2/10
I did not like this at all. Every song sounded like it belonged in a sad montage on Grey's Anatomy.
This was one of those albums for me where you hear the first track and you feel you've heard them all. Everything felt like it was the same tempo. The melodies were boring and uninspired. This guy seems to be more interested in his lyrics than the music.
Every track seemed to use the same droning strings and harmonised background vocals, and there didn't seem to be much variation in what they were doing between songs.
There was ONE track that stood out to me. It would be a stretch to say I liked it, but it had something. That was Tiger Striped Sky. It was a relief to hear something quite upbeat after the first 5 songs which were slow and gloomy. The Drop D tuning helped make things a bit more interesting too.
But nothing here surprised me. I didn't hear anything I haven't heard before. Also, I have a special dislike for that vocal sound, which I can only describe as the 'indie vocal sound' which I've heard from loads of artists. I feel like I've heard this singer before even though I've never listened to him til now.

I don't regret listening to it though. I pick up something even from the stuff I don't enjoy. | |
