Dan Dunne (Ryan Gosling) is a history teacher at a Brooklyn school. Though well-liked by his students and colleagues, he secretly spends his evenings hopping bars and getting high. A female student named Drey (Shareeka Epps) catches him in a drug-induced haze after a basketball game, and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. As Dan struggles with his addiction, he tries to act as a mentor to the girl, whose brother is serving time for dealing drugs.





Looks interesting. There will be lots of masturbation breaks since it has Ryan gosling, but synopsis looks interesting

I think we really missed the opportunity to watch the real Half Nelson

Had to say it for old times sake

That was a really good flick. So depressing though. Good pick you guys!

The ending left me wondering about the future for the characters and I hope they turn their lives around

Wanted to give it an 8.5 so I gave it a 9

I thought this was a wrasslin' movie.

Gosling's performance saved it, thought it was fairly weak/forgettable outside of that. Don't really have too much to say about it tbh, I watched it a few days ago and already only remember bits and pieces

BUT! I thought it was pretty good. Gosling did carry it for sure, glad he got an Oscar nom for it but I can't disagree with Whitaker winning out for Last King

Everyone else was good too. Main girl was good and I've always liked watching Anthony Mackie

I feel robbed that we didn't get to see whatever convo happened between Gosling and Mackie when he invited him into his house. That could've been a good scene. I did like the yelling in the street scene tho

Went with a 7 because of Gosling

Not surprised by Goslings performance but I actually really enjoyed Shareeka Epps. Her emotions were subtle and her lines fairly minimum yet I feel like every face she made conveyed so much. I loved their dynamic.

This is 100% a character-driven piece that I feel like was on the CUSP of being extremely great. There's not really a feeling of closure. The movie feels like it ends right after it starts gaining emotional momentum. Are we supposed to be uncertain about what the future brings? Do we feel optimistic, doubtful? I can see that being the point, but it still leaves me feeling fairly empty.
