WATCHED IT!
So this movie hit every mark that I thought it would, good and bad.
Mendelsohn and Reynolds really complimented each other. They both have such charming/wolfish personalities that really work for a story like this.
The problem with this movie is that it didn't know where to go, so it reverted to very cliche scenes to help carry the story to the finale. You know the big loss is going to come and you know there's going to be a falling out of some sorts between the two characters before they come together for one last hooray.
I gotta admit that I was pretty bored towards the third act of the movie. The scene with Gerry and his ex-wife is solid and the scene in the hotel room after Curtis realizes that Gerry lied is even better. What isn't great is the 10-15 minute montage of the two splitting up and being miserable without each other. It just felt very cheap to me and a little pointless.
I don't know what it is but the ending fell a little flat for me. The third act montage kills the momentum of the movie, so when it gets to their big win, it feels like the movie knew it needed to wrap up and the whole thing felt rushed and unearned.
I also don't really know how I felt about the Simone/Curtis subplot. Curtis admits to being an uncommitted drifter but keeps promising Simone a life together and even tells her he loves her during their big win. We then see Curtis wake up next to another woman and then hit on the employee to the hotel. So, what was the point? What change did he go through?
I shit on it a bit BUT I really did enjoy it. The acting is great and there are a handful of scenes that were very engaging to watch.
I loved Gerry having lunch with the woman he owes money to. They make you feel like the relationship between the two is friendly but then quickly turn it on you with the way she talks to him towards the end.
The magic trick/piano scene was pretty nice too. I kept wondering what my trick would be if I ever found myself in a similar situation with a girl. "Well uhh...I can show you my top 100 movies on letterboxd?"
I gave it a 7 which is a little gracious but whatever. It reels you in very early with the charm of it's actors and holds your attention for most of the movie. That's good enough for me.

Six!
A very solid six. Maybe the most six movie ever
I thought it was good but it had the potential to be very good and just didn't reach it. It needed to hit more marks and be a little less cliche at times
Ben Mendelsohn was great. He's always great. I liked seeing this side of him, it's fairly different from a lot of his other characters but he nails it down to every tiny nuance. He was so believable. I hated him every time he pressed his luck but I still felt bad for him even when he was being a dummy
Ryan Reynolds was good too. His accent seemed to dip in and out but this character was definitely in his wheelhouse. I sorta wanted to know more about his motives though, Gerry nailed it when he said he was like a leprechaun that just showed up one day. Remember the pregnancy reveal in Monday and it made the Monday's character totally click with just a few minutes left in the movie? I wanted some of THAT!
Good music, good setting in those somewhat sad little towns
Agreed that the piano scene/wife scene/Reynolds in motel scene were the standouts. Also agreed that it started to dip towards the end and got too predictable. I did like the cut to the lobster tho, that was fun
Overall GOOD but I likely won't remember much of it down the line

My favorite small moment was when they first set off on the trip and Reynolds was asking him about the poker tell CD
"Are you gonna make me listen to this the whole way to New Orleans..?"
".........we don't have to listen to it.."
Ben Mendelsohn's delivery of that line is so pitch perfect

Mendelsohn was very good. Reynolds was good.
The story was a bit weak and inconsistent, peaks and valleys.
It felt kinda pieced together, I would put this on the director.
Directors are similar to Refs in sports games. You don’t notice them unless they’re bad. The ending was too hurried,
I wouldn’t recommend it unless you were a fan of one of the actors.

I gave it a 5. I agree with most of what was said above. It just didn't click with me and a lot of it I've already forgotten about.
I'm not a fan of movies that just kind of go back and forth on one subject (money specifically). It felt like I was just watching them gain money just to lose it later in a stupid way. And the ending was a bit lackluster. But maybe I'm still just mad at Ryan Reynolds for Buried.
I don't know if I've ever seen Mendelsohn act before but I thought he did excellent. He was so easy to dislike but not so much that you wanted him to fail. I was still happy for him in the end and that was nice. But I felt like his whole story kind of overpowered Reynold's character? We didn't really get any good backstory for him other than Simone. I would have liked some more development for him but meh. Life goes on.
It was good? This genre has never been my favorite so I knew this wouldn't be my favorite movie. BUT I'M GLAD I WATCHED IT!

Watched the first 30 minutes this morning. It's pretty blah so far. Nothing grabs me and makes me want to finish it. Doesn't interest me at all. Hoping to force myself to do that after work today.
This movie seems like it's a broke ass Smoking Aces, except it sucks. |
