I think Logan getting recognition for screenplay is pretty cool/unexpected tbh, not sure it deserved a Best Picture nom (TDK is still the only one that has deserved that imo)

Would've liked to see a Blade Runner nom if anything, at least over Dunkirk

1. Lady Bird
2. Get Out
3. Three Billboards
4. Dunkirk
first three are all pretty interchangeable tho. Dunkirk is kinda like Gravity to me where I get why it's nominated for so much cuz it's really impressive on a technical level, but the movie itself did little for me
Still wanna see CMBYN and maybe Phantom Thread/Shape of Water

Agreed, although I think the script was a way bigger issue than the directing for that movie

I honestly wish I could say I am surprised at this point.
But I'm not! |
lol same. That’s why award shows are mostly jokes. It’d be nice if it gets better down the line when a more modern generation become the voters, not these Oscar bait loving old fucks
|
hey just replace "award shows" with "elections" and "Oscar bait" with "nationalism/racism" and you just described the state of American politics! (:

Saw:
Three Billboards (again)
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk (again)
Shape of Water
Darkest Hour was decent, not bad/not amazing. It felt very similar to Lincoln for me (though a lesser version of that), where it was a pure acting showcase which is worth seeing the movie for, while the movie itself is nothing too flashy and is really just a by-the-numbers retelling of a slice of history. I did appreciate how perfectly this led into seeing Dunkirk again tho (:
Shape of Water I dug quite a bit. I get the non-subtle criticism but I feel like from the beginning this always meant to have the feel of a modern day fairy tale (which the ending definitely reinforced). Michael Shannon's character alone was worth seeing it for, he was amazing every time he was on screen. He def should've been nominated (especially compared to Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer??)
I think I'd go:
1. Three Billboards
2. Get Out
3. Lady Bird
4. The Shape of Water
--gap--
5. Dunkirk
6. Darkest Hour | |
