so this was fine. Definitely felt its length at times and for a 3.5 hour movie called "The Irishman" I sure feel like I don't know the character as much as I oughta, but it had enough great scenes throughout that it was still a solid watch. Certainly a LESSER Scorsese though

I think more than anything it was great to see Pesci back, I think he was my favorite part of this. He's so good at portraying that...subtle menace. No one can do it quite like him
Pacino was great too, nice seeing him in a meaty role again for once. Felt so bad for him at the end :( FUCK Frank!
I haven't been CRAZY about De Niro's acting in like...this whole century (Silver Linings Playbook included) and this didn't really change that tbh. I mean, he was fine, but I feel like he got outshone by quite a bit by the former two. Maybe part of that was the contacts, GOD why did they have to give him those. Who CARES if his eyes are blue if it's gonna be that distracting?? It wasn't quite as bad as Depp in Black Mass but I still wish they wouldn't have bothered. I thought it was the de-aging that was distracting me at first but everyone else looked fine
SPEAKING of de-aging though, the one criticism I'd have about it is the scenes that required physicality (like the cornerstore hand-stomping) you could totally tell it was old man De Niro lumbering about. Honestly, I think I would've preferred it with a different actor, even if those scenes were pretty limited. Worked out p well for Godfather II!
IN THE END it kinda felt like more of a victory lap for the main actors/Scorsese, which didn't make for a bad movie, it just could've been BETTER. Looking forward to Scorsese getting back with DiCaprio after this |
