Robert coughed as the world turned red. Horrible, disturbingly bright red. He blinked a few times to clear his head from whatever the hell that disgusting stuff that went in just was. Then he looked around at where he was.
It was very hard to judge. The room was tiny and cramped. There was no room at all to stretch or to move. There also didn't appear to be any obvious exit points or ways out. He fumbled for a latch and gave up very quickly with a dejected sigh.
Blinking once more, he turned his attention to the mass of monitors that filled the world in front of him. There were a series of very small screens containing an image of an eye which all surrounded one enormous image. The eye didn't blink, it just stared him dead on.
A voice boomed out and made Robert jump up, bashing his head on the low ceiling.
"Tell me Robert, what was it like to die?"
Robert scowled a little.
"Not the best thing I've ever felt." He said miserably.
"No." The voice boomed out.
"I don't suppose it was. The thing is Robert I know all about death and what you have to go through. I can honestly relate. In a very very real sense. It brings me a little joy to see you back in the world and being give your second chance."
Robert stared.
"Tell me Robert, don't you ever ask the question why? Is it not important to know why you were brought back from nearly being ferried through the gates themselves. Moreso, why at that moment so you could skip along with a new group of companions. It seems all a little...convenient...don't you agree?"
"Wild coincidences do happen. I can assure you, I've seen them all. But this...doesn't it feel like much more? I mean the odds are so obscure...it's almost as if somebody wanted it to happen wouldn't you agree?"
"But these are just my wild conspiracy theories obviously. Robert, this little chat wasn't why I brought you here."
"How much do you trust your de facto group leader, Roth? He appears, he firmly dictates where you will go and what you will do. Admittedly he's never unpleasant about it and he didn't seem to object to your corpse appearing in front of him which is somewhat nice, but do you trust the man?"
"You witnessed him get nearly crushed to death by a giant hell-snake and by his own admission he didn't pass out when all the rest of you did during that unfortunate...event in phase 15. What gives an old man such strength and power Robert?"
"If you feel you can't trust him, actions must be taken. I have placed in your backpack a bulletproof vest for your protection, and a special gun. The gun is so special that it can only be fired at Roth. Any other use will fail. Should you ever need to deal with the old man...you have the power now."
"More to the point, I just now brought Roth in here. It's important to establish trust and it's important you see just what he's capable of. So I gave Roth a gun too, with your name on it. He is sitting right now, down these stairs, considering putting one between your eyes. Why? I told him he would be rewarded. But I'm sure if you question him on it he will conveniently lie."
Robert shuddered a little.
"Don't be so afraid. He doesn't know you have a bulletproof vest. I didn't tell him that part. So when he shoots you he will be very surprised when you don't fall down and die. Then, I trust you to do whatever it takes to kill him."
"Of course upon pulling that trigger he will receive his prize and then have more power to strike you a second time, perhaps. The question is whether you trust him up until that point or whether you deal with the problem right away."
"It's a waiting game Robert. Sooner or later, one gun is going to go off. I just hope that it's yours. After all, we both know that dying is not a whole lot of fun."
The room went silent whilst Robert considered everything that was said. |
