Early 1993 Usenet and I still say lole. Acronyms that can be reduced to less syllables is always preferred.
Also, the woman on the one Curb Your Enthusiasm who would say "l-o-l" IRL was hilariously maddening.

Yeah- I didn't count BBSs as "internet" but those were 90 or so for me.
