AWWWW SHIIIIIIT. Here we go again
Again, I thought about not attempting the challenge this year because Ive been in a tv show and video game mood this year way more than a movie mood so far....but we shall see. Ill give it a shot and if I fail I fail. I might make the deadline end of the year instead of Halloween, I would likely need that extension
Also, I'm flying solo this year. SugarBoogerz is busy and is gonna sit this one out so this thread will just be me talking to myself unless anyone feels like making an attempt as well. Don't be shy!
The silver lining to Jacob dropping is that it frees me up for choosing movies. Him and I have picked the same lists for the past three years which reallyyyy limits us since the two of us have a lot of horror movies covered. But now I can watch some classics that I was never able to slap on our lists since he had already seen them. My list this year is much better and more recognizable than the previous couple as a result. Should be good and till be nice to finally watch some of these classics
It's gonna work exactly the same. I found this chart on reddit. It shows 39 different horror sub-genres and a couple examples from each one (the person said they did a lot of recent examples instead of the best possible pick at times)
Also don't start nitpicking the subgenres that I put some movies under pls, I went by what little I know about some of these movies and I don't wanna be spoiled on what exactly the horror element is unless the description says it. Also don't say so and so sucks because it'll make me not wanna watch it at all, pls and ty

I'm SEVEN movies down already! Cruising
My thoughts on each one are gonna be more brief this year I think. Idk why, just cause. Also I'm gonna do the same thing I did last year for the subgenre competition. Favorite movie gets 3 points, then 2, then 1. Worst movie gets nothing. I'm sure some of my previous rankings will change so I'm not even gonna look at the older rankings

Starting off with an ARGENTO! I think he's been on a list all four years? Not sure
It was...you know..an Argento! Exactly what I've come to expect from him - some super violent kills, a murder mystery, a batshit crazy killer, etc. Same old stuff but still fun

Is there a worse subgenre than small creature? Probably not! TBD if the small creature four year average is the worst of all 39. I think it'll be a competitor
Anyway this was bad as expected. I watched Crystal Plumage just before I officially started the list, so I decided to make Puppet Master my first official movie because I like getting a likely-bad one out of the way earlier. I believe this one had the worst Letterboxd average out of all of them so I crossed it off quick
Some of the puppets were fun...I guess. Leech woman was by far the best one and was legitimately gross so that was cool. The effects were okay, sometimes they looked acceptable when they moved around. Could've had way better deaths though. But the characters were mostly assholes so I liked watching them die at least
The main character lol. What a shlocky protagonist
There were SO many sequences of just...nothing. Just to fill time. There was one part where iirc you watch two characters walk down some stairs in silence for like 45 straight seconds. The time fillers were so noticeable that they were almost funny
I cannot believe they made FOURTEEN of these movies. And half of them are Nazi themed??? lol what is this series. Gotta respect it!

Not bad! Kinda fun. Kinda dumb!
Steven Yeun is great as always. Samara Weaving is fun. The tone is pretty fun overall. A few good violent bits here and there. Almost wish they went hardcover over the top with it though tbh, didn't quite hit that note for me
Loved the part where Yeun collects the mace in his mouth and spits it back in that guy's eyes, great shit. More of that!
Enjoyed the simple laid out premise. Defeat the mini boss on each floor to get to the main boss
The writing was eh, they did the classic repeat a line from earlier to give it more weight move so many times. They did it four times in one scene and it was just annoying, they prob thought it was so cool
A fun enough easy watch

FIIIIINALLY watched Child's Play. This is one I've put off because I've known everything that happens, seen all the classic scenes before, hated the direction the series goes in, etc. I had no real interest and assumed it would be whatever
Boy was I wrong! Dare I say it kinda.......slapped...? I dug it way more than I thought I would. The battery scene was perfect, love shit like that. Dourif was of course great and it's a real shame the tail end of the series couldn't deliver for him, he deserved better! Tho he probably had fun with the over the top shit as it went on, idk. It's so weird how every single 80's slasher series devolved into such disasters as they hit the mid 90's. Why do they ALL go to space!!!
Anyway I really liked this. Chucky was perfect, I loved the battery moment when Dourif takes over and the face changes and he attacks the mom. And the facial expressions and movements were impressive for the time. Move over Puppet Master! There's one shot of the burnt, molten Chucky stalking Andy down a hallway that's creepy as SHIT, I loved it. Def my favorite shot of the movie
Some good kills too. The poor babysitter's death was brutal when she hits the car. That's when it really grabbed my attention
I would give the second one a shot sometime and probably stop there. Unless I'm ever in the mood for some goofy campy shit...then maybe I'd continue, why not

This was one that I was excited for when I saw the trailer but then lost interest after meh reviews. Much like Child's Play, I should've just pulled the trigger and ignored all instincts because I dug this
It's weird, that's for sure. Not really sure how to even describe it. I can certainly see why it has a pretty low avg LB rating but I enjoyed it for what it was
The reveal of what she was doing in the bathroom got me, didn't see THAT coming! The ending was abrupt and I would've liked finality between the two but I also like the idea that they'd continue that dance yet again and the upper hand would change again and again. Pretty fun
Loved the scene when he was rehearsing the murder and they added the sound effects
Both leads were really good. Christopher Abbott is really gonna blow up some year soon, he consistently delivers

But 2021 in second is no surprise either since I'm UNTETHERED to Jacob this year and can catch classics now that he's already watched

Not bad! But not great. Could've been a lot better. Gave me Berberian Sound Studio vibes (from my list two years ago)
I liked the vibe. Fun subject matter. Cool poster. Semi forgettable ending unfortunately. I watched it two weeks ago and don't have much to say!
