it struck me as the kind of thing that could be seen as discrediting Lee when he had nothing to do with it. the director very rarely plays a role in the marketing of a movie (especially with a project that does not seem especially passionate) and Lee has always gotten publicly defensive really quickly. Also there's no way that this is BAD for that designer, it's pretty clear to everybody that the studio is in the wrong here.
and I don't want Lee to be forced to kickstart every project he does from here on out.

The letter from the guy seemed like a plea (to me) to Spike Lee to help him get what was rightfully his. He wasnt blaming Spike for stealing his idea, just asking him to investigate and see whats up. To get the money for his design that he deserves.
Spike is the director, he must have some weight around the movie! Even if he didnt hire the guy personally someone working for him did. The director is the boss of the movie right?
I have no doubt Spike Lee had nothing to do with this personally, it seemes to have been the agency that lowballed that guy. But Spike´s response is just disappointing. As an artist himself he must have an opinion on stolen ideas. Surely Spike Lee doesnt want people pirating his movies? But its okay when his movie pirates from someone else?
He just didnt seem to care about that guy, or the fact that his work was obviously stolen. Didnt want to do anything about it and I thought his response was quite rude if anything.
Spike Lee´s answer to the guys letter on twitter:
"I Never Heard Of This Guy Juan Luis Garcia,If He Has A Beef It's Not With Me.I Did Not Hire Him,Do Not Know Him.Cheap Trick Writing To Me.YO"
"Cheap trick", yes Spike quite the cheap trick writing you for help to get the money you are deserved on the movie you are making.
Seems like justice was served to me when this movie flopped.
Comparison posters if anyone is interested:

I dont think you can do an Alien movie with the Xenomorphs in the WORLD TODAY. The first movie was built on top of the idea of an unknown enemy, something scary, powerful and unknown. People are way more scared of the unknown, something they cant picture or dont know. Thats what made Alien such a great movie.
I think James Cameron figured this out and why he went for a more actiony Aliens, compared the the more suspenseful / stalkery Alien. You knew the Xenomorphs at that point and I dont think another stalker Alien movie would have as much of a hit. I think it was a pretty brilliant move by Cameron.
Now today with all of the different Alien movies, I dont think anyone is LEGIT scared of the Xenomorphs as they where when the first Alien movie came out. All the mystery is pretty much out the window.
Therefore I think that going down the Aliens route will lead to a better movie but if Blomkamp can recreate the feel from Alien and goes down that route I will be seriously impressed.
Guess we will just have to see!

Am I the only person who liked Alien 3? |
I was very disappointed with it, seeing that David Fincher directed it. I expected more. Its decent movie in the overall perspective of things but compared to Alien and Aliens its a disappointment. Seeing Charles Dance was fun though.
