Sad to see that this topic didn't get more posts. I think most people know I love horror movies as well. Every October I try to fill the month with movies I haven't seen yet but my list of personal favorites would just read like a broken record of all the typical classics everybody loves. Right now my dorm room is adorned with my horror movie posters for the month of October: The Thing, Trick 'r Treat, Shaun of the Dead, The Exorcist, An American Werewolf in London.

Trick 'r Treat was so good

Definitely, it's a tradition that I have to watch it every year. And I just so happened to have watched it every since it came out. It's a crime that it was released straight to DVD.

I saw The Cabin in the Woods and Evil Dead last week and thought both were awful..

I have seriously mixed feelings about The Cabin in the Woods. I like how ridiculous and over the top it gets in its final moments, but in the end I don't think it works that well as a parody/satire. With another satiric film like Scream or Tucker & Dale, even if you (somehow) don't get the cliches they're referencing, you can still enjoy the story on some basic level. But Cabin in the Woods is satire first, with everything else coming in second. They practically shove it in your face. And if you like that, that's totally fine, but it was a bit too much for me.

I actually really enjoyed the Evil Dead remake because it gave the original source material a badass makeover. And the two-second after the credits scene was a nice treat. It's one of the best horror remakes I can think of in recent years. That's not exactly high praise, but what else even comes close to it?

You need to get on that. Almost all the Scream movie are endlessly rewatchable for me, even if the endings make you go "...really?" Okay the third one isn't very good but I'd probably still watch it.

If the first one wasn't so drenched in 90s nostalgia I don't think I'd love it as much. I always smirk when the police ask Billy why he has a cellular phone.

Scream 2 is the only one to have a left-handed killer.

Lefties rule.

But yeah that set looks nice. I wouldn't mind owning it myself. I remember watching all the documentaries on youtube (I don't know if they're still up) so I can vouch for some pretty good bonus features. I'm positive David Arquette was high as a kite when they interviewed him.

Alright, since I rarely watch these I figure you are the people to ask...what would you recommend for beginners? (aka the 12 y/o is asking to watch scary movies :P )

I'll try and make a list of more accessible movies that span different subgenres and mix in classics with more contemporary choices.
-A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
-The Thing (1982)
-Dawn of the Dead '04
-Ginger Snaps
-The Sixth Sense
-The Descent
-The Shining

I liked REC a lot. I've pretty much given up all hope of new horror movies being frightening but REC was pretty intense in the last act and that's one hell of an accomplishment for me. REC 2 wasn't bad either, but I think I'll stop there.

Oh yeah, I forgot that was discussed earlier on. I dug that movie, possibly even moreso than House of the Devil. I just think it would be awesome to work in a haunted motel like the characters.

I just assumed "12 year old" meant "new the the genre." I don't actually think a 12 year old should watch The Descent.

But I did watch Halloween, The Shining, Scream 2, and a few others before age 10.

AMC's Fear Fest is over and now I'm sad.

To make up for the post-seasonal depression they are giving us a Steven Seagal week next week.

Hooray...

Is it normal to continue watching horror movies into November? I just can't switch off like that and usually go for another week or so.
