I think if it were other showrunners I'd be more optimistic, these guys added rape to make GOT darker. I don't think they're capable of the sensitivity this needs. | nav is ugly and i am pretty |

And Merc, a real problem is the fact that this series could easily be seen as making entertainment off of the pain of black people. And the timing of this is sketch too. Look at the political climate, recent events. It's scary to think how this might be marketed. | nav is ugly and i am pretty |

How are any historical movies/shows different? |
This is revisionist history, it's an epic drama on HBO. Compared to movies like 12 Years A Slave, if this is more like Game of Thrones than Roots it'd be a fucking shitshow. Can you imagine the outrage if this show has likable slaveowners? | nav is ugly and i am pretty |

OKAY, to put this in context. This is a show about what slavery would look like today. When we're already struggling with the rise of the alt-right, police brutality, etc. It's understandable why people are cautious about this, so much of it could go south. | nav is ugly and i am pretty |

Also Merc are you saying that a slave in Bangladesh should write a script about the American Confederacy? lol that's how I interpreted your post. |
No I was trying to point out how stupid it is to think that it's not "chill" for a white person to write about slavery because they might have ancestors who died a 100 years ago who were slavers.
Why does the fact that they are white matter? There are a lot of black people who have the same ancestors? There are people who immigrated to the US that have/had slaves? |
First of all, why are you calling me stupid?
Secondly, black people in America are still very much still experiencing the after effects of slavery and are not treated entirely like first class citizens. I don't see a show written by white men or from ancestors of slavers to be writing this dystopia. Tbh I wouldn't expect you to fully understand this not growing up here or learning about Reconstruction and all of that growing up in school, but it's just not chill in a society that has not moved on from slavery yet. We don't need to give another voice to the white man like this.
The fact that they are white matters a lot. If there was a black co-writer, and not these GoT dudes, I'd maybe look at this a bit differently, but it's still a really terrible idea. |
I'm not saying you're stupid, I'm saying you wrote something stupid, there's a huge difference.
Wise people rarely say stupid stuff, smart people do all the time.
America needs to move on and this line of thinking is the opposite, despite what your teachers told you to think. |
Merc, we are not in a post-racial society. And within that context, slavery is still relevant to the black experience. Racism is still very much alive so YES, people are concerned about it being treated sensitively and not as entertainment.
We're not trying to move past it because racism is still a big part of their truth and until they are ACTUALLY treated equal it's going to continue being an issue. | nav is ugly and i am pretty |
