THOUGHTS
|
SO I have a few qualms with the opening scene. I thought it was weird when Idris Elba used his teleportation power and only sent Hulk to Earth. Why didn't he send Thor/Loki away too? I started laughing because I imagined Thor being like...wow okay Idris.
I thought the Loki death was really forced and didn't nearly have the impact that it could have. Blindly attacking Thanos didn't seem like a Loki thing to do. It felt like he threw himself into a situation that he knew was going to get him killed instead of trying to join Thanos/find a way to escape. Loki is such a big character and it sucks that his death felt so rushed and avoidable.
I get the film's ambition of trying to fit in so many people, but it really was a lot to swallow. Thanos is essentially the main character of this movie and even though he had more character weight than I thought he would, watching him go from planet to planet collecting stones became a little boring. It's like watching a friend play a video game that they've already beaten a million times.
The writing for Marvel is super hit or miss for me. It works great with the GOTG cast who continue to have great chemistry together but in scenes like the "Iron Man: Ben and Jerry flavor" conversation, they feel super forced and way too long. Did anyone else feel like that Piper and Tony scene was really weird? It felt like they placed them in a park, tied a sweater around RDJ neck and told them to improv their way through a conversation about having a baby.
ALSO, you knew a movie with so many stars was gonna suffer somewhere and I got three letters for you. C-G-I. Poor Don Cheadle and Mark Ruffalo looked like floating heads when they were in their respective machine outfits.
The problem with this ending is that there really is no resolution, it's just a marketing cliffhanger. I'm surprised that the post-credit scene wasn't just a message of where to go pre-order your Infinity War 2 tickets. I get that you want to end it on a Thanos victory, but the whole movie was a sequence of Thanos victories. And kind of what Curtis said, all these people that we see disappear are almost guaranteed to come back!
Oh and by the way...where the fuck was Thor when Thanos was kicking everyone's ass in Wakanda and taking the final stone? Was he on a lightening cooldown?
Quick game. How many times did Thanos ask for a stone while torturing someone until someone else said "STOP! PLEASE DON'T! JUST TAKE THE STONE!"?

THREE TIMES! IT HAPPENED THREE TIMES! |
Things I did like!
-GOTG continue to carry the Marvel universe. Watch out DWAYNE, there's a new WWE actor coming for your spot.
- Red Skull showing back up was pretty cool, I was hoping for a Capt v Red Skull rematch but I've got a sinking feeling that it isn't going to happen.
-Josh Brolin was great. Made Thanos a lot more compelling than I thought it he would.
-Spiderman and Iron Man interactions were great. It made me really want to watch Homecoming.
