I will say I kept waiting for some shit to drop late into the movie to add some twist and make sense of some stuff but it never came. It got a lil repetitive for me and might've revealed too much too early. Once we learned that he was hypnotizing people in the first 20 minutes it sorta became rinse wash repeat without adding much new for the rest of it, so that was a bit disappointing
It was definitely foreboding tho. The one major benefit of revealing the hypnosis early was that it had me on edge for a few of the scenes that followed for the rest of the movie. I kept thinking at any minute the detective would kill his wife or kill the psychiatrist or the psychiatrist would kill him or something, so that worked pretty well. I almost wish there were more scenes with any two of those characters to keep that up more frequently
The blocking and camera movements added a ton to that sense of dread. Anytime someone walked behind someone else and the camera followed them there I expected them to walk back with a knife or some shit. It was really well shot and choreographed. Some good long takes too
The ending was..interesting. I wanna read a bit about it. Apparently we're supposed to believe that the detective now unknowingly is hypnotizing people? Idk idk
Almost gave it a 6 but went with a 7. I liked it enough
You really get a sense of the tone right from the beginning. I thought the camera work and editing were the best parts. I love all the wide-angle long takes. Very slow and HYPNOTIC*****
I'm also split on the hypnosis reveal. After we learn what the killer is doing, every scene with him in it is extremely tense. You really have no idea what's part of his process and what isn't. Holding the reveal to the end might have still worked, but it also could have made everything much more confusing. HARD TO SAY.
I love it when the detective starts suspecting he might be under hypnosis. The scene where he finds his wife is just so fucking weird. Also, the scene with the psychiatrist hallucinating is trippy.
I got pretty lost at the end of the movie. And even after reading about the ending, I still don't really know how to feel about it. Seven has such a large build-up/release where as this remains slow and consistent throughout.
ALSO went with a 7, although it NEARLY bumped itself down to a 6 by the end
AGREED about all the wide-angle takes, that was my single biggest takeaway from this. The movie definitely had a distinctive style to it which I really liked
don't have too much to say that hasn't already been said cuz I agree with just about everything that has been posted! The pacing was the weakest part and the movie somehow got less tense as it went on. SE7EN this certainly was NOT but still a p good watch overall, more for the craftmanship than anything
