Gamergate is a community revolt against Gawker media and other like minded SJW "gaming journalism" sites who have used accusations of racism and misogyny as a shield against criticisms against them.
It began when some assclown named Eron went full beta and posted a sort of "confession" about the emotional abuses he had allegedly sustained from being in a relationship with Zoe Quinn, the developer of a "game" called Depression Quest. The only important thing to be taken from this confession however was that she had allegedly slept with people in the gaming industry. More importantly, people who had reviewed her work without disclosing their relationship and judges who had given her game awards.
This prompted an investigation from members of 4chan into the twitter accounts of prominent game "journalists" from sites like Kotaku, Polygon, etc. What they found was that developers and "journalists" had very intimate relationships that they didn't disclose.
When gamers became upset about all this boolshit, Gawker and other affiliated sites hit back with hit pieces like this: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/224400/Gamers_dont_have_to_be_your_audience_Gamers_are_over.php
They essentially declared gamers dead in 11 different articles released within a few days of each other. It was later revealed that many of these "journalists" were part of a mailing list called "Gamejournopros" and they coordinated with each other on stuff like this.
You don't see positive press about gamergate, because journalists thought they had more to gain by jerking each other off then defending their consumer base. There are definitely harassers involved in gamergate, but that's why they established a "harassment patrol" to try and get people to cut the shit. Anti-gamergate meanwhile dabbles in dying their dogs blue and defending Ben "rape is funny" Kuchera.
