I've heard so much about this it's not even funny, but I think it's mostly about corrupt gaming journalism and how females aren't portrayed accurately in games?

And also some girl was threatened to be raped and gunned down for speaking against it?

Someone pls explain.

I thought I understood the gist and then didn't pay any more attention. Then it got bigger and I don't think I get it.

all i know is that some woman was going to speak at a college about female representation in video games, and was threatened to be killed/beat/raped etc, so she had to cancel.

All I know is some woman said something about a women in gaming contest and then 4chan decided support the contest on kickstarter and got to make a character that will be in the game they make. How that relates to the rest of the chaos, I have no idea. Every article I've tried to read talking about it is heavily taking one side or the other, and I don't even know what the sides are.

Some ugly bitch called Zoe Quinn got caught sabotaging the kickstarter and doing sexual favors for game reviewers to give her shitty game good reviews when her "boyfriend" revealed info on some message board, people got really mad about this and the SJWs went crying "MISOGYNY", and shit hit the fan. 4chan lost traffic after m00t sold them out trying to ban the discussion, people getting loldeaththreats, world turning fucking upside down, Personally I don't care much about this "games journalism" and these sites should just be avoided.

Lol urk.

So Zoe Quinn made a game called Depression Quest. Which was one of those more artistic games. It was released at the same time as Robin William's death so they decided to release it for a pay what you want platform as not to capitalize on the death. And a percentage of the money they did pay went to suicide prevention.

The game got a lot of publicity at the time (apparently) with some praising the social issues in the game while others raising questions over it's validity as a game etc. So her boyfriend randomly comes out that she was cheating on him with a gaming journalist. This was believed to be the reason the game was so well praised despite not being that good (according to hardcore gamers anyway I haven't played it I dunno). This information stands in stark contrast to the facts of the matter, such as the reviewer in question never actually reviewing the game in question! So she maybe slept with a guy who works for a review website who didn't actually review her game. Let's just let that sink in. lol.

So she starts getting death threats and harassed constantly. Other women defending them and expanding this to a feminist issue were similarly threatened.

So gamergate claims that they just want gaming journalism to be less corrupted with less bias based on money or favours recieved and from what I can tell that is essentially their stance. But they are a mostly leaderless group and are entirely unable to separate or even distinguish from the people who are harassing women and gripping to their narrow scope of what should even be defined as game ideals.

It's like that episode of south park where they are trying to stop them from changing Raiders of the Lost arc but half of them are just there to free a baby killer and those people are very vocal.

It's just a mess really and since it's an unorganized leaderless group it's not like there is even anyone to deal with it's just like yelling into the void at this point.

I got the impression that it was mostly about nepotism in "lolgamejournalism" at the beginning, before other things started muddying up the waters and I stopped paying any attention to it whatsoever.

Both sides that were "deep in the digital trenches" standing defiantly opposed to the other seemed to be quite insufferable and seemed to have reached the point where they had their golden narrative, that was what was happening, and nothing else could possibly be true.

But I did stop paying attention to it around the time that british Youtube game dude everyone loves got involved or made a statement or whatever the fuck he did.

I think the problem is that both sides are sort of arguing about different things. So it's hard to come to any sort of consensus when both sides have different perceptions as to what the argument is even about.

Yeah it is a fucking mess, It would be funny if Gamergate ended up like Occupy Wall Street and collapse from within. I've seen crazy shit like GG saying "Gamergate has become a culture!" and Anti-GG saying "Gamergate is ISIS", it has become fucking retarded by this point. At least they managed to pull some sponsors from supporting some of these shitty gaming news sites. It's funny how these people take death threats way too fucking seriously, seriously I get fucking death threats when I play online games.

I think the death threats in question were more of the this is where you live and we know it or the whole gunning down everyone in the public place we know you will be at type of deal.

A little different than the banter you'd get playing COD.

I mean I personally might not take it too seriously but I can't speak for someone who has been getting a lot of death threats towards me personally and I don't really know how I'd react to that myself.

Yeah, but these people who get death threats like these don't do the right thing, instead of calling the cops and keeping their mouths closed like the cops recommend to do, they go "I'VE RECEIVED A DEATH THREAT FEEL SORRY FOR ME" on the internet, which gives me the feeling that it's fake.

Most of the death threats are trolls who think it's funny that they're causing such chaos.

There were apparently some big leaks today. The CEO of Gawker (the shithole """"news"""" network that owns sites like Kotaku and Jezebel) posted on his personal Facebook that he was happy to see that the money he spent paying people to "causing a disruption" was paying off. What it amounts to is that he was paying people to anonymously shitpost on 4chan to derail threads and/or send threats to people on his "side" to appear the victim.

People still don't know what to make of it yet.

I am not surprised... Looks like Gawker is dead for good.
