Finally finished installing this tonight, sat down to play it for a bit. I turned the lights off and put on my headphones
5 mins in...
:wikey: This was a mistake
This game is actually pretty scary! And going in not knowing a damn thing meant I was even wary of the first crazed person I ran into. I honestly thought the first level would involve dodging a few lunatics and taking the elevator to safety. So I was pretty pissed when I learnt I had to take on Big Daddy, after fighting my way through god knows how many floors.
I died about 10 times during the first level, most of those deaths occurring during the Big Daddy fight (didn't help I ran out of ammo and found myself beating him with a wrench).
Excellent start though. I like that instead of playing a lame tutorial, you are thrown straight in at the deep end and forced to work everything out as you go, with your vocal guide the only source of help. That really added to the immersion. I felt as scared and confused as the main character.
One of my fav moments so far: When you are sneaking around the morgue area and all the lights go out, followed by a creepy noise up ahead. Then you investigate and it turns out nobody is there.
Also, yeah, I like the way he just injects that shit into his arm, lol. I thought I'd died when that first happened.
Perhaps my only complaint is that the seemingly infinite respawns detract from the tension a bit. Like, when fighting Big Daddy, it was tense as fuck, but after the first few deaths it was just a matter of hammering away at him. Didn't help that no matter how many times I died, the damage I did to enemies remained.
Is that specific to the first level?
In case anybody is wondering, I spared both little girls and took less ADAM. I fully intend to spare any I encounter, but we shall see how long that lasts!
Also, just started Neptune's Bounty. Just when I thought I'd found safety, that fucker won't let me in.
What a cunt!
Overall: If the intro is anything to go by, it's a great game. Getting Fallout and STALKER vibes from it. Love the setting and the concept, very unique. |

I've become very grateful for the infinite respawns after playing some more. It'd drive me crazy if I had to keep fighting Big Daddy's from scratch! I've died at least once fighting every single one so far lol.
Ammo is a bitch to conserve. You know you are getting desperate when you are resorting to throwing frozen fish at security bots (:
So I've started using my powers more. Telekinesis is probs my fav so far.
I accidentally harvested one of the Little Sisters. H and L are so close together, and it's hard to see in the dark. I hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the ass.
Nvm
Oh, and I'm starting to love Andrew Ryan. The magnificent bastard is always one step ahead. |

Btw, I take back what I said about infinite lives killing the tension. I still crap myself every time I hear a Big Daddy approaching. Twice on the Arcadia level, I had to hide from them due to lack of ammo/health.
On one occasion, I was hiding and the little sister saw me as she turned the corner. That was a real 'oh fuck' moment. |

I suck at this game!
I just finished Farmer's Market. I couldn't figure out how to seal the entrances so I ended up in a big fight with a bunch of splicers and a Big Daddy...and no ammo.
Speaking of Big Daddy's, they are now turning up without the Little Sisters all of a sudden. That's interesting, and annoying! I hypnotized one tho, which was cool.
Question about Big Daddy's in general: Do they attack you on sight, or do they only do that if they are escorting Little Sisters?
Anyhow, just started Fort Frolic. Looks like the coolest location so far. I like the crazy guy on the intercom. The spotlight following you is a nice touch.
Given how slowly I'm progressing, don't bother waiting for me to catch up Curt |

So I've been picking fights with these lonely schmucks for no damn reason?
God damn it!
You say they never attack first, but in Farmer's Market I was spotted by a Big Daddy/Little Sister and the Big Daddy charged at me immediately. To which I opened fire. Is that how they warn you?
I'm gonna try walking up to one to test this out. |

So a Big Daddy was walking towards me in a hallway, and I decided to stay put and see what would happen.
It walked straight past me. Didn't even register my presence!
I like that they aren't simply crazy monsters that attack on sight. This gives them a lot of depth, and actually in a strange way makes them scarier.
This was a peaceful moment, but it was ruined when a splicer appeared out of nowhere and sucker punched me. The fucker triggered my electrical defense, which in turn hit the Big Daddy, who got pissed and killed me. Asshole splicers.

- Best level so far, no contest. Cohen was a very fun enemy, and fighting all those splicers off to classical music was a highlight.
- I didn't let him finish his end speech; I thought it would be funny to try and gun him down mid sentence. It didn't work.
- Those sudden flashes of family portraits and ghosts spook me every time.
- That tape of the pregnant lady and the flashback of her getting shot was grim. |
I'm starting to get the hang of the balance between plasmids/guns now. I do my best to use wrench and plasmids only on splicers, and save my weps for Big Daddy's | |

I just Laughed my ass off at Tennebams girls refusing to go near me and telling me how mean I am for harvesting them all. Oh man. The look on their faces had me laughing. I look forward to harvesting all of those little cunty bitches. Also, it was a really good twist but one I saw coming. I am thoroughly enjoying this game. Can’t believe I waited so long to play it. |

FU Ahoda, those girls led me to safety. How did that level end for you? I wonder how much of a difference harvesting vs saving makes on the end game.
The 'Would you kindly' reveal was great. I really like that the only other good guy in the game turned out to be evil, after guiding you all that way.
I reckon i'm getting close to the end game now, just entered the sewers. |

Fontaine fight: Surprisingly easy, didn't die once.
The hardest moment of the last level was two stubborn splicers that refused to die. I lost three little sisters as they were escorting me too. Oh, and the angry Big Daddy gave me pause.
Just checked out the alternate endings on youtube. Yup, I got the good one. They all lived happily ever after! Luckily that one little girl I accidentally harvested didn't come back to bite me on the ass.
I have no sympathy for you Ahoda! When is killing little girls ever the correct decision? Justice has been served.
All in all, a very good game, I can see why it's considered a classic. |

Also, I seem to have completely missed Cohen's dungeon. Which level was that on Ahoda? |

Insect swarm sucks! Telekenesis is a must have at all times imo Dyl. There's loads of props to pick up and throw at splicers with that power.
