Anyone else get really into the Olympics? I personally prefer the Winter Games, so I am very much looking forward to next month. Normally, a time difference like this would not be great, but I'll be able to tailor my schedule around the live events (mostly airing between Midnight and 1pm Eastern every day)
I was never a fan of the location. I understand, and it works, that all of the indoor events are in the town of Sochi where it is a subtropical beach town and all of the outdoor events are 35-45 minutes away in the mountains. It works, but it shouldn't be hosted by the ONE subtropical (or not really winter-y) place in Russia.
The corruption is a whole different problem. This is the most expensive Olympics to date at around $51 Billion. Putin had the Russian committee hire a bunch of friends and favorites for more expensive contracts. A lot of projects were being built at 2-5 times as expensive as some European contractors were pricing the projects at. A number of contractors who did not get work say part of the contract was that 10-20% of the money you make (from the IOC) would have to be given to the Russian Committee and politicians.
The roadway and railway built to make travel from the city to the mountains easier cost more than the entire Vancouver Olympics.
Geez! I'm really worried there will be some serious injuries from this :(
They were talking about how there are a number of female athletes pushing to have a different Slopestyle course for Men and Women. The difference in weight is a big concern with the height and location of where the women are landing on a lot of these courses, not just Sochi.
