creature itself was like kinda hilarious but also awesome? And I mean, really THEY came into his home.. i'd kill bitches too!!! Plus he just wanted a girl by his side :(
anyways, pretty medicore, right in the middle. It was cool at times and other times boring |

Man, this is such a fun, weird little movie. It's so visually and sonically chaotic in the most claustrophobic and in-your-face way imaginable. It's abrasive and gross and off-putting but I was completely drawn in and was enraptured from start to finish. It's an intense movie---the imagery itself might not be as "scary" for us today as it would've been when it was released, but the frenetic energy, crash cuts, insane close-ups, bonkers sound design, and overly abrasive score all come together to create a really harsh, gripping movie. It's also one of those films where you just kinda wonder if director/writer Shinyo Tsukamoto is okay. Like, does he need a hug? Does he need therapy? Why did he make this? I'm glad he did make it because this film was a fucking blast, but sheesh. Also, I have to say, the 67(!) minute runtime works super well. If this was two hours of this I don't know how I would've gotten through it because it demands so much of your energy and attention due to it being a complete and total assault on the senses. Absolutely a blast, would HIGHLY recommend it just because I can't fathom walking away from this without either loving it or hating it, and it's really doing a lot of interesting, creative stuff here. I'm giving it a 9 out of 10 because while I did love it, there's a certain je ne sais quoi in all my 10/10 films that this doesn't quite possess. Still, this is absolutely up there for me. |

Enjoyed it! Quite a bit more than I thought I would
I thought it was super solid. Never boring, well paced, fairly tense throughout. Hawke was the standout for sure, I thought he was great. Tbh I could've used more of him, I thought he was a bit underutilized and if they did more with him it would've boosted the movie to that next level. I loved whenever he would walk into the basement and talk some nonsense that the kid or the audience never fully understood. "Ahhhh it's all fucked up :( , I gotta go upstairs :( " I loved those bits
The main kid was good but his sister was even better, I thought she was great
The director's style from Sinister carried over to here big time. It worked well, especially since this took place in the 70's. He made a few cool stylistic choices that I liked
Fun concept too. The ghosts calling him to help him out. I think some of the ways they helped him could've been a bit more clever or interesting but it was still good
I almost gave it a 4 after watching but after sleeping on it..it was just missing that OOMPH! Something to make it really stand out. But for a modern throwback horror it was super competent and never had me rolling my eyes like many do. Good stuff
Oh yeah and this is replacing The Innocents as my Supernatural horror
★★★½ pretty good!/well executed
