In my ever continuing journey to become a legitimate member of society, I decided to take the next logical step and become a home-owner. I've been renting for about 6 years now and it really sucks. I absolutely abhor putting money into a landlord's pocket and liken it to fuedalism.
So I'm very excited, but also terrified. There's so much that can still go wrong, I'm only at the very start of the process. I haven't even had the mortgage approved yet, although I suspect it will be as they've already booked a valuation on the home and I don't think they'd go that far if my affordability/credit checks hadn't gone through.
That said it's kind of an old house and definitely needs some work. They might value it as less than it was sold for and I have to go back with a counter-offer, or they might just flat out reject it altogether (not likely). There's then the case of what a survey might throw up (e.g. could be stuffed with asbestos) which will also potentially be expensive :(
Still it's a good first step onto the ladder. I really hope it comes through. Finding a house in the current market/situation has been a nightmare. Everybody has been improving their home during lockdown and waiting for vaccinations before selling/buying. Plus the government is pushing low deposit mortgages, and there are tax breaks still in play etc. etc.
The result is the market is artificially booming and is currently a seller's market. Houses which 2 years ago weren't worth shit are now selling for nearly quarter of a million. It's all gotten a bit silly.
In many cases we were something like the 10th people to view a house a day after it went on market, and it was sold a day or two later (often for much, much higher than the asking price).
So I don't mind having a house which needs a bit of decorating and modernising. It's a bit of a project. Will have to wait and see if it all comes through now.

Grats. I too feel your pain on buying a house right now. Everything is so over inflated and people buying shit so quickly. It’s been a bitch for us. But we sold out house in a couple days so at least that was super easy |

Managed to not be in a chain, so the house is vacant. The owner passed away and his son is selling so at least we're covered on that side.
The selling part definitely seems like a breeze. But I've heard cases where you can't even view properties to buy if you haven't already sold, which is nuts.

I'm also renting. Been living second hand or together with friends a bit, but been sitting on a first hand contract for a while now.
I have been thinking about buying a house/apartment at some point soon, but since I'm currently single it probably won't happen right now at least. They changed some laws here recently to make it easier for families to find a place to live, and harder for people buying it on their own.
Soon perhaps! | |

My parents are SELLING the house! I don't live there anymore but it's incredibly sad seeing a for sale sign in front of it. Looks like these are our final few weeks with it
Do you wanna buy it paul | |

I'm doing the exact opposite. Mom and I are going to be renting an apartment for about 2 years, moving away from the house. Good news is that the apartment is closer to town and where I work so we're closer to basically everything

Congrats. The market is definitely stupid crazy right now. Wish we'd waited a year to sell ours, but if we'd done that there is no way we could afford the house we are in now.

It's not outside the realms of possibility. He was in his 90s, with dementia in the middle of a pandemic. I didn't really ask tbh.

It's a bit far, not that distance has any meaning anymore!
Maybe I can live in it virtually? Actually live behind a dumpster but dial into the house via ZOOM
