Horror is a genre that I am largely disappointed with so I don't watch much of it. I'm sure there's good movies burried in the pile of trash but I really need good writing, good story, good characters to enjoy a movie and with the horror genre I mostly am left with cheap shocks, eye-rolly fakeouts (halloween movies worst offender), and hollow stories. I think a lot of them get written backwards where the slashing comes first and a badly cobbled together story comes last. That being said, there are a few notable ones that pass the test for me. Top three that I can think of:

Saw I
Hereditary
It (2017)

HM to Lights Out for being genuinely scary. I saw that movie in 2016 and I still think about the scene with the demon sitting next to the bed scratching at the floor

And you……..?

It was a good little story. Not a lot to it though. I was left questioning why it was rated nearly 100% and one of my most trusted cinephile's top 5 movies of all time.
