Lyanna Mormont was gr8 but I'm nooot convinced she'll have the range to pull off Ellie. But we'll see!
Pedro as Joel is clearly typecasting off his Mando role lol. Not a bad choice tho

I never played the games because I'm scared of zombies but I'm looking forward to this! I'd love for the VA's to make cameos or have parts. |
I can't wait to see how they pull off the clickers. One of the best video game enemies EVER imo! Although half of that is just the sound design so they better not mess with that too much
also Ashley Johnson has been in a decent amount of live action so I could def see her getting a cameo at least. That'd be neat

Pedro hamming it up was the only redeeming part of that movie. He did what he could man!

Dever definitely looks like Ellie but I mean, she's 13 in the first game so that'd be a p big age gap

yeah ep 1 was p good. Pretty much a shoo-in for best video game adaptation already considering the competition
Pedro was GREAT as Joel, I think he's nailing it so far. Him and Tess have been the two best portrayals. Ellie was...fine! It's gonna hinge on her and Joel's relationship and I did like the one scene of them together so that's promising
|
iirc in the game her mask gets broken and Joel starts to panic before realizing that she's able to breathe in the spores just fine. Since they changed the infection vector from spores to tendrils in the show they had to go with the more basic "I was bitten but now I'm fine" route
I agree it was a bit underwhelming. The reveal in the game is so much more dramatically satisfying |

Damnnn. I wasn't ALL the way in after last week but I def am now. That was great
|
they really nailed that clicker intro. Felt JUST like the games, the absolute dread you feel when it's walking right by you and you know you shouldn't move an inch despite how badly you want to. Also some great blocking in that scene with Joel reloading, when the clicker disappears from frame
Wow @ that kiss of death scene at the end. Ewwww!!! I'm getting a bit more sold on the tendrils change after that
CHUCKLED at the bit with Joel giving Tess a boost. They're not going over the top with it but I like those little winks they throw in now and then. The ceiling collapsing behind them as they enter a room being another one |

what a departure! Both from the show's narrative and from what happens with Bill (and Frank) in the game. Quite the elaborate way to ultimately show how Joel/Ellie get a car and supplies lol
I liked the changes though, it was a p heartwarming story. Def was on the verge of choking up during the "last day" scene, though using On the Nature of Daylight is almost cheating. I liked the way they abruptly cut the song as soon as Bill breaks out the pills
Can't believe it took me til the end credits to realize that Frank was my boi Armond lol. I knew I recognized the guy but for some reason was thinking it was Garret Dillahunt |

eh! Solid ep though probably the weakest yet. Joel and Ellie relationship building was pretty good, every scene with the Kansas City crew was kinda whatever. I feel like they were trying to flesh them out into more than "bad guys shooting at the protagonists" but can't say I care about any of them. It was cool seeing Tommy's VA show up though, he was the long-haired bearded guy. Sure looked the part!
You can definitely tell they had fun writing up that truck fight scene lol, some ambient lines ripped straight from the game and ofc all the popping up from cover. Joel killing that kid at the end was suitably brutal
What do we think that lil earthquake was all about? I assume it's gonna be a bloater, but I could also see it being some new weird monstrosity they're introducing. Like the nexus of the local tendril network or something |

okay… I’m not going to be as great as describing because I haven’t played the video game.. but anyway. My daughter told me I would like this and after episode 1 I was like… why do you think I would like this? Episode 2 was a little better… but then episode 3.. amazing!! Omg Bill <3 I loved him! Great episode and should be watched with a really good glass of wine. Episode 4 was good, it’s obvious the relationship between Joel and Ellie was going to progress… but also the added bonus of Melanie Lynskey, who I love.
I reminded my daughter that she loved the Massachusetts State House when we visited in 2019 and that was the place where Ellie blew herself and the infected up so that was nostalgic lol…
I keep seeing “clicker” mentioned.. is that what they call the infected ? I do like the fact that the infected can’t see. Good concept.
Anyway good series so far.

the clicker is basically a stage 2 zombie in this universe, they were the ones in episode 2 that couldn't see and had to "click" (use echolocation) to find people. They're much harder to kill than regular zombies since all the fungus growing on them acts like armor
stage 1 zombies are like the grandma in episode 1, they look more like regular people and still have use of their eyes
then there's stage 3 zombies which...you might be seeing real soon |

p good ep, think I'd slot it just below ep 2 & 3
|
I'm mostly in the same boat as you Dyl, everything from the first game was so long ago that I only have STRONG memories of the beginning and the ending with just a few moments scattered in-between. I knew there was something sad with Henry & Sam but honestly didn't remember what it was til just before it went down
Definitely the strongest part of the ep. Lamar Johnson's line reading of "What did I do?!" was heartbreaking. They both did a great job, lot of impact in little time
on the flip side, now that it's over I think the "villain" side of the KC plot was a flop. I didn't care for Melanie Lynskey's character at all, and it was even worse in this ep when they pulled out one of the lamest tropes of the "ruthless killer" suddenly being trigger-shy when she has her Moby Dick in her sights. She did it TWICE! The first time was especially egregious, she fully turned her head away from her target and stopped to stare at the truck for like a full 10 seconds. Good thing he didn't have a hidden weapon on him! |

good stuff. Only complaint was some events felt a bit rushed here, there was a bit of checking off boxes in the later half of this ep. But definitely some really strong individual scenes
|
nailed the big Joel and Ellie argument scene, not surprised that was left pretty much untouched. 10/10, that hit me right in the gut, especially Joel's reaction to Ellie bringing up Sarah
...was a bit undercut by the next scene where they reunite after a couple words tho. That was one of those moments that felt a biiit rushed
some CUTE dialogue on their way to Colorado, it was nice to see Joel actually smile a bit. "Everyone LOVED contractors 🙂"
disappointed in survivalist Joel pulling the blade out of his torso. You dummy! |
