Thelma + A solid supernatural coming of age story. Has some really great scenes, loved the opening and the flashbacks. Eili Harboe gives a very subtle and great performance. The relationship with the parents is really well done. The decision to kill off the father feels very cruel on Thelma’s part, yet is still motivated by the controlling nature and threatening presence he has on her life. It’s complicated, which makes it feel more real. I wish her abilities had more explanation to them, or at least a more concrete set of rules so there was a better understanding of what actually happened to Anja and how she returned. But yea, its a very touching, subtle yet sometimes too subtle, story. SCORE - 7/10 Paranormal. - Witches & Occult. Blackcoat’s Daughter v Midsommar v Thelma Super easy to rank to these. Midsommar nails the win here, giving S2 and the definite victory of the three years. CONGRATS TO S2! Thelma gets 1 point, unable to save s3 from last place, and Blackcoat gets 0, still giving s1 a close second. A Quiet Family + Pretty great to watch a young Song Kang Ho and Choi Min-Sik bouncing around. Easily my two favorite korean actors. Weird to finally see Choi in a comedic role but he was great. So yea, the movie is a solid Korean ROMP. Nothing outstanding, but a good time nonetheless. Loved the bit with Song Kang Ho and the assassin. Just a lot of clever writing here. But yea, GOOD SHIT. SCORE - 7/10 Psychological. - Madness & Paranoia. Jacob’s Ladder v Berberian Sound Studio v A Quiet Family Tough to call. Jacob’s Ladder gets 0 points. I think I’ll give the 2 points to uhhhhh….ummmmm...I’m writing this in real time...uhhhhhhhhhh Berberian? AQF is fun and clever and Berberian does a great job of creating this uncomfortable dreadness and the creative use of sound. I think Berberian gets the edge for being so different and creative. So yea, Berbian gets 2 and AQF gets 1. I’m pretty sure that gives S2 the win, but we’ll make it OFFICIAL in the next post. November + So, I sorta of loved this? The opening scene is one of the most ridiculous things Ive ever seen. The entire movie is so bizarre and unique. The characters are a bit underdeveloped and the story itself feels overly simplistic and disconnected at times, but the whole movie has this dark fairy tale vibe to it. The cinematography is gorgeous and the music is perfect. It’s a trip. SCORE - 8/10 Psychological. - Fanaticism. Martyrs v Santa Sangre v November Martyrs gets 2 points. I found Santa Sangre really interesting and bizarre, but I think I enjoyed November just a bit more, possibly due to recency bias. November gets 1 point and Santa gets 0. Trouble Every Day + Okay so, I’m all for vague, subtle, and even incomprehensible movies… but at some point, something’s gotta give. This narrative is so deeply hidden that it makes 3/4ths of the movie almost unwatchable. The performances are quiet, the script is quiet, everything is quiet. It’s incredibly frustrating. I will say though, the “sex” scenes or “murder” scenes are horrifying. The screams are uncomfortable and the way it’s shot is awkward and tough to watch, which seems to be the point. I never want to watch this again, for both good and bad reasons. But yea, I got the sense that it was supposed to be a metaphor for a man having to unleash his “demons” before committing himself to a normal life of marriage. I don’t know. It was rough. SCORE - 5/10 Misc. - French Extremity. Satan v Inside v Trouble Every Day Great. Just great. I got 3 5/10 movies here. They’re all incredibly different with the only similarity being that I didn’t enjoy them. If I had to rewatch one of these movies… I think I’d watch Satan, so s1 gets 2 points. The kills in Inside were gruesome, but the story was so ridiculous and stupid. I am going to give 1 point to s3, just because I believe there’s a deeper meaning in this movie that either reveals itself more clearly on rewatch or I just missed it because I’m an idiot. S3: 28 S2: 41 S1: 39 Only THREE movies left. Even if s3 wins all three match-ups, it still comes in last place, confirming that this year SUCKED. I don’t remember the match-ups for the next three categories, but with 9 points up for grabs, I gotta think s1 might pull it this out now since it was the more consistent year. Only time will tell!!!!! Images + What a mindfuck. You never really understand what’s going on, other than Cathryn is CLEARLY crazy and dealing with imaginary visitors. The movie does a great job of walking the line between confusing and understanding. I always had some idea of what was going on, I just continuously questioned if it was real or not. The ending was pretty much what I expected, although I thought she was going to kill the girl instead of her husband. Loved Susannah York’s performance and loved the sound design. All the whispers in her head were super creepy and really gave the movie a sense of uneasiness. SCORE - 7/10 Psychological - Phobia & Isolation. Hidden v Session 9 v Images Pretty EASY for me. Session 9 was a huge miss last year, and although Hidden was a nice gem, I’d still give Images the W here. S3 gets 2 points. S1 gets 1 point. S2 gets 0 points. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde + I was really looking forward to this one. I recently watched the Best Years of our Lives and loved Fredric March’s performance. I thought he was really good here, but I didn’t love the Hyde character. The man is just… a monkey! He was also just a little too campy for me. I went to youtube and watched some other Hyde transformations and really loved John Barrymore’s performance. I think less is more and what he was able to do with just his face was way more effective and chilling than the loads of prosthetics they used on this one. I also was pretty back and forth on the camera work. The POV angles felt super ahead of its time but were a little distracting or awkward. It’s a solid watch, but definitely not one of my favorites in the classic horror genre. SCORE - 6/10 Monster - Classic. Vampyr v Dracula v Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I’m not sure what to do here. At the time of watching Vampyr, I thought it was super slow and confusing, which is why it was one of my least favorites. I think if I went back and gave it another shot, I’d be able to appreciate it a lot more for what it accomplished. Until then, I can’t really put it above either of the other two movies. So, I’m giving s3 2 points. S2 1 point. S1 0 points. The Wolf of Snow Hollow + Jim Cummings has such a great voice. His acting feels authentic and hilarious, yet there’s something about his work that feels a little off. I found the tone to be a little all over the place. I didn’t like the constant cutting between the attack scenes and scenes with the police. The edit felt a little sloppy, as well as the music choice. Some of the acting was a little rough, mostly the daughter. Riki Lindhome was great and watching Robert Forster made me a little sad. You could tell that he was a little rough around the edges due to his age. But yea, I thought this had some great moments of levity mixed in with the really tense scenes. The ending felt a little out of nowhere, the killer felt a bit dropped in. Maybe I missed it, but it would have been nice to set up that character earlier on. Jim’s character was essentially the same as Thunder Road, so I’d really like to see him in something more different. SCORE - 6/10 Monster - Werewolf. Wer v The Howling v The Wolf of Snow Hollow What a SHIT SHOW! Fuck you Wer! You’re one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen! I hate you! 0 points for you! 1 point for Howling and 2 points for Jim Cummings! S3: 23 S2: 40 S1: 36 Six more movies to go and it’s looking like a race between S2 and S1. S3’s goal as of now is either to spoil things for one year or the other. My money is S2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 + I will start off by saying that I’m not CRAZY about TCM. It’s probably the one horror classic that I don’t really have in my favorites. It has an incredible aesthetic to it but the final act feels so drawn out and obnoxious. So yea, going into this I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it too much. Personally, I found this to be a little too ridiculous for me. The radio station scene is great, but I can’t say I enjoyed anything else. Characters were cartoonist, scenes felt way too long, and it didn’t really have that same gritty look to it as the original. I totally understand if people love it for those reasons, it just wasn’t really for me. I’m also not a Rob Zombie fan, and I feel like TCM and TCM 2 are huge inspirations for him. SCORE - 4/10 Gore - Cannibal. Ravenous v Neon Demon v Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 I am CLEARLY not a big cannibal fan. Although I do love Raw! Anyway...umm I can’t remember how I ranked Ravenous and Neon Demon… but I think I’ll give Neon Demon 2 points. Ravenous 1 point. TCM 2 0 points. Bad Taste + This was exactly what I thought it would be. It’s the movie Peter Jackson made before making Brain Dead. It’s got a very student film look to it, but it’s loaded with charm. The plot is all over the place and filled with nonsense but I can’t help but forgive it because it’s Peter Jackson. It’s a great group watch and something I’d love to see anything at a midnight horror theater showing. SCORE - 6/10 Gore - Splatter. Braindead v Phantasm v Bad Taste Peter Jackson, King of Splatter! What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? + I originally gave this a 6 but bumped it up to 7 after some thought. I really enjoyed it, especially the performances, but the runtime just felt a little dragged. A lot of the “can she do something before Jane gets home” scenes felt repetitive. Loved the ending on the beach though. “We could have been friends this whole time” is a great line. SCORE - 7/10 Misc. - Revenge. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance v Irreversible v What Ever Happend to Baby Jane? This is a TOUGH category. Irreversible is really difficult to judge, not just because it’s Gaspar Noe but because it’s hard to say you enjoyed a movie with a uncomfortably long scene of sexual assault. It’s the style of the camera work, commitment of the performances, and the creative story structure that make it so impressive. Irreversible gets 2 points. Lady V gets 1 point. Baby Jane gets 0. Horror Noir + A really solid horror doc. Really enjoyed the pairing of Keith David and Ken Foree. I thought it had a lot of great observations on race in horror, but I guess the structure felt a little flat for me? It sort of felt like a simple walkthrough African American cinema history. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it made the overall watch a little less dynamic than other really great docs. Surprised there was no talk of Wesley Snipes and BLADE! SCORE - 7/10 Misc. - Meta. Fright Night v One Cut of the Dead v Horror Noir. Fright Night is the KING! One of my favorite movies we’ve watched in the 39. 2 points for sure. Horror Noir gets 1 point. One Cut gets 0. Angst + That was messy...but in a good way? It’s a genuine portrayal of a psychopath, good and bad. The movie does a great job of setting up the “profile” of this guy who is clearly unstable and unthreatening. The rest of the movie is us in the driver seat with him, seeing how sinister and pathetic he really is. The murders are clumsy, awkward, and really hard to watch. He has this perfect image of what his murder is suppose to look like, but in the end it’s just pathetic and sad to watch him kill these innocent and helpless people. The camera work is super disorientating, but it compliments the tone of the movie really well. I’m not really sure how to feel about it. This stuff isn’t really my THING but it’s hard to deny that it accomplished what it set out to do. SCORE - 7/10 Psychological - Home Invasion. The Strangers v Funny Games v Angst. As horrible as Funny Games is to watch, I’ve grown to respect it more and more for what it does and its style. Funny Games gets 2 points. Angst gets 1 point. Strangers gets 0 points.
