A take off Curtis' ancient movie edition polls from many moons ago, let's do the same for some vidya.
Above is a list of 16 video games released in 2012, compiled from numerous "best of" lists for that year. Vote for all the ones you've played. Did you enjoy them? Hate them? Still never quite finished them? How would you rank them? Still itching to try out the ones you didn't vote for?
Some honorable mentions:
Resident Evil 6
Dragon's Dogma
Journey
Silent Hill: Downpour
Guild Wars 2
Lolllipop Chainsaw
Darksiders II

Telltale's The Walking Dead: The Game - Still one of the most emotional experiences I ever had playing a video game. Cannot recommend this enough.
Dishonored - Very fun. Unfortunately I got this game just before some bad shit happened to me so I didn't get hugely far. I should pick it up again one of these days.
Assassin's Creed III - Ugh. I was so excited for this as the timeline and story was of big interest to me. But god did they break this game. I have no idea why they ruined the otherwise perfect control scheme that the original games had. And I remember the gunplay in particular being really awful. The sad thing is that the characters and story were absolutely great, so it's a gigantic shame that I just couldn't enjoy actually playing it.
Hitman: Absolution - Only played a little bit of it. This was my first foray into the Hitman series. Thought the stealth elements were really fun, although the disguise mechanic was off and a huge source of frustration for me. Either way I must have been really terrible at this as every mission I played ended up with many angry men shooting at me.
Hotline Miami - Great, great, great. Need to pick this and that LP up again one of these days. I still listen to the M|O|O|N songs from the soundtrack on my weekend runs.
Sleeping Dogs - Really underrated gem. This was one of my first 360 games and it still stands as one of my favorites. |

Games I've played:
Farcry 3 - very fun game. Very similar to Farcry 2 but better in many ways. Less repetitive missions. I enjoyed it.
Borderlands 2 - Absolutely loved the shit out of this game. Played through it with friends with multiple characters. The bad guy Handsome Jack was funny as hell. The expansions were okay, but not as good as the main game, and not as good as the expansions from the first Borderlands.
Diablo 3 - Major letdown. I was looking forward to this game like no other and it was pretty disappointing. I did play the crap out of it for a month or 2 but lost interest quick. The late game content was uber gear dependent and the real money auction house just made the game a joke because any clown with a few hundred bucks to burn could run around with the best gear in the game.
Halo 4 - The worst Halo game to date. Another big letdown. My brother and I play through all the Halo games co-op and we used to play the fucking shit out of Halo 1 and Halo 2. Even ODST was great in a different way. Halo 3 was still good but not as good. Reach was bad, but 4 was a joke. It really takes the cake for shitty Halo games. The storyline was confusing as fuck, you never understood who you were fighting and why. Cortana was a stupid broken record, always popping in to say annoying, melodramatic crap. We just wanted to shoot her in the face through the whole game.
-------------------
Games on my list:
Assassin's Creed 3 - Sitting in my steam library, waiting to be installed someday. I absolutely loved the previous AC games, so I bought this game right when it came out. My machine at the time couldn't install the game because it sucked, so it sat for a while. By the time I upgraded my shit, I had heard all the bad reviews and uproar over how bad the game was, so I put it on the back burner. One of these rainy weekends I will take the plunge and force myself to play through it. With such low expectations, I might actually end up enjoying it a bit.
Sleeping Dogs - Another one sitting in the library waiting for it's day. I bought it on sale cause it looked cool and just haven't had time to get to it.

Walking Dead: never finished it cause I was renting it from RedBox.
ACIII: Beat the main story twice, I think. I HATED the main character. Connor just had no substance or anything likeable to him. I LOVED the new mechanics like hunting and tree climbing and Naval Battles. The story was meh to me. The ending was lame.
Far Cry 3: Loved it, never beat the main story, but I got all the way to the second island. That game was just fun to explore and hunt to get better gear. I lost my save file due to trying to get the WI-FI on my playstation to work, so all the progress was GONE and I felt discouraged to try getting back to where I was. | |

The Walking Dead - still one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had, and like KC said, certainly the most emotional involvement I've ever had in a video game. Definitely a top 3 all-time game for me
Mass Effect 3 - played like the first half hour of this, got bored. I think part of it was I had just stopped playing New Vegas (which I probably put 150+ hours in) so I was kinda burnt out on RPGs. Plus the setting honestly bored me. Probably didn't help that I didn't play the first two games either! (:
Dishonored - very fun game. I usually hate stealth games so the fact that I liked this so much says a lot. Although the way I played could only loosely be described as stealth I suppose (: There were only a few missions that didn't turn into bloodbaths for me. I think that's part of why I liked it though (and didn't get frustrated), the fact that they give you the choice of how you want to complete the level and don't penalize you either way
Assassin's Creed III - played it for a while at a friend's once, eh. Never been a huge fan of the AC games. They're fun for a little while but get stale pretty quickly | |

Kinda this. I get in and out of gaming moods and 2012 was when I got back in, but could only afford 2011 games. I've since started a few of these but not finished any | d ( i n o s r o a ) r

Get the fuck outta here with that nonsense! Well okay yes in some cases. Okay here is the breakdown on them...
AC 1 - Boring. It starts out fun but slowly gets repetitive and pointless feeling. I don't recommend.
AC 2 - Amazing. Improves on the first game in every way possible. This game was a blast. Highly recommend.
AC Brotherhood - The best AC game. Builds on AC 2 improvements and adds a few things to make it so much more fun. If you only play one AC game, play this one.
AC Revelations - Decent game, but definitely a step backwards in the fun department. Not really recommended unless you are a big fan of the series and stories.
AC 3 - As I said in my post above, I haven't played this one yet. Pretty well known for being a let down compared to the earlier games, so I wouldn't recommend this one either.
AC 4 and all the newer ones - I have no idea. I can't afford new games lol.
So there are a lot of AC games to choose from, but if you want the best AC experience, play through AC 2 and then play Brotherhood. Fuck everything else.

Telltale's The Walking Dead: The Game - I can't really say much more that already hasn't been said. Absolutely brilliant.
Mass Effect 3 - Loved it. Got into the series late, and regret never playing 1 / 2 earlier. I played them all back to back to back in 2012 and it was p. fun.
Assassin's Creed III - I was so excited for the setting, but so let down by the rest of the game.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II - My nostalgia for Medal of Honor and Call of Duty on PC has me buying every FPS that comes our from Call of Duty. Black Ops II was probably my favorite one in quite some time.
Borderlands 2 - Played it a few times but never really felt connected to it. It's at the top of my list to try and play again once Backward Compatibility becomes more prevalent on Xbox One.
Halo 4 - Purchased it, but only ever played multiplayer. Actually starting the campaign (through Master Chief Collection) this weekend ahead of the Halo 5 release. | |
