This is a p. classic moral dilemma question. Try to actually picture yourself in this situation and answer what you would do if faced with the choice:
-------------------------------
There's a passenger liner sailing from Britain to Australia (a nice long cruise). Halfway through the journey it hits a rock and sinks. During the panic and chaos of the sinking process you regain consciousness on some remaining debris with 15 other people. A lifeboat floats up to you all, but it can only support 10 people. Since you found the lifeboat you get to decide the 9 other people who will join you.
1. Nate. A doctor. He is addicted to drugs and is very nervous. Age 60.
2. Marcus. A black Minister. Protestant. Age 27
3. Carly. A prostitute, no parents. She is an excellent nurse. Has already saved a drownign child. Age 37
4. Rory. A male criminal. Charged with murder. He is the only one capable of navigating the boat. Age 37
5. Saul. A mentally disturbed man who carries important government secrets in his head. Age 41
6. Mike. A salesman who sells automatic washing machines. Member of the local Rotary Club. Age 51
7. Brett. A crippled boy, paralyzed since birth. He can not use his hands or do anything for himself. He must be fed by others. Age 8
8. Russ. A construction worker who drinks a lot. Age 27. He is married to...
9. Amy. A housewife with two children at home. Age 23. Married to Russ.
10. Dom. A Jewish restaurant owner married with three children at home. Age 40
11. Martha. A catholic Nun. Supervisor of a girl's school. Age 46
12. Richard. An unemployed man, formally a professor of literature. He has a great sense of humor, showed courage in the last war and was in a concentration camp for three years. Age 53
13. Jimmy. A Irish married man deeply in love, no children yet. Studying to become a pharmacist. Age 24. He is married to...
14. Mary. An Irish housewife married to Jimmy. Helps with a playgroup. Age 21.
15. Matthew. An American Neo-Nazi, thus hates Dom the Jew. However, he has a large box of food which he will throw into the sea unless he goes into the lifeboat. Age 20.
FORM YOUR NINE. Discuss why | |

So the goal is for me to survive, I don't give a shit about anything else:
#1
15. Matthew. An American Neo-Nazi, thus hates Dom the Jew. However, he has a large box of food which he will throw into the sea unless he goes into the lifeboat. Age 20.
Food is a very valuable resource, must include.
#2
4. Rory. A male criminal. Charged with murder. He is the only one capable of navigating the boat. Age 37
Another must include, if nobody else can navigate you're fucked. He's not just going to kill out of the blue, he clearly wants to live and escape
#3
3. Carly. A prostitute, no parents. She is an excellent nurse. Has already saved a drownign child. Age 37
Who cares if shes a hooker. More importantly is that she is a nurse and is knowledgeable in the medical field. If some shit goes down she can help
#4
12. Richard. An unemployed man, formally a professor of literature. He has a great sense of humor, showed courage in the last war and was in a concentration camp for three years. Age 53
Seems pretty smart? And at least would be entertaining and good for moral. More importantly if he faught in a war he is strong and probably knows some shit. As long as he's not super weak.
#5
13. Jimmy. A Irish married man deeply in love, no children yet. Studying to become a pharmacist. Age 24. He is married to...
Pharmacist could be useful. Between this and the nurse we should be set. I don't really want to take the doctor becaues someone that's withdrawing is pretty hard to take care of. It's like dealing with someone with a really shitty flu that's puking and just can't do shit. Wouldn't want to waste resources on him. Plus if it's benzos/alcohol he could die from withdrawl.
#6
10. Dom. A Jewish restaurant owner married with three children at home. Age 40
It is always nice to have a chef, someone who knows how to make something to eat from the bare minimum. Assuming he at least went to culinary school. Even if he didn't, I'm sure he still knows some shit. The nazi wouldn't like him obviously but it's not like he's going to kill him, everyone's interests here align and that is to make it out alive.
#7
8. Russ. A construction worker who drinks a lot. Age 27. He is married to...
Drinks a lot makes it sound like he's not an alcoholic? Or at least just on the verge. Assuming he's not an alcoholic his strength will be useful. Could keep nazi boy in check.
The other people serve no purpose really.
I'd have them draw straws or some random form to decide the last 2 spots.
Edit:

The easiest choices are:
Mathew, Carly and Rory. You need the food, you need someone to navigate, and the nurse is better than the nervous, addict doctor.
The remaining 6 are more difficult.
I'm assuming we'd all eventually get home.
I'd take the crippled boy, he's just a child. Everyone could take shifts in caring for him, unless someone decides to be the main caregiver.
I'd take at least Amy, so that her children will not be orphans.
Probably Richard to keep up morale and for his courage and his skills.
One of the holy people, probably the nun. So I wouldn't go to hell for leaving them both to die. :P
That would leave spots for 2.
I'd hate to split up the other couple as well, but it'd be between Mary, Jimmy, Dom, and Russ.
Jimmy, is more useful with the pharmaceutical training, so I'd leave Mary behind. They have no children.
Then it's between Dom and Russ. I'd make them draw rocks. :P Or fight to the death.
If anything, the nun should be willing to give up her spot for someone else. So maybe I'd swap her out and include both of them.

I will let Nate die every time. Everyone is already nervous, we don't need him mucking everything up further.
I want to bring Marcus aboard because maybe he can calm everyone else down. Though no one else but Dom and Martha have their faith mentioned, I assume some of these others might be more willing to find comfort in Jesus talk in a situation like this.
I want to bring Carly along. Even though her death would leave no one behind that missed her, her nursing ability might be needed now that I put a boot on Nate's head. Plus she saved a kid and I saw it happen so I respect that. I don't care about her profession - maybe Marcus will have something to say, though.
I want to bring Rory along. He's a criminal, yes. He's charged with murder, yes. But if the rest of us are seriously incapable of figuring out how to man the lifeboat, he's necessary. Plus he's not been convicted... yet.
Saul can sink. The secrets can die with him and the world will go on as it would have without him. Unless his secrets lead to neutralizing a nuclear attack or something that would cost millions of lives. Then maybe I'd change my mind. Otherwise, he's definitely going to get paranoid at some point and start trouble on the boat thinking one or all of us are out to get him.
I bring Mike aboard. He's ordinary, he's older than a lot of the other people I'm going to let die, but maybe he will hook me up with a nice washing machine when we get to shore. I let Mike die and save Amy instead because he is boring and Amy has a lot of life left to live.
Brett. Oh Brett. This isn't going to make Carly or likely anyone else on board very happy, but Brett is fish food. Consider it a mercy killing.
Russ and Amy are also lost to the drink. No pun intended, Russ. I don't really know why I'd rather these two die than the other couple, but I do. I think their kids will be okay. Depending on when Amy had the kids they could still be really young too. Upon consideration, the only change I would make to my picks is saving Amy and leaving Mike behind. Amy can sell her shitty dead husband as a hero if she cares what her kids think of him. Plus she's young and can remarry and have a good life.
Dom gets a spot. I was okay orphaning two children previously (not to mention murdering Brett) but by now I'm feeling a little guilty and can't create a widow and three fatherless children on the heels of drowning Russ and Amy.
Martha would be reaching out a hand but I would turn my back and pretend I didn't see her. I appreciate the work she did in life but what's done is done and she's already choking on water by the time I see Richard.
Richard, come aboard. You're older but your sense of humor will serve us all well in these trying times. Not to mention you're not going to be easily shaken and can be a leader figure. And the whole concentration camp thing. You survived that, you deserve to live until old age.
Jimmy and Mary get up here, you crazy kids. Though they would be leaving no children behind like Russ and Amy, I just feel better about these two. Jimmy obviously loves his wife dearly and doesn't need to drown himself with alcohol every day to make it through. I want these two to have children and grow old together. Maybe they can adopt Russ and Amy's kids.
Matthew gets a spot. He's obviously a piece of shit, but potentially no worse than Rory. Of course the two most controversial picks would come attached with the two most important things. We need that food to survive. He's ignorant, but he's also twenty years old. He's young and angry, but he can still see the errors of his ways and change. He's outnumbered here, regardless. Plus I got to the end of the list with one open spot and already killed everyone else so he is saved by default.
---
My picks for ease of reading: Marcus, Carly, Rory, Mike, Amy, Dom, Richard, Jimmy + Mary, and Matthew. | |

Don't need to think about what people do or their views on people; if we leave behind people who have value but may disagree with who they are as people, we are all dying so let's give us the best chance to live. Then filled the rest with the younger crowd/those with kids at home. Sry Dom

Are you trying to shame sex workers bro? She's a nurse!!
But I based it on merit, plus the women are likely to draw 2 of the random spots since I excluded 2 men from the draw.....so | Winner of 11 Courses of Thanksgiving

Rory - I mean...kinda sounds like a must? We need a navigator. And he was only charged not convicted so maybe he didn't do shit??
Marcus - sounds like a swell guy
Amy - Sry you're gonna have to be a single mom now. No room on this boat for liabilities like Russ
Dom - Family man. Sure
Richard - This man's been through ENOUGH!
Jimmy - This guy's just starting out his life, plus he's got at least a relatively important occupation
Mary - same
Carly - sure. Would be nice to have a doctor but Nate sounds like too much of a liability so a prostitute nurse(?) is better than nothing
Brett - no way in hell I'm taking Matthew so if the food situation gets desperate...wellll | |

Spot 1: Rory - Okay, he's charged with murder, but he's the only one who can navigate. He has to be on there.
Spot 2: Carly - A nurse is invaluable, and given she has already proved herself useful, she is a must have.
Spot 3: Richard - He's been in tough situations, and his sense of humour and courage will be important to maintain morale.
Spot 4: Brett - Won't someone think of the children?!
Spot 5: Mary - She's young, and I guess she could help with Brett
Spot 6: Amy - It'd be preferable not to leave her and Russ's children orphans.
Spot 7: Marcus - May be useful for morale purposes, and he's young.
Spot 8: Jimmy - Young, plus he's probably reasonably smart
Spot 9: Matthew - If Matthew has the only source of food, then I guess he has to be let on board. But tbh, I can't guarantee he wouldn't be thrown overboard after handing it over. The last thing you need in this situation is a selfish shit who is unwilling to cooperate. Plus, when we've got Rory on board too, that could be a dangerous combination.
I dunno, if we already have some kind of food supplies I'd probably leave Matthew behind, and throw Russ or Dom in there
