Anyone else get really into the Olympics? I personally prefer the Winter Games, so I am very much looking forward to next month. Normally, a time difference like this would not be great, but I'll be able to tailor my schedule around the live events (mostly airing between Midnight and 1pm Eastern every day)

I LOVE THE WINTER OLYMPICS BECAUSE CANADA DOESN'T SUCK | "So, uh, what are we saying here? If we save LA from a nuclear bomb, then you and I can get together for dinner and a movie?"

I personally prefer the summer olympics, that's when all the attractive people participate.

I've never seen even a minute of any Olympic event. My friends are always raving about it though. Maybe I'll check it out

I watch all of the snowboarding and skiing (freestyle, slopestyle and half-pipe) Sometimes watch skeleton or luge because I can't imagine and the crashes are usually pretty cringe worthy. The other stuff I may have on tv but not paying as much attention. | A lesson without pain is meaningless. That's because no one can gain without sacrificing something. But by enduring that pain and overcoming it, he shall obtain a powerful, unmatched heart. A fullmetal heart. |

Not that I'm a winter olympics historian, but from everything I've read this seems like one of the absolute worst choices of location for the winter olympics.

What have you read? I haven't really paid much attention but did hear of the bombings that were going on last month. That can't be good. | A lesson without pain is meaningless. The bombing stuff coupled with it being a subtropical climate. The curious amount of money that has been going into it, raising suspicions of something else going on there. I do appreciate the blankets they came up with to preserve old snow or whatever.
Seems like there were a few other things that are escaping me, but most of what I read was on reddit so it's probably best to not take most of what they said as gospel.

I was never a fan of the location. I understand, and it works, that all of the indoor events are in the town of Sochi where it is a subtropical beach town and all of the outdoor events are 35-45 minutes away in the mountains. It works, but it shouldn't be hosted by the ONE subtropical (or not really winter-y) place in Russia.
The corruption is a whole different problem. This is the most expensive Olympics to date at around $51 Billion. Putin had the Russian committee hire a bunch of friends and favorites for more expensive contracts. A lot of projects were being built at 2-5 times as expensive as some European contractors were pricing the projects at. A number of contractors who did not get work say part of the contract was that 10-20% of the money you make (from the IOC) would have to be given to the Russian Committee and politicians.
The roadway and railway built to make travel from the city to the mountains easier cost more than the entire Vancouver Olympics.
