So, it wasn't scary. But I wasn't mad about it? I kind of echo Curt in the way that I don't really know how to define this other than it's just an ambience horror film? Anyways, I thought it was phenomenally done. The color scheme of the movie was brilliant because I found myself forgetting I was watching a horror film and kept getting drug back into the happy family facade that was going on with the village, and I kind of loved it?
When I first walked out, I was a little upset that I didn't get to see any of the deaths in full or get a few more jump scares in there, but I think the few that they planted in there were so well spaced out that they really felt jolting when they happened. And choosing to show really gruesome things happening in such a casual way (Like the couple jumping off the cliff) took away from the scene in the moment but it kind of hits you a few minutes later when you settle in and realize you watched someone bounce off a rock and didn't feel THAT bad about it.
And I felt like the hammer moment with Josh (rip) was a good jump scare. It actually made me jump because of how relaxed the rest of the film had been. But not showing us the full details of the death helped keep up the facade that everything wasn't fully evil, and helped put me in the mindset of Dani.
Florence did sososooso good. I need to go back and watch more movies with her in it because I was honestly blown away by her performance. I think without her, this movie could have been a mess but she brought so much to the table that it really tied everything together.
I only had a few complaints about the movie in that I feel like a lot of concepts were introduced and never got wrapped up. Like the girl tied up in the first little outhouse. Or why they all walked backwards when they picked flowers. Or how they had so many pictures of the Mayflower girls when they only do it every 90 years. WHOMST KNOWS. Still really enjoyed it and I'd probably give it a 8 or 9 as well. |

outhouse girl was her sister! Just a vision. She wasn’t tied up, it was just the hose taped to her face |

OH. That makes sense. One question answered, two more to go.
Also, that opening scene with going through her parents house and seeing it. And Dani just sobbing was so well done. I've never felt so excited during just the title part of a movie. |

prob won't watch it but this has one of the most striking posters I've seen in a while
I dig the broad daylight/summery aesthetic going on here in general, p unique for the genre |
You should watch it, it’s funnier than it is outright scary. You’ll be perfectly fine | |

Ari Aster sure knows how to create an atmosphere. Just to touch on what Josh and Curtis said, this definitely isn’t a “scary” movie but all in all it’s so unique in it’s execution, that it didn’t bother me. I’d much rather a horror movie try and teach me or tell me something instead of scaring me.
Although it didn’t have a scene that haunted me like the car crash in Hereditary, I still enjoyed it more than I did Hereditary. Where Hereditary kind of split off into so many directions, this felt so much more organized, grounded, and overall cohesive. I loved it.
I thought it brought a fresh perspective on the cult genre. This is a movie not only about learning to break away from a toxic relationship, but it’s a movie about finding a community that supports you, strengthens you, and empowers you to do what’s best. They could have easily made this just a creepy cult movie, but in a really fucked up way, you can learn to admire what these people are doing? After her family’s tragedy, Dani feels so trapped by Christian. Every time she’s having a panic attack, she ends up alone. The one times she’s being consoled by Christian, she’s face down while he’s kind of just sitting there, not really knowing what to do. Flash forward to after she finds him “cheating” on her, she is essentially met with the other women of the village to help express her sadness. They look at her dead in the eyes and essentially say, we’re here for you, we’re feeling this with you. It’s HAUNTING yet ENDEARING at the same time.
You look at the friend circle of Christian, Mark, and Josh and you think...man these guys are awful. They’re negative, manipulative, deceiving and disrespectful. Counter that with the cult who are supportive, cheerful, and overall accepting. It’s a really interesting look at community culture.
Kind of like Hereditary I definitely have some questions and felt that certain scenes/characters were a little unnecessary. What exactly was the point of the incest child? Did that lovemaking scene really need to be that weird?? What exactly were the vices of the other couple? Why did they have to die?
Overall, I really enjoyed this. Definitely gonna be one of my favorites of the year. The 2.5 hour runtime surprising did not bother me at all. GOOD SHIT!

The visuals, acting, portrayal of relationship dynamics, foreshadowing, etc. are on a different level from the vast majority of horror movies, which makes it all the more disappointing that it still resorts to characters being idiots (or one specific character in this case: Christian) to move the plot forward.

"I'm sure it was just a miscommunication" after Simon and Chloe are suspiciously separated
"We need to be open to their culture" after seeing a ritualistic suicide--actually, none of the characters besides the Brits had a realistic reaction. They were initially shocked but it didn't really last long at all.
"I really shouldn't, I'm afraid I'll have a bad trip" after being handed a mysterious beverage, to which one of the cultists is just like "Drink it" and he's like "Eh ok" |
