I find it hard to take the "early reaction" reviews seriously ever, especially when it comes to Marvel/Star Wars

really liked this! I would've been fine with a whole movie of the high school comedy stuff from the beginning so I was a bit ehh when the villains started getting introduced, but that stuff def got good by the end. And they did a p good job BLENDING the two together
|
I was so confused by Gyllenhaal's performance in the beginning, like I was thinking it was sooo bad (for him). But the twist was p great, pretty much pulled a reverse Mandarin there. Loved the "toast" scene. And the crazy thing is Mysterio was OBVI gonna be the villain but the misdirection was good enough to make me p much forget about that in the first half
Ned/Angourie Rice's fling was hilarious and had some of the best jokes of the movie ez. And everything with Martin Starr
That mid-credits scene was perfect, so glad they brought JK Simmons back and him being an Alex Jones type this time fits so well
The end credits scene on the other hand...uhh someone's gonna have to explain that one to me. Like SHIELD befriended the Kree so they can pose as them so that they can...go on vacation? idk |

hey you're WRONG
I didn't think the jokes in this felt anything like the rest of the MCU (except for obviously Homecoming and maybe like IM3). But I was already a fan of McKenna's writing from his Community days so

YOU’RE wrong. I really can’t believe you found this funny
this just convinced me to never watch Community EVER! |
ok woah woah woah Community is like 90% Harmon's baby but McKenna did co-write most of the best episodes. And he co-wrote Homecoming too!!
The Peter tingle jokes were probably the worst parts but TELL ME you didn't at least laugh at Martin Starr's story about his wife. I can't believe you hated the exposition scene too, it was so GLEEFULLY over-the-top/tongue-in-cheek

Light spoilers Zersch don’t read:
Everyone I was with was stonefaced the entire movie, I don’t think I chuckled a single time. I’m not trying to be a contrarian film cricket, I legitimately thought the humor was so rough and way different from Homecoming. I don’t remember Martin Starr’s wife story at all, you’d have to remind me. I do remember the kids cracking up when his camera fell in the water
The exposition scene was so awkward, I don’t know how to describe it. His motivations felt classic Marvel paper thin
I really think it’ll be such a forgotten and pointless MCU movie that we’ll all forget in two months but HEY! What do I know. I can’t believe it’s fourth best for you, it’s like fourth worst for me |
I wonder how much of it comes down to setting? Cuz the group I was with was mostly loving it/there were no kids in sight/I was sipping on a Long Island throughout. But those latter two points were true of Captain Marvel which kinda sucked all the same so who knows
|
Mysterio's motivation was definitely thin, but I don't really expect much from Marvel villains at this point. Performance-wise and "ability"-wise I thought he was fun |
I agree it'll probably be mostly forgotten, but I think that's also true of all Marvel movies save a select handful (p much the ones I'd rank above it). If I'm just looking for LIGHT FUN it's a movie I can see myself coming back to (p similar to IM3 in that way)
