This was it. This great adventure had all led to this, to the realization that Hustus had just been a pawn in someone else's game, that he'd been misled by their guide, and he now needed to do something about it. He reached for his items. No! They were all gone. All he had left was really the only thing he'd ever effectively used, the longbow Akmong Sus had given him in that tavern. It seemed only natural to turn that weapon on him now.
Hustus closed his eyes and took a deep breath to steady his nerves and his aim. He lifted the longbow toward Akmong Sus, deliberately pulled the bowstring back as he exhaled that breath, and... tossed the bow to the side.
It was useless! If this journey had Hustus anything, it was that home was a lot safer than this, but also that his adventuring instincts were bad. Real bad. If his first thought was to fire off a bow, he ought to think twice. He wasn't quite sure what he was about to do, but he faithfully leapt forward toward Akmong Sus and let fate take the wheel. |
