If all you care about is less responsibility and more mobility then renting does makes sense. I had a good relationship with my landlord before I moved out so I do miss being able to contact them and having shit fixed usually within a day
But as far as ROI, privacy, and customizability, buying a house has totally been worth it for those three things alone. My house is already worth about 40% more than when I bought it (probably won't be quite that high by the time I sell it but still), I'm paying around the same amount I was before, I no longer have to worry about noise complaints (whether from having people over, my speakers, or my dog), and I was able to build a fully decked out home theater that only was a twinkle in my eye while I was at my apartment
it's not for everyone but I'm very glad I made the jump in the end
