I wasn't one of those people that hated The Last Jedi, but this felt like how you subvert expectations without pissing people off. 10 minutes in and I realized I had no idea what was going to happen, but every movie in the series was still relevant. That made things feel little bloated, but I also didn't rewatch anything except Infinity War, so maybe that's on me. Other than that, no big issues, probably would give it 8/10.
My biggest nitpicks were:
- Why is Cap worthy of holding the hammer all of a sudden?
- The Gauntlet felt like it turned into a genie's lamp by the end
- Thanos seemed just about as powerful without the stones vs. with them |

What's with all the Infinity War hate????? It's got a lot of characters in it no doubt, but it had to, and they were never gonna get a ton of development because of that. The most important part of setting up Thanos as an actual character is done excellently imo. I'm just not sure I could envision a better version of that than what we got, it's flaws were pretty much impossible to not have with what they were going for.
Saw this a second time, felt like it got better. A much bigger audience this time too, the applause at the big moments gave me chills.

7/10 overall. Almost a six but prob a seven. They pretty much fixed everything that sucked about Infinity War. The focus on the characters here was farrrr better. Humor was better, action was...only a little better. But they really did a good job of servicing most major characters in this one
Thor was the standout but the two leads were good too. Antman and Hawkeye were also great, they've done a really good job with Hawkeye's character since the first Avengers where he was just the bow and arrow guy. Nebula still blows, I hated how much time she got. I wish Drax had fun stuff at the end :( . That's my boi
Tony's death....whatev. I liked his I am Ironman line coming back but the actual death itself was anticlimactic for the face of the MCU. He deserved better tbh. The scene itself wasn't terribly sad, it was just sad to see RDJ go. And Captain America's choice was terrible, in retrospect it feels so out of character and awful. There's just no way he ditches his duty and remains in the past. Also it makes 0 sense with the time travel rules they set up. I thought him giving it to Sam over Bucky was weird too but I like Sam and Bucky blows so I'm good with it. I just wish he died with Tony instead of the time travel stuff tbh. The two of them should've had this grand battlefield sacrifice to take down Thanos together. Working together finally after their Civil War arc. That would've been a perfect ending
Black Widow. lol. Who cares. I was saying to myself the whole movie that she's overall so...inconsequential in the MCU and never has anything fun to do. The people around me were sobbing during that scene. Crazy
Thor and the Guardians is a SUPER exciting idea. I can't wait for that. Almost wish Waititi WAS taking over Guardians 3 now since he did such a good job with Thor in Ragnarok. But those are Gunn's babies and he'll obviously do great with them. Can't wait for that movie now. And KORG came back!!! God I hope he's in the new Guardians. Korg and Drax scenes? I need em
The heroes showing up was a great moment and it was done really well. The battle afterwards....eh! It was hard to tell what was even going on but I was also sitting in the bottom right in an Imax theater. But I do wish they spent more time on it and had better individual moments with more heroes during the fight. And more random combos of heroes helping each other out
They FINALLY avoided the most annoying thing about the MCU - their need to shoehorn in as many hero on hero battles as they possibly can. Woah, Thor vs The Hulk! The Guardians vs Ironman! Vision vs Hawkeye!! It's so annoying. They did do Captain America vs Captain America and Hawkeye vs Black Widow for a split second but that's forgivable. In previous movies they literally cannot help themselves and those scenes are never interesting at all and there's 0 stakes, it's just playfully blasting each other with lasers into piles of rubble, it's awful
Captain Marvel's scenes here made me 10x less interested in seeing Captain Marvel. She was devoid of everything that makes a person interesting
Captain grabbing the hammer was a highlight moment

Best Avengers movie by a mile and the Russo bros' first good one really |

I kind of agree with Iron Man, some last words would've been nice, maybe a moment with Cap, but I also get why they didn't drag it out and that "I am Iron Man" line works well enough as his last words .
Got disagree with the Cap thing though, at the end of the day, his job was done. The biggest threat (so far) in Thanos was dead, the stones are gone, there's nothing that seems like it could end the world to stop. There's also a crapton of heroes to carry the torch from him, two of his best friends in Tony and Nat are dead, he knows he can pass on the Captain America mantle to Sam. Two things seemed to torment him most: not saving Bucky and not reuniting with Peggy. He did one, so it made sense for him to go and do the other once it was possible and he knew he could leave the world in good hands.
Black Widow's death was surprising, but yeah, bye lol. I guess they're giving her a solo movie as a proper sendoff, even though it's gonna be a flashback, maybe Hawkeye will be telling her story to his kids or something lol, or trying to find out more about her past after she dies.
I'm gonna reserve judgment on Captain Marvel since she was in surprisingly so little of this, but I'm nervous. Her character seems to be "She's cocky" and that's it, her second movie's got to give her something to be working for.
"The Russo Bros' first really good one" You didn't like Winter Solider????? I'll give you Civil War though, the no consequence fighting is kind of boring in hindsight. |
