So have been reading the books for the last month. I've read A Game of Thrones entirely, and am now more than halfway A Clash of Kings.
The thing I love most about these books so far is the way the chapters are divided. Showing it from 8-9 different characters 'pov' really works.
My favorite pov-characters from the first book were:
|
1. Daenerys Targaryen
2. Jon Snow
3. Bran Stark
4. Eddard Stark
5. Tyrion Lannister
6. Catelyn Stark
7. Arya Stark
8. Sansa Stark |
My favorite pov-characters from the second book (so-far) are:
|
1. Jon Snow
2. Daenerys Targaryen
3. Arya Stark
4. Tyrion Lannister
5. Catelyn Stark
6. Theon Greyjoy
7. Bran Stark
8. Davos Seaworth
9. Sansa Stark |
I wish that G.R.R.M had decided to do more Lannister povs, because I hear that alotta stuff happens with them, but you can never really fully appreciate it unless it's shown during someone elses pov chapter.
Favorite Story-Lines so far when put from most liked to lease liked are:
1. The Wall
2. The East
3. The Seven Kingdoms
I love all 3 of the story lines and considering 8/10 total POV characters in both books combined have been involved with The Seven Kingdoms storyline. The only characters to not have been much involved in The Seven Kingdoms storyline has been Daenerys, who has been more involved in the East. And also Jon Snow who's more involved with The Wall storyline. So I don't really fear for their lives. But as you've seen in my lists above Dany and Jon are my favorite characters in both books so far. So everytime one of thrm has a chapter I'm always very excited.
Here are my thoughts on the story-lines:
|
The Seven Kingdoms: Like I said above, 8/10 total pov characters have been deeply involved with the Seven Kingdoms plot. I like it, but I can't say I get that exciting feeling like I get when Jon or Dany have a chapter, simply because TSK is used a lot. But yeah, I know it's the main focus of the story, so I definitely appreciate TSK storyline and it's always very intriguing. And always unpredictable. Which is good. Bran and Arya don't have much to do with the politics side of TSK. So I always noticed that if G.R.R.M didn't do something good with their chapters, that I quickly found it boring. But luckily I haven't had that much times. Especially with Bran having the green-dreams. And Arya being on the run. That keeps me highly interested in their characters even though they hardly have any influence on TSK plot. A few chapters ago Catelyn experienced the death of Renly Baratheon. Like, holy fuck that was unexpected. And Davos has a reason to believe it was Melisandre, with her crazy-ass 'powers'. Wouldn't know what else to call it. Tyrion is obviously the star of ACoK. He practically speaks for Joffrey, so TSK storyline always progresses the most with the Tyrion chapters. I still need to get more into Theon's character. I like it that he was the one that introduced The Iron Islands to the readers. Because I do enjoy his chapters. Has a lot to do with the fact that he's on the Iron Islands. Sansa is Sansa, can't really say much about het other that she is a suck-up that sucked up by the wrong person. I like her chapters, but I can't say I feel much for het. And it also doesn't help that she gets like 1 chapter every 200 pages. 😛 |
|
The East: I had a hard time getting into The East storyline because it was kind of out of the blue. You suddenly got a character (Daenerys Targaryen) that had little to no influence in TSK, and also knowing that The East also wasn't included in the maps in the front of the book made it even more hard to get into the story. And to think that The East is like 4/5 of the known world. Can't believe they only use one character in that area when they have so much space. But, afterawhile I grew more and more in love with her character. And she's been way high on my list since the dragons were born. I always look forward to her chapters so much. |
|
The Wall: Definitely my most favorite story-line. All the tales that we hear during the Bran/Arya/Sansa chapters on what may be beyond the wall is brung to life everytime Jon has his own chapter. They are now traveling to The Frostfangs. But what intrigues me the most about Beyond The Wall is the creatures that they mention may exist. White Walkers, Giant White Spiders, Skinny Giants and Children of the Forest, are just a few that we've heard of so far. And also the snowy terrain makes it even better. Jon has 1 chapter every 100 pages, so his chapters are always the ones I look forward to the most. |
My 3 favorite characters that don't have their own pov chapters, but actually should have, are:
|
1. Osha (who reminds me of Tara from TWD for some weird reason.)
2. Robb Stark
3. Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish. |

Why do you call it GoT instead of ASoIaF if you only read the books? (:

Finished A Clash of Kings on Sunday. Way awesome! Every POV Character had an way exciting ending:
|
Arya Stark: She just escaped Harrenhal alongside Gendry and Hot Pie, the big question remians where she's headed next. Will she travel back to Winterfell. Will she follow Jaqen's advice to travel all the way to Braavos. Will she go to Riverrun, like she's been mentioning? So much possibilities.
Bran Stark: Bran and Rickon are believed to be dead -killed by Theon Greyjoy- throughout The Seven Kingdoms. But what noone knew was that Bran and Rickon were hiding with Hodor, Osha, Jojen and Reed in the king's restplaces (don't know whatelse to call it). They found out Winterfell was destoryed by the Northsmen. That leaves Bran, Rickon, Osha, Hodor, Jojen and Reed's fate a mystery. Where will they go? Deepwood Motte, where Asha Greyjoy awaits. To another bystanding North village. Or will they be so gutsy to go down South, possibly to King's Landing? The Vale of Arryn? Or may they go North, towards The Wall. A huge question mark.
Jon Snow: Was forced to kill Qhorin Halfhand to prove to the wildlings he was willing to switch allegiance. What a huge contrast, AGoT and ACoK were so focused on showing how Jon fit in with the other men on the wall, and showing his journey with them beyond the wall. But now that Jon switched his allegiance (for as far as we know) to the wildlings. Who knows what's all in store for Jon. Where/how/if will he meet Mance Rayder. What will then happen. What's Mance Rayder's next plan? Another exciting closing character chapter.
Catelyn Stark: (I already read her continuation chapter in ASoS) Her story ended in ACoK that she was grabbing the sword from Brienne, to what looked like kill Jamie Lannister. Who was taken captive in AGoT.
Davos Seaworth: His final chapter ended very vaguely, his ships were all destoryed during the battle at Blackwater Bay. 3 of his sons are dead. Is Davos hiding nearby King's Landing. Did he sneak in, integrating into the Flea's Bottom 'society', where he once lived. Or maybe he went back with Stannis to wherever Stannis is going. So much questions as well!
Daenerys Targaryen: 2 men were following her in Qarth, Dany believed them to be 'hitmen' sended by Queen Regent AKA Lady Cersei. Later on, they revealed themselves to be sent by Magister Illyrio from Pentos, announcing plans regarding Dany's rightful place on the Iron Throne, and how she can get it back. How will it be done? How will her dragons play a role into the story. Will she finally gain the army Viserys was so desperate to recieve? Again, so much questions.
Sansa Stark: Joffrey replaced Sansa as his future wife, with Lord Renly's former wife 'Margaery'. Will Sansa make her escape that Boros promised her. Will Cersei continue using Sansa as a pin in her chess game against the Starks? Again, alot of possibilities on what could happen to her.
Tyrion Lannister: He was injured during the battle at Blackwater Bay. And now that he isn't the Hand of the King anymore, how will he still be able to influence descions. And why did one of Cersei's guards try and kill him during the battle at Blackwater Bay. Yet again, a lot of questions to be answered in ASoS.
Theon Greyjoy: The coward that he is, took over Winterfell with a tiny army. Taking advantage of Bran Stark's disability to gain power. And in the process, disrupting the North's peace. His chapter ended that he didn't want to give Winterfell up, followed by Winterfell being attacked. With Theon Greyjoy either being dead, or taken captive by someone. But who? Another question. |
All very exciting. Started ASoS on Monday. Already so exciting. Love it that Jamie Lannister has his own PoV chapters now (am loving his journey to Kings Landing together with Brienne -who is slowly becoming one of my favorite character- and Cleos Frey. Am anxious to find out how that will all work out), and that Samwell Tarly will have his own as well. Can't wait to read what will all happen next. What an exciting series!
And a qucik question to the people who read this series, but is the Wall featured in A Feast for Crows? I just checked the wikipedia for that, for some weird ass reason. And didn't see The Wall featured in the Storylines. Can anyone answer that question -without spoilers please-
Thanks. :)

Barely. Both A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons actually take place at the same time, but feature different perspectives. Dance With Dragons goes beyond the end of A Feast For Crows too.
But as a result, some of the POV stuff is split out over the two books. The wall does feature in some small capacity. |

Thanks. :-)
Just finished A Storm of Swords I: Steel and Snow.
Altogether a great read, some parts felt slow and inconsistent, espicially in the middle. Most chapters would end very exciting and fast-paced, and then end in an exciting note. And then hop over to a character that didn't have much going on at the moment, and all that excitment felt gone. So that was kind of a bummer. But the end of the book totally made up for it.
|
Bran and Jon's final chapters intertwining was awesome. Bran and Jon were so close to each other and they didn't even know it. On the one side you wanted them to reunite. But at the other side you'd know the wildlings would probably have killed Bran no matter what Jon said. So I'm kind of happy they ended up not seeing eachother. And Jon escaping the wildlings at the end was also very exciting. That entire final 2 chapters were pure gold. The setting, the location, the weather and the circumstances. It just felt so natural and I had this perfect image in my head on how it all looked. Was obviously very impressed by the ending. |
For the first half of A Storm of Swords here is my list on most favorite to least favorite characters (I love of um all btw.)
|
1. Daenerys Targaryen
2. Jon Snow
3. Arya Stark
4. Samwell Tarly
5. Davos Seaworth
6. Bran Stark
7. Jaime Lannister
8. Tyrion Lannister
9. Sansa Stark
10. Catelyn Stark
Now before you get on the hate train on why I put Sansa above Catelyn was because, although I love Catelyn, she didn't have any progression in this first half of ASoS besides her aquainting with the idea that Hoster was dying, which she was already doing for half of ACoK. So it was understandable that I wasn't very excited with the Catelyn chapters. But a good side though with Catelyn this partmof the book was that Robb had returned to Riverrun, so you got to see more of what was going on in his head. So that was good, but not good enough to out Catelyn higher in my rankings. And the reason why Sansa is higher then Catelyn is because Sansa progressed big time with a lot of elements in this book, whilst in the first 2 books her chapters were slow and tedious, her chapters here finally had some progression, that you just know that there will be some major stuff happening to her soon. Will she go back to the now destroyed Winterfell, or will she go with the Tyrell's to Highgarden, or will she go to Riverrun to go back to her mother. The wedding of Joffrey and Margarey keeps on getting closer and closer, there's been so much build up to that moment on Sansa's part. I just know something major is gonna happen to her. And I cannot wait to find out. So yeah, as you can ee Sansa had moremprogress this part of the book then Catelyn did. Also the reason why Sansa is higher.

Am gonna start A Storm of Swords II: Blood and Gold now. The first chapter is Daenerys, so that should set the tone. Am way excited! :-) | 'Oh my god, it's full of stars!'

Sansa gets better and better as the series goes on. Wouldn't be surprised if she's a top 5 character for you by the time you're done
also get ready for the best stretch of ASOIAF to date

I actually heard that A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons were the 2 worst books a ASoIaF. Or did you mean ASoSIIBaG?
But either way, what did you think of AFfC and ADwD? | 'Oh my god, it's full of stars!'

Oh and btw, that 'favorite character' list is a list of my favorite PoV characters from most favorite to least. Not all the characters in general, otherwise Hodor, Osha, Robb, Brienne and Ygriette would have been in it instead. | 'Oh my god, it's full of stars!'

Yeah I meant the second half of ASOS. That's where a lot of the series' best scenes take place
I liked AFFC well enough (in large part because of a certain character's POV), and ADWD moreso, but they definitely seem a bit slow coming off of the rollercoaster that is ASOS. And normally you'd think that'd just mean more character development, but that's not totally the case since a lot of those books (particularly AFFC) is just introducing a litany of new characters. With that said though, they're both great books still, and ADWD has possibly my two favorite chapters of the series

Okay, cool. Thanks.
Having new character PoV's always excites me. So is it true about what I heard that a lot of the first 3 book's PoV characters won't be in it? And about A Dance with Dragons being the same timeline as A Feast for Crows but then with different characters? | 'Oh my god, it's full of stars!'
