Okay - it was between The Impossible and Mistress America and I couldn't decide so... I let Rotten Tomatoes decide. And by 1 percentage point, it will be .... The Impossible. I'm actually excited to watch this again as well as for others to watch it. Sorry if you've seen it already but I do think it'll be a good re-watch.

I already re-watched this the other day. It's sooo good. Do we want spoilers in here for reviews or does it matter?

WOW!

This movie really knows how to yang on your heart strings. The tsunami sequence was so well done. Holland/Watts are so violently thrusted through the water, and you really feel each hit as they collide with the different objects underneath. It's done very well and was easily the most effective part of the movie for me.

Holland and Watts are so great in this. I've never seen Holland in anything non-marvel, so this was a great surprise to see. Mcgregor is solid of course but Holland and Watts really impressed me the most. Not surprised Watts was nominated.

Apparently there was some controversy with the casting for this movie. It's based on a real family, but they're Spanish not English. I do agree that the change is a little random and was probably done for marketability, but I still enjoyed the story, regardless of who they centered around it.

7/10!

OH! I've seen this one but I should probably watch it again. I remember really loving it and wanting to cry every 10 minutes.

I know "no spoilers" is in effect but really don't read this until after you watch, lol.

I gave it a 9/10 just based on this rating scale but it is such an incredible movie. I've seen it before, a few years ago but definitely worth watching again. I agree with Jacob that the way Naomi Watts' and Tom Holland's characters (Maria and Lucas) were flung through the water, hitting object after object was so intense. I definitely had to cover my eyes at some points because it was hard to take. It was like you really felt it happening to them. Also, I had forgotten about this, but the scene where Maria starts choking and you think she's going to start throwing up blood like the patient next to her but she ends up coughing up an insanely long piece of sea weed from her lungs instead... and then right before her second surgery when she is going under (think about nice things), you see the whole sequence of what happened to her right when the tsunami first hit. Again you see her flung violently through the water but this time see the causes of the other injuries like her leg, and how she got the sea weed into her lungs, etc. The lighting in that scene with her body floating before she finally came up for air was so good.

I also love all the actors. I agree they probably cast a British family with blonde hair for marketability... but either way, they were all so good. The two younger brothers, Thomas and Simon, were just adorable, by the way. And the sequences where Lucas and Henry kept just missing each other in the medical center, the boys just missing each other, until they finally all came together. So emotional when Henry is just sobbing while he embraces his boys and people kind of look curiously as they walk by. Which brings me to the scenes where the guy with not a scratch on him and his whole family together won't let Henry use his cell phone, but the guy who has just lost his wife and kids and barely has any battery left, lets him use his cell phone not just once, but twice. Everything in this movie is so deeply affecting.

Also, the transition of Lucas's character from being a regular teenage boy with a little bit of attitude, to a little boy crying for his mother and then to a man, basically, who takes care of his mother instead of the other way around. I loved the scene where he was running around the hospital trying to find people's relatives and then he finally found the son of the Swedish (?) man and reunited them. So good.

I agree with Josh, I cried almost every ten minutes.

finally watched!

Good stuff. Tsunami scene was easily the best. That was v intense and looked great. Most brutal part was when the counter wave showed up and pushed Holland in the opposite direction, those underwater hits were BRUTAL!

I thought everyone was really good. All three leads and even the two youngest sons. Every time I'm ready to say I liked Holland the best or Watts the best or Ewan the best...I can't, they were all so even

I loved that dude who gave his cell phone over. Poor bastard, what a guy

The part where they kept missing each other was a bit hokey for me. That was the first time I felt like a scene sorta took advantage of such a shitty real life situation for the sake of trying to make a compelling movie scene, idk I can't explain it. The reunions were good though

7/10 overall

I agree the "missing eachother" was a bit hokey but I'm a sucker for the big payoff!

I forgot I voted on this but never put my thoughts because I'd already seen it.

Still a fun watch going back and watching it again. The suspense isn't there but the movie still holds the tension and such throughout. I believe I gave it a 7 once again, and I probably would have given it the same the first time through.

All of the acting was amazing imo. There wasn't anyone that did WAY better or even slightly worse than anyone else. Everyone came across as very believable without going over the edge.

Just watched this. I gave it a 7. Very solid movie and it was intense. The end when they found each other was just blah though. Would have given it an 8 I think if it wasn’t for that.

Watching this movie right before bed was a bad idea. Made it difficult to sleep.
