If you know the scene, you know the scene. It's the best part of the movie, hands down. The amount of build-up is rare for a movie like this, and while it is a cool thing to do, I don't think the movie really uses the time wisely. I can't tell you a single trait of anyone in this movie. It doesn't even really have a protagonist. Just a classic group of campers who wanna BANG ALL NIGHT BAYBAY. I think watching this with Curtis helped me enjoy the ridiculousness of it all. Acting is way over the top and the writing is exactly what you'd think. I would not be surprised if my score lowered in the future.
SCORE - 5/10
Killer - Backwoods & Redneck: I'm doing the same thing Curtis is doing. 2 Points to the favorite, 1 point to second favorite, and 0 for least favorite. Last year S2 won by ONE movie, WOWEE! If I'd have to predict, I'd say S2 is gonna stay on top but we'll see...
Wolf Creek v Hills Have Eyes v The Burning. The S1 and S2 movies were some of my least favorite of the year, and something tells me the Burning won't be too different. Hills Have Eyes gets the 2. Maybe because I really like Wes Craven and even though this movie is a hot mess, I can at least see what he's going for. In my opinion, Wolf Creek was pretty unmemorable. A few nice wide shots mixed with horrible character logic and 90 mins of serial killer torture. 0 points for you! Which means the Burning and Jason Alexander get 1 point!

I got more than enough of the Stuff. Too much! This movie was all over the place. It’s got a really interesting premise, exploring the horror behind food manufacturing and marketing, but that’s pretty much it! The acting in this movie is not the best! Mo might be the most passive speaking protagonist I’ve ever seen. He sounds like he’s on Xanax, it’s the most peculiar line delivery in movie history. I thought he was gonna be an early kill, but nope, he’s the main guy! I would have really liked to see the kid do more. It felt like his story ended after he escaped his house. The scene with him in the grocery store is so hilariously bad, I loved it.
But yea, just a lot of “huh” moments for me. Most of the dialogue feels made up on the spot. People will take three sentences to say something so simple. The late great Danny Aiello has a nice appearance, where at first you think he’s a bad guy...then he just gets killed by his dog. Okay! Paul Sorvino also shows up and has a nice little racist scene towards the end. Alright! But yea, if you wanna watch a movie about body paranoia or a giant killer substance, just watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers or the Blob.
SCORE - 4/10
Misc. - Body Horror:
From Beyond v The Skin I Live In v The Stuff. S3 gets destroyed in this category, so they get 0 points! From Beyond is a typical wacky sci-fi horror with great practical effects and a fun cast. The Skin I Live In, however, is so insane. It’s hard to figure out where it’s going but once you realize what’s happening, yikes. I remember thinking it was pretty problematic, but I think as a whole it’s just an all around better movie than From Beyond. 2 points for S2 and 1 point for S1.

I love Vincent Price. This movie is essentially him being a dick for 90 mins, then finally getting his comeuppance at the very end. That’s the movie. A 3.6 on LB feels a little high, but I can see the appeal. There’s some pretty cool visuals with the man in red and a great Vincent Price performance, who obviously steals the show. The gorilla burning scene was such a crazy end to what felt like such a small subplot, but MAN it was brutal. The “dream” or “sacrifice” scene with the wife felt so weird and out of place. It felt like they were just trying to pad the time. Also, shout out to the most quiet “death by arrows” scene in cinematic HISTORY.
SCORE - 5/10
Paranormal - Devil/Demon/Hell: In the Mouth of Madness v The Beyond v The Masque of the Red Death
Not too difficult of a choice here. Aside from some fun practical effects, (which honestly looked like someone smudged play-doh on their face) The Beyond was kind of a miss for me. 0 points for S2! In the Mouth of Madness has grown on me a bit since we first watched it. It’s a nice Carpenter gem with a great Sam Neil performance. 2 points for S1 and 1 point for S3.

Top 10 weirdest movie intros of all time. This movie has a lot of fun and the characters really sell the campy tone. The best friend’s death was unexpected and really emotional. All and all, this feels like a great love letter to 50’s horror. It didn’t personally stand out enough for me to enjoy it as much as others, but it’s movies like these that really laid the groundwork for Stranger Things. Also, I enjoyed the quick Dick Miller “Walter” cameo. Bucket of Blood is great! I originally had it at a 5 but bumped it to a 6 due to my own personal opinion and absolutely zero outside influence.
SCORE - 6/10
Monster - Virusl: Afflicted v The Battery v Night of the Creeps
Pretty easy decision for me. Afflicted was such a nice surprise and enjoyable watch, it’s just a shame it’s not a virus movie, haha. 2 points for S1. The Battery is fine, but doesn’t have the charm or personality to compete with Night of the Creeps. 1 point for S3 and 0 for S2.

It’s an anthology movie from the ’40s. They’re not all gonna be winners! I really enjoyed this event though most of it feels pretty dated. It’s really cool to watch movies that were such huge influences on future horror. I can still find charm in a moment that at the time was considered scary but nowadays plays for comical or corny.
The framing device story works great. I love how interactive it is with the shorts and I love the ending sequence where the man’s running through all the different elements from the various stories. I wish other anthologies utilized the framing story more.
The Dummy story is the best. Love the ending in the hospital and the build-up of tension between the two. The golf story is the worst. I think they wanted to have a story with some comic levity but it just doesn’t age well compared to the other four. Oh well!
SCORE - 6/10
Misc. - Anthology: Ghost Stories v Creepshow v Dead of Night
Ghost Stories had some pretty SOLID scares early on but really lost steam and dragged on. 0 points for S1. Creepshow is a fun time with more hits than misses, but ultimately I enjoyed the overall framing of Dead of Night and most of its stories/sequences. While Creepshow may be more consistent, Dead of Night has my favorite story out of them all and a much more entertaining finish. So there ya go. 2 points for S3 and 1 for S2.

Got to watch this with Curtis and had a good OLE time. His post covers most of what I want to say, although I will mention that I haven’t had a chance to read Who Goes There yet. I guess the strong variations from the source material where budgetary? I can’t think of any reason why. It’s got the charm of an old school horror movie. The idea of a division between camps is interesting but isn’t explored too much. There’s just way too many characters and a romance that feels so out of place with the rest of the movie. The sequences with the monster are fun, it’s like that old Halo mode “Juggernaut” where someone is insanely overpowered and everyone else just has to unload on him in order to stop him. There’s a great fire sequence that’s super impressive given the time it was made. All in all, an okay watch that I’m happy I can cross off my list.
SCORE - 5/10
Monster - Neo Monster: Splinter v Black Lagoon v The Thing from Another World

Wow. This felt way ahead of its time. This movie does so much to develop its atmosphere, which IMO is the best way to do horror. From the creepy kids, to the weird sounds Miss Giddens hears when wandering through the house, you just feel really on edge the entire time, or at least I did. There’s also a crazy pop-up about 2/3s in that really got a nice little YELP out of me. I had no idea how it would end, and with only five minutes left, I was worried it’d feel super rushed but it didn’t. I love the ending.
I’ve been listening to the opening song all week. Much like the rest of the movie, it just sticks with me. I watched the first half just in my living room, then watched the rest with headphones in my room. JINKIES! But yea, I loved it. The main performances are all wonderful and I thought the maid was hilarious in the way she’d just agree with Miss Giddens, not sure how else to react to her bizarre accusations. Like oh okay, you think the kids are possessed? Wtf are we supposed to do?
It’s still really early, but I think I found my Martyrs/Midsommar. I just don’t see anything else on the list resonating with me as much as this did. I guess we’ll see!
SCORE - 9/10
Paranormal - Ghost & Spirits: Ringu v Tigers Are Not Afraid v The Innocents
I didn’t hate any of these, which makes this a pretty important round, point wise. Innocents will get the 2 points. I’m gonna give Ringu the edge over Tigers, although it’s really slow and a bit too ambiguous for me, it still left more of an impact than Tigers, which was good but not as great as I hoped it would be.

Gotta say, I was pretty disappointed by this. Like Curtis mentioned, there’s a lot of hype over the ending, and I just don’t see it. The idea of the two leads getting digested in the belly of an ancient god or whatever sounds really unique on paper, but the entire ending felt so rushed. So much of the main storyline is thrown at us in the last 15 minutes that it’s impossible to digest it. HA!
I couldn’t stand Gray. His character felt so distracting to the creepy atmosphere the church had set up. I also thought it was really weird that out of everyone else, the non-believer was the one that thought what was going on was real. There’s some really spooky moments with the audio recordings that I enjoyed, but I just couldn’t buy into anything else this had to offer.
SCORE - 4/10
Misc - Found Footage: Hell House LLC v As Above, So Below v The Borderlands
What a trio! As disappointing as the Borderlands ending was, it’s nowhere near as bad as the ending of Hell House LLC. That being said, the location for Hell House is fun, and there’s a few really creepy moments that got me. As Above, So Below was definitely not as bad as I thought it would be. There’s a scene where a character is stuck in a small space and it’s nauseatingly claustrophobic. As Above gets the 2, Hell House 1, Borderlands 0.

Creepy kiddies! The kills in this movie are weird, they’re like right on line between brutal and awkward, I can’t really decide. That being said, I thought the teacher’s death was gnarly, especially with the build up and seeing the kid’s reactions. Talk about a bad day at school! I think once you realize what’s going on, the story really picks up. I love the final act in the attic where the doctor has to rescue the kid, hoping Frank can keep his wife calm. He doesn’t. I enjoyed this a lot more than Videodrome and Scanners, but I still think the Fly is Cronenberg’s best.
Reading the backstory on this is crazy. Apparently Cronenberg wrote this while dealing with an ugly divorce and custody battle over his kid. This is like when an famous musician writes a song over their ex, except in this case, Cronenberg is framing his wife to look like a lunatic giving birth to an army of little monsters.
SCORE - 7/10
Misc - Creepy Kid: We Need to Talk about Kevin v Pet Sematary v The Brood
We Need to Talk about Kevin was my second favorite movie of S1, so it wins the 2 points. Pet Sematary lost more and more stock with me as time went by. It’s a solid story, but drags for so long and the acting is pretty unmemorable. Brood gets 1 point and Pet gets 0.

I love when horror is used as a metaphor for dealing with some sort of issue, whether it’s racism, trauma, or in this case, dealing with the inevitable death of a loved one. While some parts of the final “chase” were a bit goofy for me, I still really enjoyed where it took the story and the overall ending. Loved the sequence in the halls where the walls got smaller and smaller. Also lots of nice subtle performances that never felt forced or too over the top.
SCORE - 7/10
Relic [Paranormal - Haunted House]: House on Haunted Hill v The Haunting v Relic
The Haunting was one of my favorites last year and easily gets the 2 points for me. I’ve grown more fond of House on Haunted Hill over the years but am still slightly disappointed at what felt like a waste of a really strong premise. It’s close but because I think the Relic at a more original and consistent execution, I’m going to give it the 1 point and Haunted Hill the 0. Sorry Mr. Price.

If anyone deserves a shot at remaking NotLD, it’s Savini. That being said, I found this to be extremely underwhelming. It’s never a good sign to constantly be thinking about the original while viewing a remake. I just don’t think this added anything efficient enough to justify a remake. Tony Todd gives an okay performance, but his character feels so over the top and pales next to Duane Jones, who’s calm yet commanding presence paints the perfect picture for what made the original so timeless. I do like that they added more of an arc to Barbara but I couldn’t help but think it was at Ben’s expense. The ending is fine but severely lacks the same punch of the original. I’m all more a remake doing it’s own thing, but this felt stuck between doing something different and giving us more of the same.

[Monster - Undead]: Reanimator v Day of the Dead v Night of the Living Dead (remake)
This is a pretty straightforward ranking for me. Love Reanimator. 2 points. Day of the Dead is messy but has some great gags in it. 1 point. NotLD gets left with the 0.

While I love the different approach of this movie, especially the opening, I gotta say… it was so painfully slow. It’s a long 86 minutes. The extremely close ups of the ants were really cool and I loved the overall sound design, but plotwise it’s insanely difficult to figure out what’s going on, and the ending feels like they ran out of money and quickly pieced together something that would work. There was so much build up with the scientist’s bitten hand. I was WAITING for a scene where ants bursted out of it. But nope! Nothing. Just… nothing.

[Monster - Animals & Nature]: Cujo v The Fog v Phase IV
I’ve got two 5s and one 4, this is clearly not my favorite category. 0 points goes to the Fog, I understand that it’s a cult classic to some but for me I felt extremely underwhelmed and unengaged with the story and characters. 1 point goes to Phase IV for being solid sci-fi movie but a pretty hollow horror. And unbelievably the 2 points will go to CUJO! WOOF!
