I will let Nate die every time. Everyone is already nervous, we don't need him mucking everything up further.
I want to bring Marcus aboard because maybe he can calm everyone else down. Though no one else but Dom and Martha have their faith mentioned, I assume some of these others might be more willing to find comfort in Jesus talk in a situation like this.
I want to bring Carly along. Even though her death would leave no one behind that missed her, her nursing ability might be needed now that I put a boot on Nate's head. Plus she saved a kid and I saw it happen so I respect that. I don't care about her profession - maybe Marcus will have something to say, though.
I want to bring Rory along. He's a criminal, yes. He's charged with murder, yes. But if the rest of us are seriously incapable of figuring out how to man the lifeboat, he's necessary. Plus he's not been convicted... yet.
Saul can sink. The secrets can die with him and the world will go on as it would have without him. Unless his secrets lead to neutralizing a nuclear attack or something that would cost millions of lives. Then maybe I'd change my mind. Otherwise, he's definitely going to get paranoid at some point and start trouble on the boat thinking one or all of us are out to get him.
I bring Mike aboard. He's ordinary, he's older than a lot of the other people I'm going to let die, but maybe he will hook me up with a nice washing machine when we get to shore. I let Mike die and save Amy instead because he is boring and Amy has a lot of life left to live.
Brett. Oh Brett. This isn't going to make Carly or likely anyone else on board very happy, but Brett is fish food. Consider it a mercy killing.
Russ and Amy are also lost to the drink. No pun intended, Russ. I don't really know why I'd rather these two die than the other couple, but I do. I think their kids will be okay. Depending on when Amy had the kids they could still be really young too. Upon consideration, the only change I would make to my picks is saving Amy and leaving Mike behind. Amy can sell her shitty dead husband as a hero if she cares what her kids think of him. Plus she's young and can remarry and have a good life.
Dom gets a spot. I was okay orphaning two children previously (not to mention murdering Brett) but by now I'm feeling a little guilty and can't create a widow and three fatherless children on the heels of drowning Russ and Amy.
Martha would be reaching out a hand but I would turn my back and pretend I didn't see her. I appreciate the work she did in life but what's done is done and she's already choking on water by the time I see Richard.
Richard, come aboard. You're older but your sense of humor will serve us all well in these trying times. Not to mention you're not going to be easily shaken and can be a leader figure. And the whole concentration camp thing. You survived that, you deserve to live until old age.
Jimmy and Mary get up here, you crazy kids. Though they would be leaving no children behind like Russ and Amy, I just feel better about these two. Jimmy obviously loves his wife dearly and doesn't need to drown himself with alcohol every day to make it through. I want these two to have children and grow old together. Maybe they can adopt Russ and Amy's kids.
Matthew gets a spot. He's obviously a piece of shit, but potentially no worse than Rory. Of course the two most controversial picks would come attached with the two most important things. We need that food to survive. He's ignorant, but he's also twenty years old. He's young and angry, but he can still see the errors of his ways and change. He's outnumbered here, regardless. Plus I got to the end of the list with one open spot and already killed everyone else so he is saved by default.
---
My picks for ease of reading: Marcus, Carly, Rory, Mike, Amy, Dom, Richard, Jimmy + Mary, and Matthew. | |

If I could tweak two things:
1. I would swap Mike for Amy. That way the two kids back home have their mom and she can lie to them and tell them their shitty alcoholic father (stepfather?) died a heroic death out on the high seas.
2. I would have Rory circle the lifeboat back around the leftovers just to leave Brett behind again. | |

Through the whole scenario, despite reading lifeboat, I imagined a lil tugboat instead.
Toot toot!

Brett: The paralyzed boy. Our paddle. SAVE HIM |
Shit, I was so shortsighted with my Brett murder.
