By popular demand, and here I'm using the word "popular" to mean "Jamie" which is the first and last time those two words are ever synonymous, here is the second installment of Kitty's RJ's (and Jen's) Totally Objective Gif Ranking Thread!

In this thread, Jen and I will rank, from worst to best, the Rites of Passage .gifs that Stephen has so graciously provided for us. A disclaimer ahead of time, these rating are not a reflection on the work Stephen has done in creating these images. If it were, they would all be in a 24-way tie for last place because we as a community must constantly remind Stephen of his place. This is also not a judgment of the people or even the characters in the game, because if that were the case it would be a 24-way tie for first. No, we here are judging these gifs artistically, dramatically, holistically, and a whole host of other adverbs that make us sound like washed up Art History majors.

In preparation for this thread, Jen and I have individually ranked each one of these gifs from 1 to 24 in two categories, Clip and Quote, to represent the duality of man and also the two obvious halfs of each gif. These two ratings are then averaged to produce an Overall Ranking which is an objective and completely correct designation of how good their gif is. You can argue with this if you enjoy being on the wrong side of history.

With that in mind, let's get this started before FTC starts so without further ado ...

24. Corey
Posted Image

Edgic Rating: MORN
Corey postures menacingly and shirtlessly for the camera, reminiscent of a wild animal trying to scare away a predator. Trying to scare people away in an ORG is a decidedly un-Christian act and reminds me of Judd Sergeant.

Average Clip Rank: 22.5 (Jen: 24, RJ: 21)

Posted Image

True.

Average Quote Rank: 19.5 (Jen: 20, RJ: 19)
The quote veers dangerously close to poignancy, as Corey acknowledges his perception in the game, but as we reach the last sentence, what could have been a great quote peters out with some stock standard Survivor-the-day-after summation of his time in Okanagan that obscures the ups and downs Corey endured for 2 months on his way to a commendable fourth place. Come on Corey! Hit those heartstrings for us when we least expect it!

Overall Average Ranking: 21 (Jen: 22, RJ: 20)
As a fourth place character, Corey had a more dynamic story than his gif gives him credit for. I found him much more relatable than this gif depicts him, and that's why he sits at the bottom of these rankings.

23. Lexi
Posted Image

Edgic Rating: UTRM
The curse of the first boot is that they don't get to give us the material we know they have. Lexi is tarnished by the same affliction that plagues Nicole Delma, Jessica deBen, and a host of others that I'm sure are lovely people just like Lexi.

Average Clip Rank: 22 (Jen: 21, RJ: 23)
Lexi fixes her hair once ... twice ... three times with a frenzy that shouts "Bless this mess". It's a very appropriate gif for somebody who was blindsided by the game before she could find her footing, and her low ranking only speaks to how strong many of the others were.

Average Quote Rank: 19.5 (Jen: 20, RJ: 19)
Breaking - Pending first boot wishes not to be first boot. It's a very narrative-appropriate yet vanilla quote that lacks the punch that goes along with the tumultuous first Tribal Council associated with Lexi's exit from the game.

Overall Average Ranking: 20.75 (Jen: 21.5, RJ: 20)
The first boot from the game barely edges out the first boot from the finale. It's a shame for Lexi, but it's a product of having such little material from such a short time in the game, and I refer you all to our disclaimer about how these rankings are not an indictment of the players and are not to be treated as such.

22. Brian
Posted Image

Edgic Rating: UTRP
Brian is very approachable and happy in this clip. It's endearing in a very Kelly Shinn-esque way. (Peace be upon her.)

Average Clip Rank: 15.5 (Jen: 12, RJ: 19)
Brian bashfully smiles and runs a hand through his hair, practically oozing positivity, but not projecting it. The discrepancy between my own ranking and Jen's shows the spectrum of what pure non-offensive positivity does for two very different people. If you're a good person, like Jen, it puts you in the top half. If you're me, you end up changing the channel looking for a show about cagefighting.

Average Quote Rank: 24 (Jen: 24, RJ: 24)
I'm pretty sure Rupert Boneham tweets this once a week. There are scores upon scores of better Brian Wojan quotes to choose from, and we recognize our shortcomings as production.

Overall Average Ranking: 19.75 (Jen: 18, RJ: 21.5)
Brian Wojan is a lovely person whose presence you learn to enjoy more and more the more time you spend with him. Unfortunately with a 2-second gif, you don't get a lot of time to enjoy him more and more.

21. Tyler
Posted Image

Edgic Rating: CPM
Exasperation coupled with a newfound resolve reminds me almost of Rafe Judkins without the needless pearl-clutching and hand-wringing over every single thing.

Average Clip Rank: 17.5 (Jen: 19, RJ: 16)
We've all been there Tyler. Sometimes you've got to take a second to just put your face in your hands and wonder what happened to your life that you're playing ORGs.

Average Quote Rank: 19.5 (Jen: 17, RJ: 22)
A little too gamebotty for my taste, Tyler gives us a page directly from the script of "Straight White Male Playing An ORG: The Book: The Movie". This quote serves as proof that the Ties That Bind twist was unfair as it knocked out people who had pretty decent heads on their shoulders.

Overall Average Ranking: 18.5 (Jen: 18, RJ: 19)
Tyler is a departure from the mold so often seen in ORGs, and while bits of his competitiveness and game savvy are on display, there's a lack of expression here that keeps a wall between him and the viewer.

20. Scott
Posted Image

Edgic Rating: UTR
This is like wondering all season why Brett Clouser didn't get any confessionals, and then you get one and you're like "Oh ... that's why."

Average Clip Rank: 23.5 (Jen: 23, RJ: 24)
This is a very visually uninteresting gif, from the black bars on the side (Turn your phone sideways Scott!) to the lack of present action compared to many of the other gifs. There was no way I could put anybody else behind this gif, and what I'm calling "The Nipple Effect" is the only thing saving Scott from the bottom of Jen's list.

Average Quote Rank: 12.5 (Jen: 12, RJ: 13)
Well ... hey. That's actually a pretty nice quote Scott. Scott demonstrates self-awareness and self-reflection while still connecting with the viewer on an emotional level. Without looking it up, I know exactly what event he's referring to, and it serves as a nice touchstone after the most hectic Tribal Council of the season.

Overall Average Ranking: 18 (Jen: 17.5, RJ: 18.5)
Scott pulls himself from a dismal finish into the top twenty via a very solid pullquote. Scott had a lot to say in this game, and that might have caused some people to dismiss him at times, but if you did you missed out on the moments like this.

Edgic Rating: MOR
24 giant characters isn't a perfect cast. You need the "glue guys" (and gals) like Leslie Nease to make a season.

Average Clip Rank: 15.5 (Jen: 13, RJ: 18)
Lisa corrects all of the visual issues with Scott's clip and shows us that narration with little action can be visually stimulating if it fills the frame has some visual dynamics caused by the outdoor setting. Lisa's gesticulating obviously flips the switch a little more for Jen than it does for me, but that's just the Brian Wojan effect for ya.

Average Quote Rank: 16 (Jen: 16, RJ: 16)
Self-awareness is a boon in these rankings, and Lisa demonstrates it here. Unlike Corey, she sums up how she thinks she is viewed by the other players in the game, not by the viewers, and keeping the fourth wall intact like that serves her well.

Overall Average Ranking: 15.75 (Jen: 14.5, RJ: 17)
Big rating jump from 20 to 19, but I still expect an angry message from Miller that her ranking barely beat her placement.

Fun fact: Lisa did all of her confessionals outside because it was more realistic to Survivor. Another fun fact, brother Miller told her realistically she wouldn't be wearing a fancy dress in the woods playing survivor.

Edgic Rating: UTRN
Not a lot going on here, and I teetered between mixed and negative before I decided the awkwardness of this clip reminded me of John Raymond.

Average Clip Rank: 13.5 (Jen: 10, RJ: 17)
Chris is self-conscious talking to a camera by himself, so he fills the natural pauses in his thought process with weird filler moments like these. Jen apparently likes them. I'm not the biggest fan.

Average Quote Rank: 17 (Jen: 14, RJ: 20)
I'm over the schtick, Chris. Chris showed himself to be a savvy player in Palmyra and was taken out of this game mainly by the Social Justice approved twist that was Ties That Bind. So I know he's capable of more than playing dumb like this, and I wish he'd be willing to accept the vulnerability of putting the deeper side of him on display.

Overall Average Ranking: 15.25 (Jen: 12, RJ: 18.5)
This 2 second clip represents 84% of the solo confessionals Chris posted correctly and on time this season.

I picked this clip actually. It made me laugh because the Maryland kids like to make funny faces.

17. Zac
Posted Image

Edgic Rating: MORP
Aww look how happy he is. He's like a little Gabe Cade if Gabe's issue was playing way too hard instead of not playing at all.

Average Clip Rank: 13.5 (Jen: 15, RJ: 12)
Zac does a little dance for us, causing his camera to shake as if we are dancing with him. The result is a scene which makes the viewer feel like Kate Winslet in the scene when she's spinning with Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. If that visual construction is good enough for James Cameron, it's good enough for me. How many Best Picture Oscars do you have?

Average Quote Rank: 16.5 (Jen: 15, RJ: 18)
Zac crammed a lot of storylines into a very short time in the game, and unfortunately this quote makes use of none of them. While there is a bit of reflection, there's not enough there to really attribute it to Zac, and what we're left with another quote that's just a block down the street from a Rupert Tweet.

Overall Average Ranking: 15 (Jen: 15, RJ: 15)
This is the only time on that Jen and I end up with an identical score for one of these gifs.
