Alrighty, am extremely excited to get this started! Movies is probably my biggest passion - try to watch atleast one a day, and am actually currently busy with an indepth ranking of my personal top 250 films of all-time list... it's been almost 2 years, not even close to being satisfied... so yeah, we'll see how that turns out.. Doesn't take away from the fact that I just really fucking love movies. Curtis told me about a week back, and have been extremely excited to get my poll in as I feel there are many underrated gems that I have seen that haven't gotten the love I believe it deserves. Only one of these films are wider known, the only reason I am including it is because I'd otherwise feel like a scumbag excluding it considering it's in my top 3 films of all-time atm. That obviously being Lost in Translation (and to an extent Under the Skin. As that has gained more of a cult-following since. Still pretty overlooked in general though). <3 The other 3 though have generally been overlooked!
Wanted to get a good mixture of genres, it has sci-fi, horror, coming of age, avant-garde.. to keep it a bit diverse! :)

Director: Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides)
A faded movie star and a neglected young woman form an unlikely bond after crossing paths in Tokyo. Love the soundtrack, one of the few films that utilize the beauty that is shoegaze onto film. |
|
Director: Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast)
Disguising herself as a human female, an extraterrestrial (Scarlett Johansson) drives around Scotland and tries to lure unsuspecting men into her van. |
|
Director: Gregg Araki (White Bird in a Blizzard)
It's best to go into this film blind. But, for anyone wanting a quick tiny summary, here it is: One youth (Brady Corbet) becomes obsessed with UFOs, while another (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) becomes a gay hustler in the years following a childhood trauma. It's really fucking depressing though. Great soundtrack as well (featuring Slowdive and Sigur Ros)! One of the best in my opinion! |
|
Director: Kogonada (only film so far)
When a renowned architecture scholar falls suddenly ill during a speaking tour, his son Jin finds himself stranded in Columbus, Ind., a small Midwestern city celebrated for its many significant modernist buildings. Jin strikes up a friendship with Casey, a young architecture enthusiast who works at the local library. As their intimacy develops, Jin and Casey explore both the town and their own conflicted emotions. Soundtrack made by Hammock! |
|
Director: Ana Lily Amirpour (The Bad Batch)
In the Iranian ghost-town Bad City, a place that reeks of death and loneliness, the townspeople are unaware they are being stalked by a lonesome vampire. Shot entirely in black and white, it has a very grainy and unhinged feeling about it. Great soundtrack, performances and cinematography this one understandably got a lot of hype during it's festival-premiere at Sundance a couple years ago. |

Voted Under the Skin/Mysterious Skin!
I've seen the other three. Lost in Translation is one of my favorites of all time. Columbus is one of my favorites of last year. AGWHAAN is...hard to even describe tbh, but it's got one scene that I rewatch often because I love it
Under the Skin has been on my list for awhile. Never even heard of Mysterious Skin so that's enticing to me, I didn't read the description after you said it's best to go in blind

Haven't seen any, voted for all but columbus | Rodney is a great guy. Oops, nevermind he's a terrible human being.
He likes his sandwiches to be Turkey and Swiss. Triangle cut. Let vern have his crust. Poison the part Rodney eats.

It looks like it's gonna be a tie between Mysterious Skin and Under the Skin. Both of them are so great, but so drastically different. I'll leave it up for you guys to decide, if you could just pick between one of them, which one would you choose? | 'Oh my god, it's full of stars!'

I only read the first line of mysterious skin. I think you were keeping it...mysterious? | Rodney is a great guy. Oops, nevermind he's a terrible human being.

Haha, true.
Think of it in pretentious terms:
Grim Coming-of-Age Surreal Drama (MS) vs Avant-Garde Mind Fuck Sci-Fi (UTS).

I'd say give it a few more hours and then break the tie if it's still tied up Miko

Seriously though Under the skin seems a bit more like me.
I'm also interested in this list. I need to start getting some more movies watched. | Rodney is a great guy. Oops, nevermind he's a terrible human being.
