Just finished this last night. Really enjoyed it!
|
It was strong from start to finish, but the middle episodes were the high point for me, when there was enough mystery for it still to be creepy, and there had been nothing more than brief glimpses of the monster.
It's brilliantly shot, the music is great, and the characters are fun and interesting. And there's something about the tone that I really dig. It reminds me a little of The X Files.
I do agree with Igor that it is ridiculously predictable at times, but it doesn't detract from the show imo. In fact, I quite liked how they turned some typical tropes on their head. For example, it seemed painfully obvious that Nancy and Jonathan were going to become an item, but they subverted that cliché by having Nancy and Steve reconciled at the end. I thought that last shot of her and Steve in the finale tied in well with the argument between Nancy and Jonathan a few episodes previously about their parents ending up with people they never wanted to be with. Oh, and speaking of Steve, it was nice to see him fleshed out as a character when they could so easily have made him a one dimensional douchebag.
I also think this show gets away with some very cheesy moments that few other shows would! For some reason, it just works.
One thing I am disappointed about is learning that Season 2 is going to be the same cast. I was actually told that it was going to be an anthology type series with an entirely fresh setup next year, so I watched the finale thinking that this was the definitive ending to this particular story. And well...that's exactly what it felt like. I couldn't have asked them to conclude it any better, and I don't think this is a story that needs revisiting. I liked that so much was left open to interpretation, and I loved the ambivalent nature of the ending with Will slipping back into the Upside Down and Hopper getting the car with those shady suits.
Perhaps they intend to tell a completely new story next year and simply use the same cast? |

lol, I've just realized that Winona Ryder played Joyce...I thought she was the one playing Mike & Nancy's mum.
I knew the name Winona Ryder before I watched this show, but I had no idea what she looks like. So I assumed that the one and only cast member I did recognize must be her! Turns out that the actress I recognized is Cara Buono. I just found out she played a brief part in Mad Men. I thought she looked familiar!
And to think, I kept questioning throughout the show why they gave a big name such a small and insignificant part...I was so confused why she was getting so much praise for her role! (:
Silly me. | |

This season started off real slow, but if episode 5 is anything to go by, all the setup was worth it. So much happened in episode 5...easily the standout of the season so far.
I thought using the same cast would be a mistake. I was wrong...there's plenty left to explore here. The new additions are good. I really like how they breathe life into every character. In most shows, a character like Joyce's new boyfriend would be left on the sidelines. But he has had a pretty prominent role and they made him relatable.
If the rest of the season matches Ep 5, it's gonna be on par with S1 |

Ehh I didn't much care for this ep. It took the whole 'omg look guys it's the 80s' shtick too far
An Eleven only episode wasn't a bad idea, but the side characters sucked. |

They killed Bob. You bastards!
I knew it was coming, because someone spoiled it for me, but it still sucked.
Episode of the season? Dunno, haven't seen the finale yet. |

Fucking great finale, nuff said.
I liked that the douchey brother came into play right at the end, it was a good pay off after all that build up.
Dart's death might be the most tragic of the show. Right next to his empty sweet wrapper!
Anyway, thought this season was great. Steve was the standout character for me. Fast became my fav. Though I thought Jonathan was a bit lame this time around.
But yah, good show. |

There's a brief shot of Dart dead with a sweet wrapper next to him :( |
