When any one being believes their life is on a strong trajectory toward perfection, that thought immediately causes a domino effect in which all that was once grand is washed away in a flood of Wizard Godly water to be replaced with utter dragon dung. This fact was made clear to handsome, well built, even-sized white teethed Cormac McLaggen when he decided he needed an adventure just like that Harry Potter last year who saved some sort of eternal youth object only to have it destroyed promptly because there were rumors You-Know-Who might return. The entire wizarding world put that unhappy thought promptly out of their heads and focused on the poor Flamel's who were looking particularly wrinkled and forlorn these days.
Cormac might have been a little arrogant, he might even have been one of those students who loathed Potter up until The House Cup was awarded to Gryffindor after so many years of Slytherin reign. Cormac was no brainless git, though. He knew Potter had landed upon a popularity gold mine when he broke a thousand school rules to pieces in his first year and was rewarded for it. Seeker of the Gryffindor Quidditch team for flying on his broom when strictly forbidden from leaving the ground, no punishment at all for going down the only forbidden corridor in a million castle corridors because he was a nosy prat. Well, this year was Cormac's year. He was going to make a name for himself if he had to get expelled to do it.
Thankfully, however, the school was putting on a massive contest of outwitting, outplaying and outlasting a group of both students and adult wizards alike this year. Cormac was quite certain it had a lot to do with their new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, the even more full of himself Gilderoy Lockhart, whom Cormac was forced to have to take a liking too since they were put on the same tribe at the beginning. Cormac also did not think much of Albus Dumbledore, their current headmaster, and rumored to be the most powerful wizard in the world, joining in on the action and also being on Cormac's tribe. How was he supposed to maintain his confidence with competition like that?
Then Cormac thought, this was an opportunity to show his charisma, his cunning, his knowledge as a third-year student to the younger bunch, his relatability to the older crowd. In short, he was going to be an everyman the competitors would want to not only keep around but work closely with. This strategy was quickly helpful in forging a small bond with Draco Malfoy, whom Cormac was quite certain had entered the competition for the same reason he had, but as a second year, he was completely in over his head along with youngest Weasley boy and Potter's best friend, Ron Weasley.
Because of these shortcomings, Cormac decided to put his focus on cracking into the four house common rooms and taking each idol in turn so as to have as much safety as possible. Incredible though it may be, Cormac missed out on the Gryffindor idol to the only fish in the list of contestants. How embarrassing it was for everyone involved. There were still three more out there, however. For the Slytherin common room, Cormac and the rest were tasked with creating a Polyjuice Potion and needed to collect potion ingredients first. Cormac knew exactly where he wanted to search first and decided on Snape's private storage closet. Little did he know there would be a nearly impossible password standing in the way of his success. Truly, this was not going well.
It became steadily worse as Cormac tried a combination of numbers for the Hufflepuff Common Room and failed equally at finding any in the correct spot on his only go at it for the round. On top of that, Cormac used his brains to figure out the Ravenclaw clue and found the Ravenclaw Idol only to be throttled completely with another inconceivable password. Cormac was in a panic and decided to give the reward challenge a try. He was so distracted by his recent failures he managed to skip over a complete line of instruction and failed even more spectacularly at becoming immune or picking his own tribe. It was a complete catastrophe ramified by Madame Pomfrey taking over for the incapacitated Ron Weasley and choosing him for her tribe, to which Cormac was extremely grateful.
Cormac quickly made a list of his tribemates and how well he had communicated with them thus far based on O.W.L. grades: (O)utstanding, (E)xceeds Expections, (A)cceptable, (P)oor, (D)readful, (T)roll.
1. Albus Dumbledore - T
2. Draco Malfoy - A
3. Fred Weasley - A
4. Rubeus Hagrid - T
5. Gilderoy Lockhart - A
6. Poppy Pomfrey - E
7. Rita Skeeter - A
8. Ronald Weasley - P
Excellent, Cormac thought, there was room for improvement. As one of his favorite muggle authors would say, the game is afoot. Cormac would do his very best to keep this group together, but would equally do all he could to remove his competition whenever he might have the opportunity. With a twinkle in his eye to match Dumbledore's, he set to work. | |
