I thought the writing in this movie was just horrible. I felt like nine times out of ten, the movie would continuously tell us things instead of showing them. For example, the opening scene at the wedding, where they made sure to beat us over the head with the information that Earl always misses occasions. I thought the dialogue was like this the entire movie. It's like they were so afraid we weren't going to understand the point of every scene, so they made sure to have the actors lay it all out for us. We don't need Earl and the DEA Agent to spoon feed us the importance of family and this character's regret. It felt cheap and unearned. Scenes would have so much more impact with less dialogue and more reactions. I don't need Earl's granddaughter to yell at him over the phone about how everyone was right about him. It's melodramatic and takes me out of the moment.
So many scenes and events feel so forced or unnecessary. Do we really need the opening scene with the wedding? 12 years is a long time, and I couldn't help but laugh at how everyone looked exactly the same. You could have easily opened the movie with Earl coming to see his granddaughter, but it's like the movie was afraid that we wouldn't be able to figure out his past without those first fifteen minutes.
You can tell that Bradley Cooper did not care about this movie. His performance felt so phoned in and uninteresting. The conversations with the police have no substance to them. They're all just basic police jargon to help carry us between scenes.
I was really into Julio's character. I think the only scene that was interesting for me was Earl's conversation with Julio at the mansion party about Julio's loyalty to the cartel and what they did for him. Aside from the hypocrisy of Earl preaching about family after having a threesome, I thought that Julio's outlook of being loyal to the man that took care of him, no matter the cost, was an intriguing spin that would play out in an unexpected way. NOPE! They randomly kill off poor Andy Garcia just to enforce more rules onto Earl, something that OBVIOUSLY upsets Julio, and then we never see him do anything about it. He just accepts it. I thought it was such a missed opportunity.
This movie just didn't do anything for me. Clint had a few okay moments but overall, I thought most of his scenes were corny and out of place. Much like the entire movie. 3/10
