OHHHH BABY. Guess what time it is
One of my favorite annual FE traditions will continue. Jacob and I were thinking about doing a scaled down version this year. I've been bad with watching movies these past few months and I'm not averaging neaaaaaaaaarly enough per month to be able to complete this by Halloween, I've just been way more into catching up on tv this year. But you know what, FUCK IT! Let's give it a shot and maybe Ill find the motivation along the way, I do love doing this
It's gonna work exactly the same. I found this chart on reddit. It shows 39 different horror sub-genres and a couple examples from each one (the person said they did a lot of recent examples instead of the best possible pick at times)
We're picking 39 horror movies that we haven't seen, one from each sub-genre. The deadline is HALLOWEEN. It feels early to start this, but we're actually starting it later than we did the first two times by a couple of weeks.
Jacob and I made our list together again so it's movies neither of us have seen. JOIN IN! Use our list or make your own or make substitutes for what you've seen or don't. Zersch and Josh you gonna give it the ole college try again??
Also don't start nitpicking the subgenres that we put some movies under pls, we went by what little we know about some of these movies and we don't wanna be spoiled on what exactly the horror element is unless the description says it. Also don't say so and so sucks because it'll make me not wanna watch it at all, pls and ty

I think we have a good variety of stuff again. We have movies from this year, movies that haven't even come out yet, staples on our lists like Peter Jackson, Dante, Carpenter, del Toro, Cronenberg, some Stephen King, Savini, Frank Oz, even SAUL BASS, an a24 movie, a couple of sequels and remakes, the original THING, and ofc Nic Cage again. I think were missing #1 staple Jeffrey COMBS though! What a shame
We picked these on a whim again. Each time I say I wanna put more thought into the choices and try to dig deep for hidden gems but we tend to give up on that pretty quickly and just start slotting things in. I'm fine with it, it doesn't always have to be gold to be fun. My average ratings for the first two lists were 2.9 and 2.7 which is not great but I don't regret watching either batch. Lets see if this one can be better. Like last year, I'm gonna do a head to head to HEAD thing this year and see which group comes out on top

Fist came Dafoe, then came Song Kang-ho, and for round three I'm happy to report the male nudity that Jacob and I get to witness comes from none other than GEORGE COSTANZA

Here we go babayyyyyy. DIVING IN!
Time for the campy slasher of the bunch. We have it under Killer Backwoods instead of Killer Slasher because we thought it was more of a hillbilly motherfucker. But it still kinda fit maybe
This was....OKAY! Lemme tell you, this shit took ages and ages and ages to finally pop off. It was a boring 4 for the longest time, but when stuff got going it made up for it a bit. In the end I kinda appreciated the build up a lot. I thought people were gonna die quite a few times early on but they were fakeouts and they got me
The movie actually did a good job of subverting expectations left and right. Certain characters died when I didn't expect them to, certain characters DIDN'T die which was as much a surprise, and overall it kinda kept me guessing a bit. Its a F13 clone but it did enough to change things up a little
And it has JASON ALEXANDER!
There's a big scene that's a horror classic now so I had unfortunately seen it, but it still held up. If I didn't know it was coming I would've neverrrrrr seen it coming. Good kills overall for the most part. Better than the first F13s kills tbh
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas
Killer - Backwoods & Redneck: HERE'S THE PLAN! I'm pitting all three movies from all three years against each other. The one I like best gets 2 points, middle gets 1 point, worst one gets nothing. Last year it was nearly dead even between the two, lets see if this year can compete. Last time I did this I remember saying at the end that if you ask me those matchups months later my winner might change. I think that's definitely gonna be the case, recency bias is real
For this one we have The Hidden vs. The Hills Have Eyes vs. Wolf Creek. Not a hard one for me. Hills is the worst of the bunch easy, I think I gave that a 4. Wolf is a low 6 for me and Burning is a 5. Wolf and Burning are decently close

This was directed by none other than SAUL BASS! Legendary graphic designer who did the title sequences for a lot of Hitchcock movies. The only movie he ever directed
Much like The Burning, I kinda hated it for the longest time. It was not holding my attention at all. But for reasons that I cant really put my finger on I thought the last third was pretty interesting and has kinda stuck with me. It definitely had something to say way more than the average animals strike back movie, I wish the first half of the movie explored the same questions as the end
Also, it was actually kinda horrifying. Just the idea that the ants were EVERYWHERE by the end. The young scientist marching through the desert knowing they were all around him. That hole in his mask was brutal
The trap that they carved and caught the old scientist in was good too. I wish we got a gory death there, I wanted one of those time lapses of them swarming him and his body decomposing. Thatd be nasty. It was still gross though, the idea of being stuck down there with all of them swarming at you. EEEEE!
Pretty incredible ANT PHOTOGRAPHY too, that shit was kinda wild. And outside of that, Saul Bass' visual flair was definitely on display a few times
I gave it a 6 initially but settled on a 5 soon after. It was just way too uneven and boring to start
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas
Monster - Animals & Nature: Cujo vs The Fog vs Phase IV. YIKES! Animals and Nature is striking out, all three are a 5 for me, but I'm gonna give it to........Phase IV! It had more to say and was a bit more interesting than the other two disappointments. The Fog barely gets 2nd over melodramatic Cujo. An early lead for 2020!

This is the 1990 Savini remake and its...basically just the original in color. Which is fine. I dont hold the original so dearly in my heart as many people so I'm not a fraction as upset that this movie exists as many people were at the time
It was fine! Always love Tony Todd and he was perfect for the Ben role. I remember Barbara being kinda completely useless in the first one? But she was fine here. Cooper was great, a perfect slimy character who you know is gonna get his in the end
I liked Ben's sad demise in the original more than this, but Coopers death was better here. The dummy shooting the gas pump remains one of the dumbest decisions ever in a horror movie
I'm cool with the idea of remaking the original with updated effects and all but for a movie directed by Savini the practical effects were kinda....non existent? It was weird. Obviously there was some stuff and what we saw was good and all but this was at the end of the 80's, the practical effect craft had basically been PERFECTED! And yet I cant recall a single fun one from this movie and I only just watched it yesterday. Kinda weird
Overall it was fine. A quick easy watch. Cant hold much against it

Time for everyones favorite subgenre, FOOOOOOOUND FOOTAGE!
As far as found footage movies go, wasnt half bad! Religious horror is kinda creepy to me because guess what, religion is creepy! But overall there were VERYYY few scares. I dont just mean effective scares, I mean scares period. There were almost NONE. That was weird
What it lacks in scares it kinda made up for with its two leads. Those guys were good. Good actors and good characters. I thought Gray was gonna be super annoying at first, and he was, but he got better as it went on. Felt bad for them both by the end. Did NOT feel bad for the Vatican guy! I think those two really kinda salvaged what couldve been an even more forgettable found footage movie
I saw a lot of people praising the end, I thought it left a lot to be desired. First, I dont like how we didnt see what happened to Mark and the new priest guy at all. I mean I guess Mark was supposed to be dead when the room went crazy? I couldnt tell. I think they couldve done way more at the end there and in the underground tunnel
But the END END is what people seem to talk about a lot. And yeah it was a fairly horrifying way for them to go. Stuck in a tunnel AND all that..acid shit leaking on them, whatever it was. But overall it just felt empty, I was like oh..its over huh. And thats a shame since the two leads were p good. OH WELL!
Also I watched this at ten this morning so it wouldve been more effective if I watched it at night surely. Oops
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Misc. - Found Footage: We've got Hell House LLC vs As Above So Below vs. The Borderlands. Giving it to this one! All three of these were okay and each one did something half right. I'm putting Borderlands first and Hell House last. Which is the exact opposite order I would rank them if it was by spookiness!

This was kinda frustrating. This movie had NOOOOOO IDEAAAAAAAAAA what it wanted to be. It was all over the place
First I was like oh okay shes gonna do dirty torture jobs for this seedy strip joint place. Then I was like op nope shes getting some weird customers based off of that job and thats what the movie will be. THEN the big turning point happens with the gross party scene and Im like okay here we go, its a revenge movie. Shell get the guy who gave her the drink, the doctor who invited her, then the professor doctor and their torture scenes will get more and more fucked up, I can live with that. BUT NO! Because THEN she tortures the main one right away and then the movie turns into her embracing the body modification life and opening her own thing! Its a MESS!
The middle bit takes so many jumps so quickly. Theres the party scene, then she gets revenge the very next day and only TWO scenes later! Then the NEXT scene she opened up her...practice. Its all over the place and the editing is pretty bad
Which is a shame because there was some potential here for sure. Any one of those couldve branched off into their own half decent movie but instead we got a little bit of everything, it was weird. And that ENDING. God that was bad, the random husband of a random patient who I had already forgotten about just shows up and stabs her and now shes dead, end of movie. Oh no! Stupid
The good: Katharine Isabelle. She fit the role well. Shes pretty good
I feel like I just talked myself into a 4 but I'll stick with 5. A low 5
Oh and the absolute best part of the movie is when her grandma dies and the movie relays it to us by showing Mary deleting her grandma as a contact from her phone. I lold
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas
Gore & Disturbing - Torture: We've got The Strangers vs. The Perfection vs. American Mary. Three..whatever movies, but I found The Strangers to be the most effective of the three at what it was trying to do. The Perfection was a mess just like Mary but I can appreciate how off the wall it was willing to get. And the shot of Steven Weber at the end was far more disturbing than anything in American Mary tbh, I thought this was gonna be far more disturbing than it was. Mary gets third place. These scores keep on FLIPPING!

Five down, that means its RAAAAAAAAAANK TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME!
|
1. Night of the Living Dead
2. The Borderlands
3. Phase IV
4. The Burning
5. American Mary
An average start like last year. Two 6/10s and the rest are 5s. They were actually pretty hard to rank. I find 5 and 6 movies impossible to rank because theyre always such a mixed bag, sometimes the 5s have only like ONE single element going for them and thats basically what Im ranking against each other. Its a crapshoot really, ask me a different day and Im sure theyll shuffle. Living Dead holds the early top spot and American Mary is currently sitting in last. I am very sure movies will come along soon to steal those best and worst titles |
